Just test rode and cruise shut off again while TCS was disabled. TCS remained off (did not reset) and the amber cruise light never flashed.

Then I don't think it is any of the wheel sensor. like many other, my best guess now is one of the switches, clutch or brake.
This is a really strange problem, and I feel sorry for you... :'(

I am a technician working on plastic injection moulding machines, and I hate this kind of problems.
But in the same time it is kind of interesting. But NOT when the problem is on a mans bike
Best of luck, and I will follow this thread to learn, and maybe suddenly a new idea :lamp:

Just a random thought, a bit left of field really, but we have had a spate of side stand switch problems over on a BMW forum I use (F650GS run about).

So, does the engine stumble, miss a beat or several, as the CC closes itself down I wonder, or is it a seamless shutdown. Does it occur on a bumpy road section or in bends. With the baby BMWs, we have been seeing some riders with weakened sidetand springs, allowing the stand to flap around, which seems pretty straightforward to analyse. Others where the internals of the SS cut-off switch have corroded, so the system just does it's own thing - sometimes cuts the ignition completely, but often just a momentary stumble that seems more like a coil stick problem which has everyone looking in the wrong place.

Not sure if this really helps, I am a bit short of ideas at this stage. I must try & brief flip of the SS when on cruise next time I take the S10 out & see what happens.

Good luck sorting this ........................ KEN

Thanks for continuing to try and help me in this (everyone).

Regarding the side stand... I'm confident it is not a factor. There are no engine stalls (or anything of the like) when cruise shuts off. It doesn't matter if I'm on a very smooth road or a bumpy road. Cruise will hold just fine on either at times and then shut off on either.

I've tested for this by trying to extend the side stand while cruising, and I have to basically extend it all the way down before it trips the motor. So even a weak spring should not allow it.

Two thoughts as I review the ideas in this thread:

I'm buying new from now on, because I can afford it.

No more dealing with 10+ year old wiring harness as these advanced systems cycles age out. Welcome to the new world of disposable cycles, and...

The SideStand (SS) thing. I routinely find my boot heel pressing down on the SS while riding standing up. I cannot seem to avoid the SS with my boot heel while standing. I'm not saying it's an issue here, I just find it "awkward" and curious that the SS lever (to press it down) is where it is.

I'm afraid I don't have anything to contribute to this thread technically wise but I am here to offer my support! I am checking this thread every day hoping that you find a solution, I know myself I absolutely love cruise control and if anything caused it to have problems like this I would be devastated! I have my fingers and toes crossed for you to find a solution soon. ::26::

Thanks everyone for the support! Dealer has asked me to do another test ride with the diagnostic tool hooked up. Going to do this tomorrow at 4pm.

Truthfully, I haven't don't anything other than routine maintenance to the bike since 2015. It has been outfitted to my liking since then.

I've added stickers to the Jesse panniers as I've toured with it. Added more when I got engaged on it, and added more when my wife and I took our honeymoon on it. Does that count?!

PS: That's why I care so much about fixing 'this/my' bike. It is very sentimental and my wife basically told me I can never sell it. Any new bike in the future would have to be an additional haha. A replacement anything, or another Tenere, just would not be the same.

Btw, I added a Baja Designs OnX LED lightbar in the fall of 2015. I've already completely disconnected and removed it and tested...to no resolution.

Here are some pictures of my bike. Now there is a face to the name. Best bike I've ever had.

Forest pic is from 2 months ago near Deals Gap where my wife and I met (on a Vstrom I was touring from Texas on in 2005 haha). Desert pic is looking at the Chisos Mountains in Big Bend just shortly before.

Re: My bizarre & seemingly unsolvable cruise control issues...hoping for new ideas.

Just finished the 2nd test ride with the diagnostic tool installed. Wow, that was the worst the cruise control has ever performed.

I was only out for about 15 minutes and I only got cruise to set about 10 times. It took me pushing the 'set' button between 15-20 times before it would set on most attempts. Max before for this issue had never exceeded 3 attempts. When it did set, it would quickly shut off again. Longest it held was about 1-2 minutes. At one point I think I pushed the 'set' button closer to 30 times.

All the while, no error codes, no flashing lights, no odd behavioral issues from the bike, and on smooth roads.

I fiddled with the set/resume switch in all ways imaginable to try and uncover any issues with the toggle buttons. This never created any verifiable issues. Even while it was set and holding I tried making it fail by fiddling with the set/resume toggle and it never caused a failure (with intent). However after I stopped messing with it, cruise would fail shortly after.

Dealer confirmed data was logged and they are now submitting to the factory. Hoping for some kind of news soon.

In the meantime, have you tried the idea of disconnecting the rear brake light switch spring, behind the RH heel plate?

Just to recap, it seems like the system will switch on OK, remain stable without the cruise light flashing & show no error codes. However it will either not set, or drop out pretty quickly if it does take the command. Does the set light ever flash, or simply go out I wonder?

Surely this just has to be one of the micro switches that trip the system - front brake, rear brake, clutch, throttle - almost anything else will throw a code &/or cause the cruise indicator light to flash. Deactivating conditions are detailed in the Owners Manual & the only vague area is 'the CC system is not able to maintain the set cruising speed', presumably meaning trying to run the bike up hill in high gear, but this is covered in the TIP section.

It can't be the gear indicator, as this is not linked to the gearbox in the way we see with say BMWs (which can cause the ECU to shut down the engine when they go rogue), just a comparison between revs & speed, hence it doesn't show when the clutch is pulled. However, I don't know whether a failing neutral light switch could plague the CC system in any way, by telling the CC that you are in neutral when you are not. The left hand switch gear checks out OK I believe, along with the ABS system & the kill switch.

Sorry to drone on, but I think I can speak for us all when I say this one really is a mystery, a mystery that we would dearly like to see solved.

At least you have Yamaha on the case now. Good luck ........................... KEN

Ken, thanks for the reminder on disconnecting the rear brake switch. Did that just a moment ago and went for a ride. No change in symptoms unfortunately, but at least one more thing is ruled out.

Just a couple of further thoughts. Quite some time back, one forum member switched to aftermarket stubby hand levers & struck CC set problems however he adjusted the micro switches, so had to revert to OEM. I can't see from the pics what levers you have on the bike?

Secondly, the issue of electronic interference, say between the brake lights & indicators if the rear light unit has a poor earth/neg connection. This was mentioned way back on this thread, but UV related. Rather than trouble shoot with a meter, it's probably easier to run a fresh neg wire from the main frame, or even the battery, under the seats to the rear light unit neg as a simple check. With the advent of LEDs in the rear, we don't seem to see this issue much these days, but I often follow other vehicles displaying the symptoms.

Keep trying ..................... KEN

Regarding levers, I'm still running the OE levers and they've never been changed.

I will look into the grounding tomorrow because that's a good idea. My riding buddies have never mentioned any odd behavior from my rear brake light but it could be an issue I suppose nonetheless.

Those of you with cruise, what happens when you pull in the clutch lever only, no brake lever, no shifter movement. Just thinkin'.

The cruise cancels the minute the clutch lever begins to move. I often use it as a deliberate way to cancel when I don't want to flash my brake light.

So, that makes two switches that will disable the cruise. The infamous Clutch Jumper Mod is a no-no. In the automotive world I've seen more than a few brake light switch failures take cruise off-line. Most brake switches use a dual circuit, part dedicated to cruise, part for the lights. I have seen an improperly adjusted brake light switch on a car take out cruise and leave the brake lights working. I'd want to sit down with a DVOM and check the circuits.
