Since MCN accepts no paid advertising, I would guess more like a personal bias. Or they just ignore the recall.

I agree. I don't think reliability is ever taken into account to a large extent. It's just what they think is the favorite on the week / day. Most of these bikes don't do huge mileage anyway. They are usually just taken out on nice days for a couple of hundred miles and then stashed. That's just going off some survey I read about the average yearly mileage of bikes in the US of A.

But which MCN are we talking about?

Based on what I see traveling through Europe, if it was a BMW product that was the best tourer I would say it would be the GS not the RT. I lusted after a RT for the longest time and when I was ready to but test rode the latest version of the RT.........hated it! Took it back to the dealer and test rode a GT, bought it!
I see more ADV bikes than tourers doing touring here in Europe. I think they are much more versatile in terms of highway riding and twisties and moreover ergos....

Well they don't sell advertising, but they do accept free use of new bikes from the manufacturer. Do you think they would get
Another test bike if they gave a bad review?

It is one thing to give a bad review and quite another to give the bike tourer of the year.

And, yes, I do think they'd get another bike if they gave it a bad review. The RT wouldn't have been my choice, especially not in light of the shock-ing recall. But the fact the MCN guys liked it best doesn't mean they're evil or corrupt or on the take. They just like the RT best.
I disagree with lots of magazine articles; surely not all those writers are taking bribes. (Who would actually get the bribe? the writer? the magazine owner? the editor? all of the above?)

Big Blue,

Believe it or not a lot of us are motorcycle guys. A bunch of ole coots amongst us. Have you been to one of our Rallies? :)

And while I admit the BMW's are gonna get critiqued from a Tenere slant here, for the most part, the "ole coots" here, HAVE ridden, and even owned, BMW's.
And many have friends and riding buddies with them.

I've always stated my yearning for THE definitive Big ADV bike. (GSA) But I have just never pulled the trigger. Got close a couple of times, but just close.

Anyways, it wouldn't matter what bike got chosen in this article. There will always be some things to agree with, and things to disagree with. And if every single one of us went and rode the BMW tomorrow, do you think that would result in everyone suddenly agreeing with mcn?

I know me well enough. I'd probably love it! But I've rarely gotten off of any bike and didn't like it.

Big,

Yes I had one. Bought it in early spring and got caught in the shock issue. Long story short it was/is a great bike when it works. BMW bought mine back as it was unrideable ALL summer. I was VERY pissed and BMWNA sucked during the process.

Now here's the kicker...... it cost double what I bought my hold-over 12 S10. And the S10 is a surprisingly good package within certain limits.

I could write a book about the 2 but am very satisfied with the S10.

waiting to hear people getting fired up about the comparison in Motorcyclist magazine on the CTX1300, Burgman 650(I believe that was the scoot), BMW R1200RT, and the Super Tenere. What has curb appeal, what doesn't.... fill me in.

When you open the cover of MCN there is always an editorial from the editor Dave Searle. In the photo of him he is perched on a GS. When you see a photo of me I'm on a Tenere. He's not going to switch horses and neither am I.

Hey Donb,

My theory is you take that "dream bike" budget, (The GS IS the one that causes dreams. I'm grateful for that too) and throw it at your Tenere STEAL.
A $25000 Tenere is a World Class BEAST. Certainly not the bike in the comparisons.

Only seems logical if you're a fella that was willing to go full boat on the GS(A)

Having read this thread, I wonder if there's some confusion between MCN (Motorcycle News) and MCN (Motorcycle Consumer News) ???
