Hi guys,

went out today bike ran for over a hour about 70 miles, i felt unwell diabetic type 1, so i pulled into a lay bye on the A49 uk, and sat on the bike while it was still running parked in laybye for about 13 minutes while i was eating jelly beans lol,
anyway i could see from my feet a large pile od steam smoke looked down and it was pouting out of the coolant over flow pipe left a very large pool on the floor, i panicked drove off the red high temp light was on but went out quickly, i still had a 2 hour drive home which it did no issues
any ideas what may of happened

Do a pressure check on the coolant system and/or a leakdown test on the cylinders and you'll find out real quick or eliminate some possibilities.

I believe first response is worried about a head gasket leak among other things. Bimota has a good question. Did the fan turn on? I have found out that this bike's fan comes on early and often. Third possibility is that your thermostat is not opening up like it should. Maybe only partially so going down the road it is good enough but idling with fan on it isn't flowing well enough. Find out if fans coming on, next thermostat, third pressure test. Any shop should have a pressure tester. Hooks up to your radiator where the cap goes. Then they hand pump up the pressure to about 3 to 5 pounds over your stated cap pressure and let it sit for 30 minutes to an hour to see if fluid leaks out somewhere via fluid dripping. If pressure goes down and no fluid they should pull the plugs and see if it is going to the cylinders. You should check your oil to see if water is mixing into it. It will be milky looking and if it has progressed it will look like a runny peanut butter. Be sure to pressure test the radiator cap too. Most likely fan or thermostat.
Good luck!

Bad radiator cap. Start with the easy things first. If it's blowing coolant through the overflow, the radiator cap isn't holding pressure. Seen this many times with KTM dirt bikes - i carry four, 1.4Bar radiator caps with me 'cause they fail that frequently.

i have had it running, on the drive after topping up coolant, its running but been a while fan not coming on fuse checked thats ok, but while running the red high temp warning light is on while on the drive turned it off as the high temp light is on gen 1

so at the moment running on the drive for 10 minuites plus the coolant is not spitting out the over flow is full but the fan should of kicked in by now and not and turned it off as red temp light has come on, i think if rided that,ll go out

Does the fan have a relay? I would think so. Confirm the fuse is actually not blown. I think there was an article on here somewhere about bad fuses.

Try jumping 12V to the fan directly. If it runs then your problem is elsewhere. Relay (assuming there is one), temperature switch / sensor (kinda doubt it’s this if you’re seeing the temperature values on the dash), damaged wire/harness or bad connection in the plug.

Also, you checked the fuse (visually?) but the only correct way to do it is with a continuity meter/tester. I had a fuse once that somehow cracked. It was bad but looked perfect to the eye.

can,t see how the fan has failed bike not dropped it spins freely, i,ll lift the tank to check the plug, but this fan not working i,m assuming is seperate to the coolant lose out of the expansion pipe on the road when parked up, would a fan not working cause the coolant lose

This should be a straight forward diagnostic.
Being the fan is not coming and the fuse appear ok you can do a quick check by connecting the fan direct.
If it comes on a quick wiring check can be done with a meter. Check while running and no voltage should be at connector till temp reaches about 104deg on your dash.
Keep in mind that thermostats and temp senders will not work without coolant in the system. So make sure cooling system is full.
So this can lead to this, if the cooling system has a leak and coolant gets low the thermostat and sender can stop working/reading thus leading to no fan operation and overheating.

once home tho, i,ve filled the rad to the top and the expansion bowl is just below the high level, and fired it up 10 minutes in fan does not come on, and at 10 miuntes the red high temp warning light comes on so i turn it off, but normally the fan kicks in before this 10 miuntes

Being the red warning light comes on then the sensor is reading and sending info to the ecu.
I’m not sure if there are 2 sensors on this motor, some use 2. One for dummy light and one for ecu.
Easy to know if you have a service book.
I’m not near mine at the moment.
Check the fan for operation, it sounds like it done or connection wiring issue.

i,ll check the fan in the morning,, i,ll lift the tank see what the connection block is like clean that up i,,l connect the fan to a spare barry i have,
but there is a fan nt coming on issue, the red temp warning light comes on once sat on the drive for 10 minutes, because the light comes on i,m not leaving it any longer, so i don,t know if i did would it boil over and spit it out of the expansion again.
i take it that it didn,t spit it out just because the fan isn,t working or would it, or do i have a fan and thermostate issue
