8 INCHES ON HEAVY WET SNOW GAVE ME SOMETHING TO DO. I believe I miss seeing grandchildren more than riding the bike. I have been staying put like a good boy. At first I thought that I would take the risk (69 but no known health factors) but now I clearly see I could also be putting them at risk. That ain't happening.

In the beginning I was thinking this Corona Virus thing was way over blown. . . .
I too didn't think much of it at first. There's been several viruses in China. . . .that stayed in China. I thought/hoped this one would too. Obviously it did not.

It's serious and it's here. I had to spend 6 days in the hospital recently for an emergency appendectomy. I had to wait in a standing room only ER for 4 hours to be seen. Once in the exam room my appendix burst. I spent 3/13 - 3/18 in the hospital waiting for the infection to subside and get my white blood cell count down. In talking with many nurses and doctors they all said the same things about not being prepared for the coronavirus, no test kits, lack of proper N95 face masks, not enough IC beds, not enough respirators etc.. Everyday I was there, you could just see and feel the stress levels increase. And this was at a Regional Medical Center. So, take this very seriously. Good luck to everyone.

We have read in England tje U.S. was one of the last countries to order test kits. And tjen they ordered the wrong type apparently. I dont think that's going to help things. Too much denial going at the highest levels. Some of that here aswell. Best wishes to all in the U.S.

This is a very serious situation on so many levels.

People/countries that doesn't take it serious will learn the hard way.

But it will pass and ordinary life will resume!

Until then -

Positive news relayed from my super geek microbiologist daughter. (NOT an MD)

Note the rate of increase in the US and Spain in the video above. (She definitely is a super geek) On the prevention side and reason for sharing, note the discussion about taking Zinc pills (skip to 4:40), something I've done at her suggestion in cold/flu seasons for years in addition to taking L-Lysine and vitamin C. Chloroquine per the video above would be better but needs a prescription, while zinc and L-Lysine are cheap and in any drug store and most grocery stores. Drug companies won't like this because it's super inexpensive.

So far, I'm doing as much isolation as I can without halting life, so the efficacy of this is like the joke about how to know you don't have elephants in your fridge by checking for footprints in the butter. I simply can only say I do go to stores when needed, work on the boat in the marina, and haven't caught anything yet. But I have no pre-existing conditions (important!), have found in previous years that I get less colds and flus using L-Lysine and zinc while commuting when packed in with all the sick DC Metro riders, and anything potentially preventive sounds good to me.

She also sent the link below which is being looked at as a treatment for those with CV19 to reduce the mortality rate and length of the pneumonia and other issues which cause the lung damage and actually kill the victims. It’s a positive development and looks promising.
https://techcrunch.com/2020/03/19/french-study-finds-anti-malarial-and-antibiotic-combo-could-reduce-covid-19-duration/

The shortcoming is that what is in this video is only effective once patients have the disease, they are still transmissible pre-symptomatic, and still need the time for the CV19 virus itself to run its’ course. Plus making the amount needed for a global pandemic level illness. Another downside is that for us older folks and especially those with heart issues, hydroxychloroquine and zithromax are known to extend the QT interval (in the ECG) and combining them can cause life-threatening arrhythmias.

This is info only, pick your poison carefully, and absolutely check with your doc before any action.

On a related note about NSAIDS toxicity (aspirin and IB):

I was told by my favorite liquor store owner that the breweries are shutting down and beer is being rationed in London, KY. Lives ruined.

I'm not understanding people, (in general) we've been told to stay inside/apart. Last night I saw more car traffic in general, and on roads that I never see a car at that time of night. We have a chance to stop this bug in it's tracks, and yet we're carrying on as if nothing is wrong. I've also seen videos of people that believe that the pandemic is a hoax. W...T...F...? And, then there's the "panickers". The ones that are hoarding. We need to have a happy medium....take precautions, but don't make matters worse. The news is showing all kinds of people out of work because their businesses have been shut down. Amazon, Coca-Cola, and every grocery store is begging to hire people. Amazon: $15 US, and work from home. Coca-Cola: $19 US, and no experience necessary. Most of the grocery stores are offering $15 US just to put stuff back on the shelves.
I hear you Robert!! I have tried to do as much online shopping as possible. Right now home deliveries of fresh food are almost three weeks out. I'm on the computer everyday trying to get just enough supplies to sustain us for 1 month. Some of these idiots are buying a years supply of goods. One dude had a shopping cart filled to the brim with cases of spam.

I'm washing my hands like a madman at every opportunity. Wipes are not the best but I'm using those at all the touch screens. I'm going back to how I was when I worked in a plating factory as a teen. Those days working with chemicals you were always keeping your hands away from any of your body parts until you scrubbed with soap and hot water.

I thought long and hard about not doing the smog test. My thought process of getting the car smogged is to do it now before things get real bad. Every time I go shopping it is way more of a risk than just being around just one person that's doing a car repair/smog test. And here in CA not having a car registered is a crime that snowballs into jail time. No registration = insurance automatically cancelled = car being impounded and jail if caught driving. Keep in mind I'm an American citizen so all the laws apply to me.

I'm not saying that there's not 126 new cases, but that link is kinda hard to read. And, it didn't mention China per se. So, I don't know which news/info to put my faith in.

the good news is the virus doesn't float around on the wind , now if an infected person sneezes and you breath in the droplets well your probably infected . if your not around an infected person or were they have been and if your washing your hands , your probably not going to catch it. I'm going to say it again , the math is the math and odds are with some care no one on this forum will get it. yesterday reports that still world wide less Than 300k cases and again out of 7 billion folks..... Costco announced that they will not give refunds on toilet paper ,paper towels and a whole list of other items the panicked hoarders purchased ( say a person bought 500.00 dollars of TP and the shortage or crisis goes away ,well your just stuck with greedy purchase )... in Texas the restaurants are open , you have to pick up and eat it somewhere else , I'm thinking bbq for lunch ( so if a server has it and they handle your food , well , its not a perfect system for sure ) trying to be the calm person in a crowd of crazies . do have a motorcycle ride planned for Sunday if the rain stops , picnic lunch on the ride somewhere scenic.

Newer reports are not as clear cut as you would like to believe. No, I don't think it's floating around in the wind, but it is believed to be airborne for short distances. This difference is subtle, but means that it probably does not require a cough or sneeze as was originally believed. If you're in close proximity to someone that is contagious, you have an all too high chance of becoming infected. The problem arises in the math. Madhatter - you're not doing the math. The confirmed cases are only the ones that are sick enough to report or seek medical attention. It takes several days before symptoms exist and people are contagious during some that period. So 300k, (it went up 15k overnight and nearly 50k yesterday), means over a million infected. So you're betting on a poor set of odds now. And that is quickly getting worse. Every area of the US is seeing increases and that is going to continue to increase for a while since we suck at doing what we are told and like to congregate. A week ago there were 6 cases in MS. Last night there were 80 cases. 30 new Friday morning. Today there are more. The New Orleans area has over 400 cases. Every major city has significant numbers of cases. It's not getting better and it won't be getting better for a while.

When you look at the data from China, known cases continued to increase for a week or more after they locked everything down. Those people were already infected when the lock down occurred. But the data shows that actual new contaminations started dropping quickly.

In the US we went from a few cases on the coasts to every state now having cases in a very short time. Because it's so easy to travel within the US, the contagion also traveled easily. I live in a small city with only a regional airport. But people fly in and out every day. And people drive to Memphis to the international airport 90 miles away. On any given day there are still plenty of people making interstate travel. I had people in my driveway the other day from NC and IA. We didn't get close and stayed outside. Point being that we don't usually know where the people we encounter in our daily lives have been.

Most people won't get very sick and will be over it in a couple of weeks. But there is a higher number of people in the 20-40 range getting very ill from this than was seen in China. The US has a different demographic and only time will tell how that shakes out in terms of deaths and severe cases. It's pretty easy to overwhelm a hospital with it's very limited number of beds and resources.

It starts to come down to the simple terms of would you risk infecting someone that has a greater chance of serious illness or death just because you don't think YOU will be very sick? This is not the flu. It's not chickenpox. You won't be immune if you catch it once and get over it. China is seeing a second wave of infections, though no where near what happened the first time.

No one likes this. No one is happy to not be able to go to work or earn a living because businesses close or people cancel functions that provided jobs. Restaurants all over are closing except for drive thru or delivery. Places like Walmart/Sams and other retailers are hiring thousands of people for increased distribution needs. If I didn't have a wife in a high risk category, I would likely be taking a job doing delivery work. There is a need.

The best way to shut this down is to eliminate person to person transmission. You're right, it's not floating around in the wind. But it is being spread by close proximity to other people. Until we limit that better, it will continue to spread.
