Hi Roger J,
Glad to hear your thinking you're on the right side of loud pipe issue but unless the pipe has an EPA stamp or the manufacturer can supply certification that it passes sound test SAE J2825 you're still part of the problem.

Norm
Norm......don't know if such a stamp is required in your jurisdiction. All I know is that Akropovic and Leo Vince both have EC approval. Noise is a real problem for everyone (except on the racetrack). Personally I avoid riding near loud bikes or on one for the noise fatigue factor. Just my 2 cents. :)

Hi,
Me again. What is happening in the North East is that the general public is no longer willing to wait for the Feds to do something about the loud pipe issue and are passing their own local ordinances. Cities like Boston, Ma. and Hampton, NH have passed their own local laws that now allow the police to pull over ANY motorcyle to check that their exhaust systems have an EPA stamp. This can be difficult because some bikes such as the GL1800 I believe require removal of the exhaust to find that stamp. The SAE J2825 sound test is one that the AMA is trying to get the Fed.'s and Local governments to wrap their arms around and support. It's a simple test that can be performed in the field (on the road) and is repeatable.

Norm

I am in serious agreement with you on the noise issue, Norm. I hate loud bikes. I know California as well, has taken action similar to what you are referring to. It is unfortunate that such actions are apparently necessary, but they likely are. There are those in every group of whatever, that behave badly with no respect or consideration for others. Unfortunately, this frequently ends up with the government stepping in and generally engaging in "overkill". I certainly don't blame folks for not wanting to hear these extremely loud bikes. I don't like them, either. Keep in mind that the rider has a great deal to do with the volume produced and the problems caused. A heavy throttle can produce a most annoying noise on even the most seriously restricted or controlled muffler. Gunning your bike at 6:00 am down a quiet residential neighborhood is sheer stupidity and ignorant behavior. It's a shame that the ones causing most of the problems generally can't be isolated and dealt with. Blanket "fixes" have to be applied, which apply to everyone, even the most courteous of drivers.

If you're out on the highway, give 'er. Make as much noise as you want. And remember, the guy behind you is the one taking the hit. It's not nearly as loud in the driver's seat.

Sorry, just felt the need. Let;s be careful out there, and drive courteously. R ::021::

Hi Rem,
Thanks for your support. I do apologize for jumping in on this thread and standing up on my soap box but the issue has been created by us the motorcylist and as such we the motorcylist have to fix the problem. I contacted the seller on the Akropovic and asked if they could clarifiy their statement of “street legal”. They could not and refered me to Akropovic who supply an invalid e-mail address on their site. The Distributor was quick to provide an e-mail for the US importer which at this point I’m still waiting on their response as to whether there is an EPA stamp on the exhaust or that they can certifiy it meets the standards of SAE J2825. I also admit I have a hard on with most of the m/c mags. I have called them on their adds and most of their long term road test in which one of the first things they do is rip off the stock exhaust and then offer the cavet “competition use only” or “it’s not that loud”. They have not even responded to my e-mails let alone print any of them in their mags. I can understand this since it would hit them in their wallet. But there are major strides being made. I don’t know if you have noticed but some of those adds now clearly state that their aftermarket exhaust have an EPA stamp. So I guess what I’m asking before you make that change ask your self twice, even three times how my decision is going to impact the rest of the motorcyle public. If you think what is happening in the North East or Calif. is just an isolated case, beware it is coming to a neighborhood near you.

Norm

Hi,
Ok, it’s obvious I’m not getting through so let us be a little blunter. People need to get over the adolescent mentality of sticking a baseball card and a clothes pin in the spokes of their bicycle and get their heads out of their rump and take a look at what’s going on around them. To think that what you do has no impact on anyone else is absurd. Envision this, you’re out on a nice ride on a perfect day in a group of 3, 4 or 5 motorcycles, one of them has an obvious loud exhaust. You happen to pass through a town or city that has imposed its own noise ordinance and you get pulled over as a group. The officer as a matter of course is going to check everyone of the motorcycles for an EPA stamp on their exhaust. Guess what he or she will find on your bike if you’ve modified your exhaust. Nada! Even though you could comply with SAE J2825 you’re shit out of luck. Take your ticket and hopefully enjoy the rest of your ride. Even worse he could give you a “fix it” ticket too. Hopefully you’ve saved your stock exhaust.
Later,
Norm

Oh, it's gonna happen here. It is just a matter of the orders coming down from high up. People in the small towns have had it with the noise from motorcycles.
It's just a matter of time. And the LEO's will have to follow.

thank you Japako,
Yes, you can stick your head in the sand but it's just a matter of time before everyone is impacted.

Well, let's all drive nice and be nice and play nice ..... let's try not to offend the neighbors. I mean, Rod on that blue bike is offensive enough. No point in insulting the ears as well as the eyes. ::009:: R

WHAT??? There's a snowmobile a half mile down the road. I can't hear you.

They are VERY loud, but again, when driven sans aggression, they aren't bad at all. I can hear the damn things coming a mile down my road, but I'm kinda sorta used to it by now. They go by quickly. It's sort of a way of life up here, but I also live a long ways out of town. I expect a certain amount of that. They can be driven very quietly if one has a mind to. And they should be in inhabited areas. It comes down to a matter of common courtesy in most cases. Unfortunately, courtesy is becoming more and more uncommon ... in all areas of life. Sorry, I wax philosophical ..... R

I am not a very good preacher, but I do adhere to stock mufflers, and like quiet bikes. I have ridden with loud bikes, and have had several in the past, I have learned my lesson, course it took a mighty long time, as I am old and nearly deaf now.

I ride with some folks from CA, and several years ago, I remember a comment about some prime roads being closed to Motorcycles on the coast due to loud motorcycles. It does matter what each of us do.
