Leo Vince vs. Akrapovic

Over the weekend I did a TBS (at factory levels) with very good results and last night I adjusted the CO setting to +3. While I still need more time to make sure 3 is the right setting for me (high elevation desert climate), I am now thinking about my next step: a slip on.

I had a Leo Vince on my FZ1 years ago and really liked it. Reading other posts on the site I noticed that Akrapovics are very popular, and I am sure it is a great product. The question in my mind is whether it is worth the extra money.

I you bought the Akrapovic, what were the factors that justified the higher cost?

If you bought the Leo Vince, is there any down side that would make you consider a different option if you had to do it again?

I am looking for a slip on that will be lighter and produce better torque and power curves. I am not looking for a loud pipe and would not purchase anything beyond a little deeper than stock. With this in mind, should I add other options to my list?

Thank you in advance for sharing your experiences and helping me choose the right slip on for my needs!

Do you still need a heat shield on this pipe, or is it "built in"? Any problems with heat on the LR turn signal?

nope as long as you dont remove the bendy insert that comes with it for the super ten and if you do it wont damage the turn signal it does however pay havoc with the fender lol

It will damage the fender even with the bendy insert? How about the passenger? Do you need to reinstall the factory shield?

When I bought my Akra there were no Leo Vinces's to be had. I bought it on sale and it was only about $100 more in cost.

I have the Akro and it is more expensive and a bit heavier than the Leo, but it is much quieter. It comes with a certification that it is street legal, very rare for an aftermarket slip on. it has a nice deep tone, just a bit louder than stock. The major effect that I felt is more torque, especially down low. After riding it, I looked at their dyno chart and it confirmed exactly what I felt, a big gain in torque from 2,000 to 4,000 and other gains at higher RPM's. Besides my butt dyno, I confirmed that yesterday with my wheelie dyno. ;D Previously I could do a snap wheelie in first with TCS in Off if I closed the throttle briskly and then snapped it open briskly and it helped if I had a small bump in the road to assist. Yesterday with the Akro I tried just rolling it on briskly in first on level ground and it came right up with a sexy growl. Could easily have gone too far if I hadn't rolled off quickly. On normal acceleration, it revs very quickly through the gears, especially the lower ones and has great roll on power in the higher gears.

I am sure that other slip ons will also improve performance, but with the penalty of a major increase in loudness. The Akro will not disturb the neighbors.

VERY good feedback Fred! I can probably live with a "little" louder pipe if there is a decent gain in performance and loss of weight AND does not create a heat issue for the bike or pillion.

BTW, what's a good price and source for the Akra?

+1 one on all of this.

They sound good while being very quiet.

i cant see where that confusion came from but no it doesn't burn the fender with the insert installed, i dont know about passengers i dont carry them they tend to mess up the balance and handling of the bike too much! as for heat its not an issue ive thought about so im thinking its probably not a problem

i can worry about it for a few days if you like and see? ::025::

Sorry, I misread your previous response about potential damage to the fender.

Bloke, then what did you mean regarding your statement. I have heard the Leo Vince (not on the S10) but on other bikes and generally like the sound. Don't know the difference in prices right now, but I too am starting to look around.

if you dont put the insert in it will melt the fender not the turn signal but also i left out the spacer when i fitted mine as i wanted a more snug fit so the muffler pointed at the fender, as for sound they all sound the same, 550mm long tube with a 55mm perforated tube inside it pretty much no matter who makes it so its hard for them too sound too different!

Bloke, You have evidently never heard an Akro made for the S10. It is not a straight thru tube and does not sound anywhere like a straight thru muffler. it meets all sound regulations and comes with documentation to certify that. This is the first aftermarket slip on that I have ever heard that did not appreciably increase volume.

When I unpacked it, I was surprised at the size of it. After installing and listening to it, I understand that it had to be a bit larger in diameter to accomplish what they did.

For sure.. The Akrapovic is similar to stock sound... pretty quiet.... The rest on the market sound about the same... (grumble, loud, sounds good, Etc) They are ALL better than the stock ! ::008::

i sell them, its a euro legal 98db and there is so little gain in power its really difficult to justify the price, if you want your motor to breath free er you need a free er breathing muffler ::008::

I couldn't agree less.....

See my post with the Akrapovic data right above your post.

Akra quality and craftsmanship is unmatched. It has it's price but is well worth it, if you can afford it.

It's 88 dB exactly the same as the stock one, and it improves the power a lot! It really makes a hughe difference in power, throttle response and revving up.
