Just installed some black Jesse's on my S/10 the grab rails are more than snug. A woman's hands are smaller and my not have so much trouble. I thought about trying to space them some but am going to leave them for now.

Installed my Silver Jesse bags two nights ago. I used the additional 3/"spacers on the left side and built 3/8" spacers for the right side. There is plenty of room for my wife to grab the handrails, even though she does not use them. After adding aftermarket exhaust, I should be able to remove grab rails as stated above.
The wife's legs barely rub the front edge of the bags. I should be able to tilt front edge of bags down to eliminate any rubbing. With the bags in the rear most position she has plenty of room for her feet.

I've always really like the rest-of-the-world blue-and-silver bikes. I like my blue and silver one better! ;D

They ended up 36.5" wide - an inch more than previously advertised. I should be able to take out spacers and reduce that by .5", but that will close up the gaps around the grab rails. It's already tight on the right - ok for small hands and thin gloves. It looks like I should be able to ditch the grab rails and pull things in tighter, but I'm going to enquire with Jesse first before I mess with it. (EDIT: I removed the 3/8" spacers on the left, reducing the gap for hands on the grab rails but also reducing width to 36")

DC, man that looks sharp!!!! I am a blue owner as well. I am planning on the black bags, but I gotta say, your pics sure make me like the silver on there.

One question, from your rear view pic it almost looks like the cut-out in the left bag for the exhaust isn't needed. Maybe just camera angle, but I thought that when looking at another shot from some one. Probably would be too tight, but it almost looks like you could mount a "full" un-cut bag on there. IDK, maybe it would stick out too far then....

Yeah I get the feeling that the cutout is a holdover from the original design, with the grab rails deleted... for the current setup, they could have reduced the size of the cutout. BUT... if you want to ditch the grab rails and pull them in, you might need the extra cutout. So I guess they are leaving the options open by keeping the big cutout. Will find out for sure after talking to Rick about getting rid of grab rails and pulling them in.

36.5" still isn't too bad, given the bars are 38" or over 40" if you take into account the handguards.

Installation update:

I talked to Rick at Xplorermoto about the possibility of pulling the bags in a bit tighter... not that I'm anal about it, I'm just a tad annoyed that I'm an inch wider than the advertised 35.5". I can understand they had to go a bit wider to keep the grab rails, but I think there should at least be the option to ditch them. Wouldn't have thought it would be too hard to design with 2 spacer kits and let the customer decide to keep the grab rails or not.

Rick said they didn't design them that way, but it may be possible pull them in a bit using washers for spacers to find the right position, then make appropriate spacers.

Not wanting to do that right now, I took another look at my installation. There are a couple of 3/8" spacers for the exhaust side, which in the instructions are optional. I used them because the racks seemed to impinge on the exhaust cover too much without them. I went back and pulled them out once I realised the covers have a lot of give in them - I just put some double-sided tape on the part of the cover that was in contact (silly I know, this bike is going to have many scars before too long!).

Now it measures just a tad over 36". Better. I think you could get the other half inch after removing the grab rails, but no more than that since the racks then start hitting the frame.

ONE THING that is not mentioned in the instructions is to re-use the large, thick washer on the front grab rail bolt. Without the 3/8" spacers the bolts are a tad long, and hit the bottom of the blind threaded hole. Could be somewhat disastrous if you attempt to tighten them without that thick washer, stripping a thread in the subframe would not be pleasant!

Agreed. Removing the heat shield and adding an aftermarket exhaust should allow the use of a un-cut bag. I certainly won't be riding any passengers, so tighter-is-better here.
Hopefully this will be an available option when purchasing this system.

To bring back a old thread.....

Did anyone successfully mount the Jesse brackets without the grab rails? If so, what is the overall width and what spacers/etc did you end up having to use to mount the brackets?

Thanks.

Steve - I will be doing it soon. It looks like to get the tightest possible fit, I'll need to remove the luggage attachment loops - which I'm prepared to do (provided there is 1/2" or more to be gained by doing it), I don't use them anyway . Break out the Dremel!

Will post the result.

Trevor,

Thanks for the reply. You are around 36" wide right now correct? How much tighter do you think removing the grab rails will make the bags..2" or so?

Think there will be enough clearance to clear the muffler, with or without the plastic cover?

They were 36" but I added some spacers to make the grab rails useable, so currently 37". I think I'll be able to get them in to around 35". The muffler cover on the left will be a limiting factor. Will have to see what it looks like with it off, and how much heat is generated and tranferred to the pannier. If I need to I'll leave it off an maybe glue some reflective insulation to the pannier closest to the muffler.

Or it may be all too much trouble to get that last half inch. I'm pretty sure I can get to 35.5" without removing the grab rails or the muffler cover - it's just that the grab rails won't be very useful for grabbing at that point.

I mounted mine without the passenger grab rails. I used only spacers that came with the bags but got shorter bolts to get the bags as tight as Possible. Mine ended up at 35.5 inches overall. Due to the way the brackets are, I don't think you could get these any tighter.

Maddog,

Is the exhaust cover on or off (can't tell from the pic)?

Also with the bags mounted, what are you using for a hand-hold to get the bike up on the centerstand?

I use the top loop of Jesse's rack for my grab point for centerstand deployment.

The exhaust cover is still on. The bag does touch the exhaust cover, but I see no issue other than it make the bag a little harder to take off.
For center stand deployment I either use the upper or lower loop of the Jesse bracket to pull on while I step on the center stand. It is a little tougher than using the original grab rails, but not really a big deal.

Since installing the Jessie's I have also been using the bag bracket and actually find it easier to use than the grab handles...which I can't grab now anyway..... ::025::
I'd like to dump the hand rails but it seems (on my bike) the limiting factor on the left is the exhaust guard. Might have to try sawing it down a bit this winter.

I bought four more 3/8" spacers to use in place of the grab handles. The left hand rack still rests on the heat shield anyway, but not real bad. It will leave a mark I'm sure.

Are you saying you removed the grab rails, but needed to use more spacers than already supplied? I have 2 spacers at each mounting point, I was figuring they would be enough for whatever spacing I end up with after removing the rails.
