Is anyone regularly hitting or breaking 200 miles or more per tank?

Just got my Tenere, 1,600 miles and everytime I've filled it up its been over 200 miles except for once, averaging 45.3 mpg USA.

I got ahead of a mate by a couple of vehicles the other day, and then pulled out before a truck with a big tailback, I knew he would be some time getting past it all and had backed off to about 60mph to wait for him, I reset the MPG counter and continued for several miles at a steady 60-65 on a pretty straight and flat road, I was showing 67mpg, I know this is only a steady cruise, but my normal 80ish has it down about 48 mpg.

If only I could have that sort of restraint all the time I would be looking at close to 300 miles to the tank  But if I wanted to go that slow all the time I would buy an NC700 and get 85 mpg on the slow drive to death by boredom.

Hello fellow lovers of the S10-hooray,
I'd love to know just how far a tank would take me. So a few questions please. I have heard it's not great for the fuel pump to be exposed to long, meaning is it cooled by the fuel in the tank and might get hot, so is it OK to run the tank dry-? Also if I carried, and I do sometimes, about 30 ounces of gas - just under a liter - would that be enough to get me to a source of more gas-? It should get me 10 to 15 miles but will the tank be so empty it might not be sucked up .... and that really would suck.

I have gone 220+ miles a couple times and that was all highway before I stopped to fill up and it seemed I had at least a gallon left. I use fuelly.com but don't get as good mileage as many do according to them. I do try to go easy on the throttle, I do try to keep it in T mode and I do try to keep it under 150 mph but I never ever make it for a full tank. Sad I know, but it's so much fun to twist the right hand - I just can't control it for too long. ( I know I have a problem that many share ::26:: )

Thanks for any help,
-dt

Hi,
I cannot believe what poor mpg you guys are getting over there in the US.I regularly cruise at 80-85mph and get between 52-58mpg and if you sit at 75mph it goes over 60mpg up tp 63 AND NEVER below 52 no matter how fast you are going.

Imperial versus US MPG? That could explain the difference.

I don't think s10 has that setting... I would say gasoline quality. Maybe Europeans don't have mandatory ethanol content. In US it's 10%

Its 5% here, but there is a big discussion now its become obvious the Ethanol is just a new way for Oilrefiners to make more money, at the cost of Nature :-(
In Germany they tried to lobby for the 10%, but the public just wont buy it, so they now are stepping out of the Hoax .

Your 52-58 Imperial MPG = 43-48 US MPG, so you're not too far off the mark of what the US riders seem to be getting.

The S10 doesn't have that setting. But the MPG type it shows is region specific ie. US MPG in USA and Imperial elsewhere. A gallon is bigger in the UK, hence why the MPG figures look more impressive but actually aren't!

All this thread proves is that there is a vast diiference in various riders' riding styles and, just because Tom always gets 59 mpg doesn't mean that Dick or Harry will ever get those figures. Often it is the contrast of enjoying a spirited riding style against long journies on major highways. I have seen similar threads on other forums for bikes I have owned. I have always found some figures so high or low they are hard to believe and have thought to myself "how carefully/crazily does this guy ride to get those figures?" Same goes for tyre mileages or brake wear. Just further proof we are all different and that is how it should be.

Just picked it up so going through the Break In Period.
Currently getting around 42 mpg but... It's kept under 75 and 3900 revs.

(Gosh I hope the next 300 miles go as fast!!)

So true. Even just amongst myself, I hit blinking-E around 130mi of local commuting, beyond 180mi on a mellow cruise through Yosemite, and beyond 200mi going 60mph with a tailwind. And through irresponsible use of the throttle, I end up getting 4000mi on a tire that should get 7000mi.

I just finished an 8,600 miles wander through all of the Western states and vancouver Island. My mileage varied from 32 mpg to a high of 57 mpg. The low numbers were observed while riding at 75 to 80 mph into a strong headwind. The high mileage was while riding below 70 mph at altitudes up to over 11,000 feet. My bike was loaded with about 90 pounds of gear, including camping gear and about 20 pounds of camera equipment. I suspect the Touratech side cases, the Givi top case and the Yamaha touring screen may have added a little win resistance while bucking the headwinds.

Ran 'er dry today.

I was coming down the freeway at 1am when it started to cut out. At first, I could rev a little, and kept it going for about 2 miles. But then the engine cut and wouldn't restart. The amazing thing: I continued coasting about 1/2 mile, off an exit ramp, and into a fortuitously-located ARCO. Daaayam!!

Range on tank: 185mi (mixture of commutes and long distance)
F indicator: 41mi (shortest I've ever experienced)
Fill quantity: 5.55USGal

Wow, only 185 miles? With spirited riding my fuel light may come on around that milage.

On a similar note, is there an approximation for the range of each bar on the fuel gauge. I find my last bar starts blinking very early before fuel is needed.

Now that I've put 10k miles on my S10. I routinely hit 200 miles with each tank. The low fuel light usually comes on between 180 and 200 miles. Depending on my riding. I have exceeded 200 miles per tank without hitting reserve a few times.
