The average smartphone just isn't made to work in the conditions it sees on a motorcycle. However, all the technology is there to make a device that will. Somebody just needs to package it all up and figure out an economical way to get an internet connection to it (either 3g built-in or wi-fi with your normal smartphone as a hotspot in your pocket).
Agree completely.

And I'm still waiting for the UPS truck to show up with my new ASUS Prime - and then I wlll gladly pass this iPad on to my wife.....

Okay, not sure what has changed, but the problem has gone away..

I JUST got back from Best Buy (got the wife a Kindle Fire) and was playing with the Asus Transformer there. NICE tablet! It's Android so it "just worked" for me. :D I wish my work would have gone Android instead of iPad, but it's Sales and Marketing, so glitz matters way more than it should...

Was it the original or the new "Prime"?

Oh yes, let me know how she likes the kindle fire. I looked at one the other day in person at SAMs.

I just noticed that YouTube videos embedded into posts don't seem to work on the iPad. Another bummer or just my iPad?
Probably because the iPad doesn't do flash.

Sweet, the Prime is supposed to be great.

I like the keyboard also as it has 2 usb ports and and SD card slot to go along with the micro SD card on the main unit.

After much work (I thought Apple's stuff was supposed to be easy?) I upgraded my iPad to 5.0.1. I'm still not seeing the issue you're talking about, Rod.

Oh, and there is no doubt about it, the embedded YouTube vids don't work, they don't even give me an option to click on them. I find this odd, since going into the main "Media" section WILL let me click on the videos for play. I would have thought the same embed code would be used in both places, but apparently not.

I keep giving this iPad a chance over and over and just keep coming up with gripes. My newest gripe is the software update process. I only have experience with Android on my phone, but it will automatically download and inform me when a new version of Android is available for install, and then I just click one button and it takes care of the rest. I've never lost any data on an Android update on the phone. The iPad on the other hand waited until I connected to iTunes, then told me an update was available, then told me I'd lose everything on the iPad if I didn't sync. So I synced and nothing came over...? So I said to update, it downloaded the file, then binged and bonged at me a dozen times, waited some more, then restarted and I found all my apps were gone. Luckily they were all free and I had not downloaded many, so no big deal. Seriously, this is the Apple experience? I hate to sound like a hater but my Mother SURE as heck wouldn't survive with this thing.

How's that Asus treating you, Rod?

Your experience doing the update to 5.0.1 sounds about like mine. Only difference is that my son had warned me of some of the pitfalls and I had backed up my apps to a thumb drive and was able to retrieve them. The only real plus I noted on Safari after the update is having tabs for opening new sessions.

As for the android tablet. I find there is much more lag when typng compared to the ipad. Apparently this is a common complaint and hopefully will be improved with the release of ICS next month.

Battery life on the Asus is on par or maybe slightly better than the ipad, but charge time is much improved. Not as many apps in the android market, but that is getting better all the time.

Let me tell you (again), I'm NOT in love with the iPad.......

:(
Screen shots are easy...push and hold the home button while pressing and releasing the power button. It grabs whatever screen the iPad is on, and saves it in the photo folder.

The jump from iOS4 to iOS5 was significant enough that there were some changes. The biggest thing in updating the software is having a backup to restore from once the update was complete (iOS5 can now back up to iCloud, so this should be more transparent). Also, you never actually lose your Apps from Apple; they are all available to download again from either the iTunes or App Store apps.

You still need to load iOS5 via iTunes. After that, it can be updated wirelessly.

The Flash problem has been around for a long time but gradually going away - it is the result of a technology turf battle between Apple and Adobe. Apple has declared they believe an "open solution" is the right one with HTML5 and won't run Flash on the iPad because they believe it is not the correct video solution for tablets going forward. I think the reason the main YouTube site will run video on the iPad is because YouTube is now running HTML5 video on their own web site, but that doesn't mean it is running on other web sites yet.

With iOS 5 I think you can now update the OS over wifi and not have to do the iTunes thing. Which is good because iTunes does suck.

That's a major step forward and one that was needed.

There are hundreds of iPad applications to let you get at the file system, move photos, and upload files to a web server. Almost everything like this is doable, sometimes not terribly easy, but doable.
