I always immediately "tune out" anyone who complains about 100+ horsepower motorcycles being "underpowered. " I well remember when the "hot" bikes were in the 60 horsepower range and my new '72 H2 2 stroke (74 horses) was advertised as "The fastest accelerating production motorcycle in the world". Guess I'm just getting old, but I've never been bored while riding and I've ridden a LOT of motorcycles with less than 60 horsepower. I find the S10 a GREAT machine, certainly capable of doing anything anyone has any business trying on a public road on two wheels. (But then I'm an old fart ::015::)

A mate of mine who had a "shite" bike we all mocked once said "it is a different kind of fun" and that stuck, and over the years has become more relevant.

Almost all bikes are fun, and there are few that I would not happily ride, on a good road a bike would need to be extremely crap for me not to have fun, and by the same token on a bad road a great bike can be utterly boring.

A review should identify a bikes strong and weak points, and help potential owners work out which ones may be more their kind of bike, what has been really missed by the press is the type of riders buying these bikes, the air cooled GS models had a huge following and very few owners moaned about a lack of power, and I would say the majority of them probably did not really use what they had available - I would guess the amount of GS owners who rev close the to redline more often than not is well under 1%.

I can see how the Ducati and KTM's are now opening up the appeal to people who want 150+ mph motorcycles, but the old "slow" GS was the best selling big bike in Europe for many years, Yamaha aimed at that type of rider, as do Moto Guzzi with the Stelvio and even KTM with a new 1050 that has a mere 100BHP.

On the plus side I think magazines have less impact on buying decisions than ever with most people looking online, for me a test ride is essential, and a bit of googling to find a forum with real owners is the only other pre-purchase activity I engage on - You cannot beat a test ride to see if you like a bike, and forums are great for discovering about problems - again the press aren't going to give you an honest picture here either.

Well, That's just like his opinion..man......... sir.

I traded in a C14 (my 2nd one) for this bike (2015 ES). I only have around 800 miles on it and the motor is breaking in nicely. I doesn't have the time warping rush of the C14 or the sheer solid planted feeling of the 14. What it does have is real world torque, better mpg's & more range. More of an upright seating position & the ability to stand with ease (arthritis sucks)..... Cruise control (see previous). Plus, it will go anywhere there is something that looks like a road... The C14 won't do that without damaging the bike. Trading power for real world versatility & comfort isn't a bad thing.

The problem with a Tenere is that you never get to develop a relationship with your mechanic. You just ride them...mile after mile...and that is about it. I find that the biggest problem I have encountered with my 2014ES is deciding which tires I will buy to replace the stock ones.

Oh no.
The biggest problem is deciding which oil to use.

Must be something wrong with me! I'm reading on how you like your bikes, even my friend who led me into getting one is liking this bike more than me.
This new 2012 with the drive-line shudder, iffy off-idle throttle response (guess I'm spoiled with smooth carb bikes) and sore wrists on longer rides, hasn't really grown on me.
Yes it does many things great and I'm only past the first oil change but I hope the feeling gets better.
I'm getting the clutch basket and CCT replaced next weekend, maybe some throttle adjustments (dealer hasn't sold many S10's so doesn't have much experience fixing these issues.

Heck, I'm the one instructing them about the bike from information from HERE! Which is why I'm glad I found this site! ::001::
I would suggest that maybe you are simply on the wrong bike. If you are that unhappy with it , perhaps you should find something you like better. I had the same kind of experience with my last bike, I thought it was exactly what I wanted but it ended up being a lot of what I didn't want. I'm in the fortunate position of finding that the bike that I really like and wanted was the S10 ;D

Having said that - try and stick with it. I have had a few issues with mine in the few weeks I've owned it but it's such a great bike I know it's worth working through them.

Would i swap my 2015ZE back to my R1 ..... no.
Is my Tenere fun ..... yes. (in 'S' mode it DOES accererate, it does go round corners and comfy and stress free)
Is it an R1 speed and acceleration fuelded, on the edge or in a hedge kinda fun ....... no.
Does that matter ....... not anymore (old age and knackerd knees).

What the majority of bikers in the UK will already know and probably some of the US bikers too, is that the content of MCN is hugely influenced by their sponsors and if Yamaha haven't paid for enough advertising, then MCNs writers won't say nice things about their bikes. That is pretty much how it works and is the reason most UK bikers wouldn't even wipe their arse with MCN, let alone read it :D

Amen, Shrek. I've liked some bikes more than others, but I've never had the experience of riding any bike down the road and thinking to myself "ugh, I'm really not enjoying myself". Doesn't matter if it's an S10, or a Hodaka, or a Royal Enfield, or that piece of crap lawn mower powered minibike that my selfish neighbor only ever let me ride once........

But I digress.

Scooters are awesome, though the little 49cc ones would scare the bejeezus out of me in traffic. Still, I guess I wouldn't be bored, at least.....
+ 1

It's all about the journey and riding the one that makes ya smile. ::008:: I luv me vespa........ It makes me smile! ::021::

I play on several other motorcycle related forums and it's a rare to see threads for the purpose of criticize other brands or riders for their choice of brand. Here it seems to be a regular occurrence. I don't get it.... ::021::

While we may not agree with the moto journalist opinions, they at least have actually ridden and experience the other brand. That's more then most here can claim. Comparing a Super Tenere to a older model competitor, as some here do, doesn't seem like a valid comparison to me.

Yea, it only goes on here. Us Tenere folks are the worst. Lol
BMW folks are the real gentlemen of our passion. They say the nicest things about us over there.

Seriously, this is one of the most civilized forums I am a member of. One of the reasons I LIVE here.

And now that I have actually met 100+ of these fellas, it makes sense why.

I'll stack the Tenere, the forum, and the inmates against any of them.

I'll go along with you there, Snakebitten.; this is in general a pretty respectful site as far as other bikes go. Stromtroopers was the same, though there are always a few members who tend to be biased about one bike or another. The worst site I've ever been on for other brand bashing was one of the Harley forums; it was constant there. No one says "jap bike" with as much vitriol as a middle aged, Road King riding orthodontist.

Hey!!
HODAKA was my first real dirt bike, stripped down Wombat with a 400mm carb and reed valve kit mod.
The thing would kick my friends new Yamaha YZ 125 mono shock.. ::008::

I need to find one photo of me with it.

LOL, I had two basket case Hodakas when I was a kid; a Wombat and I think the other one was called a Super Rat (my memory may be faulty there). Never got either of them to run, but they did teach me how to use tools.....

Starting to hate this bike

This S10 2012, my first new bike, had to get rid of 2 nice older bikes to afford this one, along with the nudging of a friend, and now I'm pissed off I got it.
What put it over the top (not counting the damn shudder it has) is the dealer won't return my call or emails. That really pisses me off. Now I hate this bike!
Worse purchase I've made.
Note to self: don't let a friend help you pick out a bike. Buy what you want.
