Hi Guy's
Having read the article in MCN and other write ups about our beloved S 10, I just don't get it
They mostly say it's bland and lacks character, heavy, cumbersome and uninspiring
Well I did 211 miles today and most of them fast, she growls and snarls and responds to the throttle, sweeps round bends and destroys straights, while encouraging
you to try harder, there's great fed back from the front end and she's very stable.
If you add how well made she is and her reliability, it all adds up to one damn fine Motorbike ::022::
Just as well we all recognize something good when we see it, or you would be put of by these so called experts

I'm not sure what qualifies a writer for MCN as an "expert" on motorcycles, but the important thing to keep in perspective is that unless an article is accompanied my some sort of facts to back it up, it's just some guy's opinion. Especially when his evaluation hinges on such subjective opinions as "uninspiring" and "lacks character". If there's an engineering test that can fairly evaluate "character", I haven't heard of it. If the author had claimed that the S10 had final drive problems because research showed 8% of the bikes sold in 2014 had failures, then I'd take notice, but having a writer evaluate a bike as "lacking character" is about as relevant to me as if he said "blue is pretty". Horsepower, weight, and other stats on the S10 are readily available on line; I don't need someone else to interpret that data for me with less than scientific terms like "lacks power".

Take a lesson from that great philosopher, Jeff Lebowski, and remember: "That's just, like, your opinion, man!"

As you get older, you get wiser than "the experts".
Embrace it. :)

Most of the magazine poges are sport bike enthusiasts. And have poor throttle control. In other words, they get the bike rolling and whack the throttle wide open, then bitch that the S10 is un-inspiring. Character is what you call it when a bike breaks down or requires you to overlook major known issues from the manufacturer. Like FD failures or airboxes leaking dust into the engine, or firmware upgrades that leave bikes in non-running condition... Now that's character!

Yep, the Super Tenere is a boring bike. Just goes and takes you where ever you want to go. Gee, I wish I had a better relationship with my dealer, maybe I should learn German so I can talk to the tech? Naw, I'll just keep riding bikes that actually run more than sit in shops. Oh, and cost less. And are less $$ to maintain. Wait, there's more...... ah, you catch the drift. :D

I've gone through over 90 bikes since I was 16 ::)

Last one was a re-mapped single cam 1200GS..which went as well as a twin cam non watercooled GS. My S10 is way more responsive than my old GS..is just as comfortable..has more toys, does 5-10mpg more, looks better (imho) ..doesn't have the issues the GS is reported to have...and is happy sitting at 100+ two up...

What more do you need from a bike ? How much extra performance could you use without either being locked up or at the least having your licence pulled?

In truth I stopped taking notice of most of the stuff written by so called "experts" most of who are self proclaimed anyway, the time that I stopped taking notice coincides exactly with the time I stopped buying these crap publications, who cow tow to the heavy advertising budgets of manufacturers like BMW who coincidentally seem to be experiencing quality/reliability related issues...again ::)

When I buy a new bike I do factual research mainly by reading forum threads posted by owners and talking to owners they generally tell it as it is.

Bike buyers fall into categories, the younger or newer biker strives to own the fastest lightest most powerful bike that they can, mainly for bragging rights whilst strutting around a bike meeting place looking like a second rate yellow bib, failed racer, I've been there and done that years ago, and the older more experienced rider (me) now that I'm 63 years old I can afford to say that I don't give a sh*t anymore cos I'm not that easily impressed.

BTW, I heard that the definition of an 'expert' is "ex is the endless quantity" and a "spurt is a drip under pressure" :D

Oh I believe that the S10 within the latest MCN article was referred to as an underpowered 1200 V twin ??? that tells you all you need to know

I had been thinking about getting an S10 from the moment I sat on one a few years back, but I was seduced by the hype and so called expert opinions on the MT/FJ09 Tracer and bought one back in March. In it's own right it's a great bike, but for me personally it was too light and skittish/nervous, rock hard suspension and an even harder seat, great motor but with awful fueling and I just could not get on with it. The so called experts had me believing it was great at everything, but in my opinion it was good at some things and not so good at others.

So I bit the bullet lost some money by trading it in so quickly and last month got my S10, ignoring the often negative write ups on it by those so called experts and found it to be the perfect bike for me. It does what is says on the tin and does it all extremely well. When I ride with my mate who has a GS1200 which again we are told is the market leader and best bike, I can't help but completely disagree, again it's a great bike, but only the best bike for those who think it is.

The moral of my story is that all of that is just my opinion but at the end of the day it has to be my opinion which decides how good, or not, a bike is for me. The 'experts' opinions are just their opinions !

Long live the Super Tenere ::008::

I didn't know a bike could be boring. If it has two wheels and a motor, it's like the definition of fun. If you find riding a motorcycle to be boring, then you're doing it wrong.

Exactly, loved every bike I owned, did not really like a few other peoples I rode, but if they were mine I would have made do and enjoyed the sights, sounds and smells that go along with riding.

Avid scooter lover btw ::001::

Amen, Shrek. I've liked some bikes more than others, but I've never had the experience of riding any bike down the road and thinking to myself "ugh, I'm really not enjoying myself". Doesn't matter if it's an S10, or a Hodaka, or a Royal Enfield, or that piece of crap lawn mower powered minibike that my selfish neighbor only ever let me ride once........

But I digress.

Scooters are awesome, though the little 49cc ones would scare the bejeezus out of me in traffic. Still, I guess I wouldn't be bored, at least.....

If your scooter's fast enough that you don't have to ride the fogline while traffic whizzes past your head, then you're good.

Must be something wrong with me! I'm reading on how you like your bikes, even my friend who led me into getting one is liking this bike more than me.
This new 2012 with the drive-line shudder, iffy off-idle throttle response (guess I'm spoiled with smooth carb bikes) and sore wrists on longer rides, hasn't really grown on me.
Yes it does many things great and I'm only past the first oil change but I hope the feeling gets better.
I'm getting the clutch basket and CCT replaced next weekend, maybe some throttle adjustments (dealer hasn't sold many S10's so doesn't have much experience fixing these issues.

Heck, I'm the one instructing them about the bike from information from HERE! Which is why I'm glad I found this site! ::001::

I gelled with my 2014 non ES almost immediately, I'm not a big guy at 5ft 8ins and under 12st, I find it really comfortable with plenty of room to
move around on which is great for the twisties. With the stock seat in the lowest position it feels like I'm sitting in the bike and I guess this helps with the stock screen
making it ok, I like my Super 10 ::008::

There is a thread on here about how to end the sticky throttle problem, very easy I suggest you look at it. Many carbed bikes suffered lack of smoothness as well, thisi s by no means an electronic problem, however many were not so easily cured.

Comfort is always subjective, however the solutions are generally simple and rarely require purchasing a new bike, the simplest thing for you to do is to look into those solutions.

My Vibration largely went away with my 4000 mile service and gear oil change. at the 24k mark when I replace the CCT and valve admustment I Probably will put in an upgraded clutch as well.

In the end if you only look for ways to be dissatisfied with a bike, you will be. However if you enjoy the ride, and how that ride gets there, any bike suddenly becomes joy as you appreciate the experience overall.
