I didn't pre-order but my dealer says they can definitely get me one

I posted about this last week, and promised to make a new thread with an update when I have one...

Last Saturday I stopped at my local dealer to ask whether there's any chance to get one, when I didn't pre-order. They looked at their computer and said they thought they could get me one. Then they quoted me a stupid high OTD price. I said we can talk dollars once we know for sure they can get one; there's no sense me arguing with salespeople about dollars for vapor-bikes.

So today I stopped in again. They said they followed up directly with Yamaha this week, and they can definitely get me one, any color I want, and have it for me in one week. They think Yamaha has plenty of them in the warehouse. They cannot, however, order it until they have signed paperwork and a deposit - Yamaha won't let them put one on the floor just on spec; they will send one right away but only if there's an order. They quoted me the same stupid high price. I said that while I am very excited about this bike, I am not going to pay a price that makes me feel like an idiot. Waiting would let me see what Honda unveils in the fall before I decide, and I am not without patience.

I live in a place where I cannot ride year round, but I sold my pickup in April and am currently bikes-only. I was planning to buy a brand new car before the snow comes. But the financial plans for the new car, could buy me an S10 and a used car. A woman's gotta have her priorities straight after all. ;D

So, what's the price that I should tell my dealer will bring me off the fence, to buy an S10 this week? Where do I draw the dollar line, between buying now and waiting for winter? What are other people paying for theirs? Anyone have websites with pricing, or better yet is anyone willing to share actual documentation of what you paid, that I could show to my dealer?

Also I am curious whether anyone else has had this kind of discussion with a dealer. It is surprising to me that they are so sure they could just get one like this, when we've had all this drama and scarcity here.

Hi Katherine,

As I said over on Advrider, I don't think people who didn't participate in the PDP should be expecting to pay anything other than MSRP right now, given the bike's apparent sudden popularity (now that they are "real") and scarcity. You didn't say what the dealer quoted, but if over MSRP then I'd definitely walk.

BUT... (and it's a big BUT)

If what your dealer says is true and Yamaha has a secret stash, that kinda squashes the supply side of the argument if they are not as rare as we think. I would ask some other dealers, if they come back with the same answer (that they can get a bike) then surely some will negotiate a bit. It might be difficult though - remember a lot of dealers wouldn't budge from MSRP even for the pre-orders.

Good luck!

As a person who didn't participate in PDP, I wasn't even expecting to get a bike at all now. If it's available, I'll follow that up, but if it costs extra to get it now I will wait.

The price they are quoting me is $15,400ish OTD. Breakdown is the $13,900 MSRP, 6% Michigan sales tax, a little over $100 for the title and registration, and something they call "plus plus" fees for delivery and assembly that they claim are standard. They are not getting that from me - I will walk away. The taxes and title/registration fees are set by the gov't; I'm not expecting the dealer to drop those. This "plus plus" stuff is another thing entirely. I don't have to get the best price ever, but I won't be made a fool of. If they can knock a couple hundred bucks off the MSRP, and drop the goofball "plus plus" fees, I'll probably go for it.

If they say they have plenty in the warehouse, you might want to shop around other dealers to see if you get a lower price. Good luck on your search.

Katherine, I have posted this to your before. My dealer has a black one that someone backed out of. We talked about this today and he is against screwing a buyer. I think you could buy the bike for 13,000 plus tt and l.. Which is not a bad deal, all things considered.
Good Luck

Thanks for the info, I appreciate it. I could easily ride it home from there, too - but I'd have to get a plane ticket, and time off work, which means I probably couldn't get it until September. Better to pursue my local options, I think.

First of all Katherine welcome to deciding that you want an S10. Secondly I can say that my son and I have just come back from a 2000km+ trip in the north of Sweden, fully packed and with fishing gear. The bike performed admirably, flawlessly, with one exception where I felt intimidated by the total weight on one particular rough gravel road and decided to turn back. Thirdly, some years ago on the v-strom forum you recommended that I buy LD undergarments for my butt burn and that worked out just fine. So, to my point, also living in a place where where the bike cannot be driven all year round, I suggest getting the car first and holding off until this PDP nonsense is over and taking the plunge next season. Logic aside I bought my S10 last year with one month of riding season left ;-) I have no regrets.

I agree on supporting the local dealer. It just seemed they were charging a bit much. Just wanted to give you more options. :)

Well, I sent KSH's link to my dealer, along with an offer for a little more than that. I told her we can do cash or finance, whatever she likes best. They are closed on Mondays so hopefully I'll hear from her on Tuesday. If she won't cut a deal, though, I'll wait.

If you can not reach a deal, you may consider having a bike shipped. I think you could get that done cheaper than your locals original price.

Ship? Ship? If I were to buy a bike from a dealer in MN, I would fly out and ride it home. It's only one day's ride, Delta Northwest has a zillion flights there every day, and I know people in the area. Apart from the nightmare-that-is-Chicago, it would be an easy trip. The biggest hassle would be the fact that without 21 day advance purchase, they kill you on airfare. Well, that and airports are awful places.

My dealer order two for me. No joke. I put down my deposit and got one ordered. I went in later to do the special financing Yamaha was offering before everything went sideways. Well, my wife could get a better rate so another bike was ordered in her name. The one I picked on Saturday was hers. Mine is sitting on the showroom floor with my name on it. LOL

Black is faster.

If you are still shopping around...

I've bought 6 bikes from Doug, everything but my KTM So they treat me right. Other people hate the dealership. <shrug>

BTW: I paid 14,200 + DMV which is fairly high in Oregon. $75 title service fee. $200 title fee from the state. Extra $200 for custom plates. Blah, blah, blah. What can I say, we don't have sales tax so we get hammered on everything else.

My $0.02

Katherine,

I went into my dealer on Thursday, asked if they had any coming in that were available for me to put a deposit on. They had (2) available that were ordered thru PDP in salespersons names so they could have them on the floor. I put down my deposit expecting delivery sometime in Sept, they called me the next morning and said the truck just left and they had the bike in already!

I knew I would not get a deal on cost from the get go, so I did pay MSRP because I really wanted the bike for the remainder of this riding season. The dealer is and will give me a greater discount on accessories so I expect it will all balance out in the long run cost wise, they also gave me my asking price on my VFR as a trade without negotiating or under cutting me so all in all I am a very happy ST owner!

I'm totally in favor of the dealer making a profit, but I'm not paying $500 over MSRP to give them one. Especially when they don't even have to carry the bike in their inventory for more than the day or two it will take them to uncrate it and call me to pick it up. :)
