Today I was riding the Lockhart Basin Road and in the process I managed to put a rock through the skid plate and cracked the bottom of the case. I was able to lay the bike on its side and put some JB weld on it and ride it out. But I do not trust my patch job to ride it all the way to Whitehorse so I think I am going to get it welded.

I am Camping in Moab UT tonight, does anyone know of a good tig welder in around here?

Now that I am typing this I am realizing that I will likely need a new gasket even if I get it welded so I might just order the part and have it shipped here. Does anyone know of a good online parts place that ships fast?

Over all it has been a great trip with a few set backs. I will try and post some photos up later.

Since Moab is a 4x4 mecca, there should be lots of welders around. Here are a few places to try, that are welders, welding supply or who could point you in the right direction.

What skid do you have?

Good luck!

Thanks for offer TABASCO, and thanks everyone else for all the information! I am going to check out some of the places in town tomorrow, if I can get it welded for under a hundred I will probably get it done so it can be done and over with. If not I will order the part and have it shipped somewhere along my route and put it one later. If I do this, then tomorrow I will clean up the JB weld and put on another coat.

I have a Touratech skid plate, I was moving along at a good clip when my front tire hit a long skinny rock, lets say about 5 inches by 10. The rock popped up in such a way that one end hit the skid plate and the other jammed into the ground. This caused the front of the bike to catapult into the air and leave the hole that you can see in the following pictures.

The picture of the skid plate does not do it justace, but shows that the area that was damaged was covered.

Thanks again for all the information.

That doesn't look like the pass over cover for the dry sump.. That looks like the whole bottom case... It can be fixed but pretty tricky... Let us know how it works out.... Be safe ! ::008::

??? :-[
damnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn

This is why I'd like a little more ground clearance on the bike.

I've done this to the skid plate on my jeep, but that's made of steel so there was no impaling just a large dent and about 2 hours of hammering it out.

The good thing is you're in MOAB. if anyone in the world can weld custom stuff, it's the jeep community out there, they'd be happy to help you out, I love that area.
See if perhaps they can patch up the skid plate too, reinforce the front.

Ouch!! Sorry you experienced a little "extra" on your trip. Thanks goodness for JB Weld, eh? That reminds me to check the expiration date on mine...

Hope you can get it repaired quickly and rightly.

JB saved a Bm'rs oil filter in Death Valley. Made it all the way to Victorville not a drop.

That incident is what made me upgrade from the Yama plate to a AltRider.

JB Weld and a small amount of steel wool. Mix it together and you will have a very strong patch job. I have used this a few times and works better than just using JB Weld alone. It will fill and seal gaps, cracks, and voids better. ::008::

Another tip for steel wool. Be extra careful of your storage for it!

Steel wool and Battery 1 min fire.wmv

Ryan, I hope you get your bike repaired and let us know how it goes.
That's a great idea! I bet you could use a 12v lead off the bike and do the same thing. I don't normally carry a 9v battery..
