That's a great idea! I bet you could use a 12v lead off the bike and do the same thing. I don't normally carry a 9v battery..
Maybe, but do you want to create fire that close to your motorcycle? 9V battery does not weigh or take up much space.

I looked into getting a new part from Yamaha, but as far as I could tell there are none in the states and any Yamaha dealer would have to get one from Japan and it would be at least 2 weeks. So back to the plan of welding. I went down to Moab Powersports and they got me in touch with a welder that had time to get it done today.

So got it all back together tonight and realized that the WIX filter that I got is not recessed enough to allow the filter to seal before it bottoms out.

So looking at the maintenance items thread here. I see the a Bosch 3300 is supposed to fit the bike. The WIX filter that I got is supposed to be a direct replacement for the Bosch.

Tomorrow morning I am off to look for a replacement. I need to be the same length or shorter then stock, has anyone actualy bought and used a filter from one of the following places?
In Moab there is:
Carquest
OReillys
Napa

Ryan, if you have the filter that was on the engine before the accident, take it with you and match it. Make sure it is not too long. Wish I could help you more.

I use the Bosh 3300 on my bike and it works just fine. It is little longer than the stock filter, but it should fit if you have a bash plate that is not against the OEM filter.

On edit, I did a search and found the bosh 3300 will not work with the ALTrider skid plate, unless you turn the bolt that is near the filter.
You may be better off with a filter that matches the OEM..

It fits (and removes) with the Altrider skid installed.

O'Reillys has them.

Thanks guys, I ended up going with the Mobile 1 and it looks like it will work well. There was a WIX that would work but it was a little long to fit with the skid plate.

After 200 miles of dirt roads it looks like the fix is going to work!

See you guys in Canada!

JB Weld and a small amount of steel wool. Mix it together and you will have a very strong patch job. I have used this a few times and works better than just using JB Weld alone. It will fill and seal gaps, cracks, and voids better. ::008::

Brilliant, will be adding some steel wool to my kit ASAP!

Hey guys, I just thought I would chime in on the JB Weld.

My favorite, and what I used on this other repairs is the JB Weld Stick.

http://jbweld.net/products/jbstik.php

This makes for a super simple field repair, I have used it successively on a radiator and now this oil pan. It creates a thick play-dough like goop that will stick to most any clean surface.

For those interested here is a link to the ride report:
