I would Hope to see the Pan America do better in reliability (as per polled owners) than the current crop of Harleys, otherwise it'll probably be a no-go for me. Doesn't look to me like it's no longer an issue for Harley's current bikes.

That’s six years old that data.
The data was published 6 years ago on 4 year old bikes. That is certainly NOT the current crop of Harleys.

Reliability hasn't been an issue for years. some of you guys talk out you arse. . . .
"I" don't talk shit about anybody, or anything, unless I know it to be fact. . . . or experienced it myself. Ft. Worth PD, a H-D customer or years, didn't know what they were going to ride. . . . but, they knew it wasn't going to be H-D. Too much down time, and repair costs. Long story short, Honda canned the ST, and Kawi never got behind the 1400 Connie. . . . so BMW it was. They love them. . . . because they get traded every three years.

Personally, I don't care what anybody rides, if they like it. . . . 'cuz, I'm gonna ride what I like. But, don't piss on my leg, and tell me it's raining. :)

Yeah what ever! CHP rides Hd sells them for more the they paid for them when done. What they ride as with most states and municipalities is all about the contract price low bidder! The rest is conjecture and bullshit. I have had 4 HD’s over 400,000 Trouble free miles. I’m in a Harley owners group and I don’t hear anyone complaining about engine issues or drivability issues. I have had a couple of friends have engine problems but this was after they did numerous upgrades going from a 114 to a 124 Stock bikes have had little problem. BMW please! Fine bike But far from perfect and very expensive for repairs. poor dealer support. My Yamaha S 10 lousy suspension now the CCT problem hard start Issues. I didn’t want to spend BMW money to go to Alaska so I got a brand New Shaft drive Yamaha for 10k less. loaded up with all your gear and it falls over on its side stand. It dies at stop lights. and a dozen other issues that are well known and talked about on this site. I’ll take my chances with a Harley. I call balls and strikes. If you have people pissing on your leg that’s your fault.

Your inaccurate statement is actually counter to the point you are trying to make. CHP is (or at least was) a national leader in patrol vehicle testing and research that many other agencies refer to on such matters. Sure, a general fleet vehicle might go low bid but an emergency services vehicle would go sole source exemption on some sort of performance review.

Unrelated, DC Metro PD has gone from HD to BMW. It's a sizable fleet.

Sorry you have had a bad experience with your S10.

I knew Bobs BMW near me sold the bikes and your post made me curious to look up the contract.

Sole source - DC is not going to buy any more Harleys, period. They found the BMWs to be both safer and have better features, regardless of what the Harley faithful think.

You had better read up on the oil migration problem on the 18 and up models that are eating their transmissions by the trucks full. They are having an issue with the trans fluid being sucked through the clutch push rod bore and into the primary side. I serviced one last week that had 8 ozs of trans fluid left in it and 54 ozs in the primary side. Each side holds 32 oz.

No mention of better reliability which I was speaking to. DC Metro and safety Laughable. Just more opinion. And feelings. Looks like somebody wanted to line Bob’s pockets No one else in the country could provide the motorcycles debatable good old boy network just like DC. I’m surprised all you fan boys don’t own BMWs

I've been told that H-D's only/main advantage over other bikes is at bike rodeos. Contrary to what I thought, they turn tighter than other makes.

1) I hate Beemers.
2) I don't have anything against H-D. People should know by now what they're getting when they buy one.
3 If you hate the Tenere so much, sell it, and use that money as a down payment on a new H-D so you can be happy with a bike that will never fail.
4) I have no use for close minded people.

I see some irony in the two sentences I highlighted.

Instead of 'knowing' I'm right, I actually researched and read. There are three BMW dealers in the region, and only Bob's could do the police prep. Sorry, but no municipal procurement department is going to source what is essentially a dealer modified vehicle from across the country.

In today's age of online documentation requirements and FOIA, the good old boy network isn't what it was. But I suspect nobody will change your mind... about anything. Good luck and goodbye.

Regardless of the last 118yrs of Harley, which mostly are junk to me, this motorcycle in theory and looks, appears to be something pretty appealing. Maybe the days of 50hp, huge engine, goofy sitting with legs 4ft forward and arms 2ft high are going away. I like it and it looks so far to be a big hit to a lot of guys.

I think the headlight looks interesting, sort of joilie laide. It reminds me of psilons from the '70s version of Battlestar Galactica, however. I'd like to check it out, but am not that interested in buying one. Feel like I just have the S10 finally dialed-in. I also just like to ride bikes that provide different experiences from what I'm used to. Curious to see what this one is like. I'd like to see HD succeed and branch out from where they've been.

Got me looking around. UK police use BMW and Yamaha FJs, with the FJs being more favoured currently, I believe(?)

Wiki:
Motorcycles are used by a number of forces in the UK, usually by the Road Policing Unit. Police motorcycles are also used in road safety initiatives such as Bikesafe, a national program to reduce motorcycle casualties in which police motorcyclists provide advanced rider training to members of the public.[4]

Some Metropolitan Police Special Escort Group officers also use motor cycles. These officers may be identified by their side arms as they are the only armed motor cycle police in London, apart from a small section of the Parliamentary and Diplomatic Protection unit who use motorcycles to respond quickly to incidents faster than the PaDP ARVs can.

The motorcycles used by police include the BMW R1200RT, Honda ST1100 Pan-European, and Yamaha FJR1300. The Honda ST1300 Pan-European was the most popular bike, but it was withdrawn from service by most forces in 2007,[5] following the death of a Merseyside police motorcyclist in 2005 in an accident caused by an instability in the model when outfitted with police equipment.[6]

The ST/Pan's high speed wobble caused the death of an officer and saw its demise: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/merseyside/6600897.stm

I know a lot of people with Harley's and as far as I can tell they seem to be as good as anything on the road. I have a buddy with a road glide and it has big miles on it. Never let him down but he did do some sort of oil pump upgrade or something and did something to the ecu. He had been all over the country on that bike and it is still going. I have another who had a sportster. He did have to replace the key switch and every few thousand miles has to bolt everything back on it but breaking down it never did. We would have to stop our road trips to put blinkers foot pegs and sissy bars and yes even handle bars one back on the thing! He rode the crap out of that thing though and it always went like hell. the only thing that kept him from keeping up with sport bikes in Deals Gap was ground clearance. He would shower sparks off both sides of that thing. He was fun to watch. Scary but fun. Any way mechanically I figure the new Harley will be as good as anything out there. All the software and electronics are going to be the worry. I work with software and electronics every day and that is one thing I really don't want on my bikes. It looks like I no longer have any choice on that. Even my Super Tenere has more of that than i would like. If they can get the electronics to work right and stay working I think they will have a decent bike to build on. I still don't like the nose too much though! Probably not what I would buy if I had to replace my bike but I am interested in the project. Competition only helps the market.
