Off-topic is my middle name. (drives these fine folks nuts)

So start a thread and explain? I'd like to hear more about it. :)

Re: What you did to your Tenere today??!!

I spent the day and 200 miles trying to find out what is causing pain to the left side of my neck and back of my skull when riding my S10 which I have owned for about three weeks.
I have never experienced this before on a bike until I got my S10 (which I love) I did some searches on here and read some posts about similar issues.
I am fine until I reach about 20 miles then the discomfort starts, it's not really bad pain but it is very uncomfortable and spoils my ride. If I take my helmet off and take a break its fine again until I hit the 20 mile mark again. and so it goes on. I am presuming the head discomfort stems from my neck, shoulders or back rather than my head itself ! As everything is fine other than when I'm on my bike as described.

So far I have done the seat bump mod, that definitely made my sitting position nicer. I have adjusted the bars forwards and backwards. I tried 1 and 1/8th inch (30mm) risers, again tried the bars in various positions. When I am riding in normal set up - stock bars in nuetral position and with the seat bump mod it feels right and like it should be perfectly okay but still I get the discomfort after 20 miles until I stop. I actually have to stop to relieve the discomfort which is mainly on the back of my head and only on the left side ! Weird !!!

The only other thing I read about and have not tried yet is new straighter bars which have been suggested, although I find it difficult to see that making a difference ??

Any further suggestions would be very welcome as I need to try and get this sorted out before a long trip in 4 weeks time

Thanks

Hey Groundhog. It's the bar sweep that's killing you.invest in protaper raptor bend.less sweep.little taller.no more pain.easier to ride standing.

Groundhog,

If you do what Paul466 suggests, or even better, buy the 15° Fastco Flexx bars, and you do NOT think they have addressed the issue, ........
Then you can list the bars in the For Sale section of this forum and I will give you what you paid for them. :)

All you have to try to understand it is to close your eyes, put your arms out in a neutral position, and make contact with the grips of the bars. You will notice real quickly that the outside of the palm (in riding position) contacts first, and you will likely be off by a large number of degrees to make full contact while be in this neutral position. When you force yourself to ride outside of your ergonomic position, you end up adjusting in other ways that causes issues not necessarily related to the problem at hand. Much like poor arch support for your feet and back problems. Do the handlebars, You wont regret it.

snakebitten what a really helpful offer ::008:: Thanks mate I appreciate you trying to help. You must have a lot of confidence in those Fastco Flex bars !!!

The problem I have is that neither the Fastco or Protaper Raptor bars are available here in the UK. Do you have Renthal in the US ? They do a bar i can get here to fit the S10 that looks like it has much less sweep back and the price is reasonable

Also thanks Paul and autoteach ::008:: It seems the bars are the culprit then !! I will be interested to try your eyes closed experiment autoteach, it makes complete sense.

Just to cover all the bases; you wouldn't happen to be wearing a brand new helmet...
Will none of the vendors like Revzilla, Chaparell , etc not ship over seas?

As it happens Don my helmet is only a few months old, but I rode about a thousand miles with it on my previous bike with no issues ?

Yes i guess I could get them shipped, but I suspect the shipping will cost as much as the bars

+1. The sweep messes with me as well. Too much strain between the shoulder blades and on the neck.
I've dragged my feet on buying the Fasst flex bars. Maybe this will be the year. The tradeoff is I'll be rubbing against the tank bag.

Re: Re: What you did to your Tenere today??!!

Groundhog, there's a spreadsheet around here somewhere that has a TON of bars listed with their dimensions.
So, you can likely find a bar that has similar geometry to the ones that have been suggested.

I'll google something like handlebar spreadsheet site:yamahasupertenere.com and see what pops up.

Keep in mind the Tenere bar is one of the widest ever. But that's a goooood thing, imo.
But it has a severe sweep, one of the biggest ever. Lol

Try something WIDE, but with 15-19° of sweep. Brand shouldn't matter.

Good luck!

Re: The Handlebar Spreadsheet Thread

If you guys find any other bars that ought to be in the spreadsheet please PM me the necessary info and I will gladly add it in there. Or better yet, grab an excel copy and add it in and send that to me and I will upload the updated version.

Re: The Handlebar Spreadsheet Thread

The spreadsheet is great. I have found suitable bars I can get in the UK. Only thing concerning me is that the area needed to fit the controls seems to be less than the minimum (as far as I can see) of 220mm needed to fit everything in ? All the bars seem to have 200mm or less. Am I missing something here ?

The S10 stock bars seem to have a bit of extra space but everyone always seems to manage to fit the required gear on there so I wouldn't sweat it.

All I have is this. They say they are changed in shape as well as material, but I don' know the particulars on how much change in shape.

Re: The Handlebar Spreadsheet Thread

Great diagram Fred -

All - To be open about having done so, a bit of trimming just got performed in this thread to cut some of the remarks which fluffed up the thread and a few redundant questions.

Can anybody provide dimensions for TPAK to update with, or to answer Regulator's question?

Thanks!

Re: The Handlebar Spreadsheet Thread

What a great help the spreadsheet was to me. I had serious neck/shoulder pain with the standard bars. First I found a thread which let me know I was far from alone with this problem, then the spreadsheet made finding the correct choice of replacement bars easy ::008::

Thanks to all who contributed to the thread and the spreadsheet, without those I would still be in pain with no real idea why !! ::008:: ::008::

Fred, wondering if they added the 10mm of more grip room for the controls.

Yamaha did a lot to reduce handlebar vibration. And after my 2012 was broke in most of the vibration was gone... except for the clutch basket vibration. After my 2012 engine was rebuilt and a new clutch basket installed I immediately noticed all handlebar vibration was gone. It was difficult to trade it in on the 2015 ES.

Next week the new Rox risers will arrive for the 2015 ES. I am hoping I don't need new handlebers.
