I typically prefer a flatter, straighter, narrower bar than what comes on the S10. I'm not keen on the angle they put on my wrist, and I seem to get a pressure point on the inside of my right thumb because of this.

I have Moose CR-Lo bars on the 1000 Strom, with 3/4" cut off each end, and whenever I switch between the Strom and the S10 I'm struck by the less barge-like feeling of the Strom. I know some of that is down to less weight, but a lot of it has to do with bars and riding position I think.

I don't want the same bend on the Super Tenere, mostly because I appreciate how much easier it is to get up on the pegs and stay there with the higher bars. But less angle on the wrists and less width would be very nice.

I guess my choices are limited a) cos they have to be Fatbars (right? 1" tapering to 7/8") and b) cos I want steel not aluminium. I've had the experience of severely bending a steel bar in the middle of nowhere, but a 40 mile ride with a vertical throttle got me to an oxy set and with heat we were able to straighten the bars as good as new. Wouldn't be possible with aluminium.

Anyone know of anything that might work for me?

These are my current Moose (unfortunately not in red!)

I've been looking to change bars as well. I believe the stock bars are 1" 1/8" not 1" in the center.

I don't want flatter. I would like it higher so wouldn't have to use bar risers.

I found these interesting

Easton 38mm Woods bar in combination with their universal clamps look interesting.

Thanks Longboard - I looked at the Easton, maybe ok but I don't want aluminum, and they are quite expensive.

I found that Moose makes the CR-HI and CR-LO in a fat-bar style, in steel. For $23. Worth a try eh? Presumably they have the same bend as the CR-LO 7/8" bars I have on the Strom. The cr-lo may be too low though, so will try the HI first.

I have no idea how these specs compare to the stock bars - anyone know?

CR-HI
Constructed from 2mm thick carbon steel for high strength.
Knurled center clamp area prevents slipping in the heat of battle.
Plastic end caps prevent bars from cutting through grips.
Durable powder coated finish.
Available in black in two popular bends to suit personal riding styles.
Color-matching crossbar pad included.
Dimensions: 63mm Pullback, 800mm Width, 91mm Rise, 165 Base Width

CR-LO
Constructed from 2mm thick carbon steel for high strength.
Knurled center clamp area prevents slipping in the heat of battle.
Plastic end caps prevent bars from cutting through grips.
Durable powder coated finish.
Available in black in two popular bends to suit personal riding styles.
Color-matching crossbar pad included.
Dimensions: 67mm Pullback, 810mm Width, 68mm Rise, 165 Base Width

I seem to remember a while back some one was asking about this and Wasp published these fancy 3d drawings with every dimension imaginable on the stock bars. I can't remember if it was here or over on ADV. I will keep looking and see if I can find it again.

Thanks for the TIPPY Ron, they sound like they could be just the thing. Googling Tippy now...

bad news - looks like the handlebar arm has been taken over by Mexicans!

That's a bit hard to swallow ::025::

maddog, it was here. I asked about the bend of the OEM bars. It is probably under Modifications.

Yes, exactly. I ordered the CR-HI, which I can see now is 9mm higher. Might be ok - if not these bars are cheap enough that I can get the CR-LO.

Big difference, if I'm reading the diagram right, is 142mm pullback on the Yam bars, vs 63 on the CR-HI. That's what I want, a straighter bar. I've never had a bike with that much pullback, and after 4000 miles it still feels weird.

Plus it's 20mm narrower, and I'll probably take another 20-30 off if I'm able to.

We'll find out next week!

I am curious to see how you mount the bar ends in the new handle bars. The Tenere has nuts inside the bar that the bolts go into. Back in my VStrom days I remember guys making a set up with some rubber hose, nuts, and bolts for when thicker walled aluminum bars were used.

I have ordered extra mounts from dirtbike handguards before with success in other applications.

One thing you will notice with narrower bar is an increased amount of effort needed to engage a turn and hold a line in a curve. The wider bar eases this effort and makes the bike feel even more nimble.

For you guys that are do handlebar swaps, keep us updated about what you find - I'm in the same boat and the angle of my wrists is just wrong with the stock bars.... but I still want the height and width of the stock bars.
I checked out Pro-taper and Renthal bars but like mentioned above they seem too low, but in another thread Spiegler "Tour bars" were mentioned. These guys are unknown to me anybody with experience??

hey O2 overspeed, on the ProTaper, did you look at the Contour Raptor bend? It is taller than stock, as is the Contour ATV HI, which is a flatter bend, but taller for us. Just a thought

Hoebster - You may be on to something, I went to my local Cycle Gear, they focus their sales on the dirt bike crowd - so when I went through their bars (they had a good collection) they were all just for dirt bikes, didn't even think to ask about ATV bends.... pretty sure they didn't have any, I'll swing back and see if anyone around has ATV bars. That might work.
Is that what you are using? anyone else? ::001::

I like this bar I think, but don't see how it can be mounted on the bike... The oem bars are 28.5 mm, or 1 1/8" as you state at the mounts, per Greg's drawing. The Easton Wood bar, if i have the right thing, is this it...

Easton Wood

is shown to be 35 mm diameter at the mounts.

The lower part of the bar riser on the bike is one piece with the triple tree. I don't see how you could use any of Easton's mounts, or the existing mount.

Someone chime in if I'm being dense... but as I see options are:

Fit a 1 1/8" mount diameter bar,
Use a bolt on converter for a 1 1/8" to whatever, like a set of bar risers with different diameters.... so far I haven't seen such a thing, but I am looking.
Use a Super Tenere specific product.

I am totally new to the idea of replacing bars... just trying work this all out.... do I have it or not?

I have the Contour Raptor bars in my garage waiting to replace the stock OEM bars. The bend is the same as the KLR OEM bars so that works for me. The Raptor has to be 1" taller than the stock bars and this is good. I need to decide if I am reusing the stock handguards or finding something else. Maier makes a very protective handguard.
