Don't worry about it Nelson we will be fine. I've ridden more in the USA than in Canada and the only time I wish I had gun is when we where in Quebec .

So what do guys typically carry when doing the Alaska ride from the lower 48 when they have to cross the Canadian border? A big knife and bear spray?

I considered shipping a handgun from CA FFL to AK FFL and from AK FFL to MT FFL. Decided to leave it in WA until I returned. Ended up not going.

Some might never consider carrying a handgun. Ask those same persons would you feel better if you were carrying $1,000-$2,000 cash and a loaded handgun.

Camping with a handgun. The last thing I want to do is shoot a bear, cougar, etc. In Canada use what is allowed, bear spray and air horn and ???

Just spent six weeks on the road last summer from Ontario to Alaska never thought about a gun. Could have taken one of my shot guns but took the camera instead. Lots of bears on Prince of Wales Island.

Actually, last I heard, no bowie knives north of the border either. Something like six inches was max. As noted though, you apparently can declare a twelve gauge.

I've never had issues with bears in the lower 48 even when I've had close encounters with them. Shooting one with a pistol would be a last resort. But it would feel weird traveling without my gun. It goes everywhere with me.

Must be nice but for how much longer? That guy in the White House is starting with banning any thing black. Handguns are next. Better not say too much. Lot of liberal weenies out there.
Does it strike anyone else as strange that liberals are always the weenies for not liking guns, yet gun owners most often have them because they are fearful of this or that? Logically, that means the weenies are fear-less!

(Either that or they are smart enough to know situations where you might need a gun are so rare that carrying is a lot of trouble for nothing, and that if you ever did need one there's a very good chance that using it would make the situation worse. I'm 55, have travelled all over the world and have never been in a situation where I thought a gun would be useful.)

The saying goes,a gun is like a parachute...if you need it once and don't have it, you, will never need it again! The weenies wanna take my "parachute "cause its black and it scares them!

Although I do not care to disclose when or if I have something concealed at any given time, it was impossible to keep this one a secret today.

Nice warm day and wanted to shoot my...lets just call it a long gun. Did not have a suitable automobile available to get to the range down the dirt, pot hole filled road. Hummm, did I just say dirt, pot hole filled road...I got a great idea.

Never needed one... thats great. Just wish I was smart enough to avoid all those situations and places where I would never need such a crude tool. Maybe by the time I'm 55 I will have attained such "enlightenment". ::025::

You're right - maybe I've just been lucky. I don't know what enlightenment has to do with it, and I just mention my age to emphasize that I wasn't born yesterday :D and there has been plenty of opportunities for bad stuff to happen. Lucky, yes, but I've also learned to use some common sense.

If someone is frequently finding themselves in a situation where they need a gun (or think they do), it's either part of their job, or they are living in the wrong neighborhood, or they are doing something wrong.

I like the parachute analogy - if you are flying an ultralight, sure, wear a parachute. But if you are flying commercial? Not necessary. Most of us fly commercial...

With "logic" like that, you should immediately stop wearing a helmet, etc. or any other "just in case" apparel Mr. Fear-less.

You never need a gun....until you do. When traveling away from home on a bike, especially solo, you're vulnerable. Nothing will likely happen to you, but bad stuff does happen. I want bad stuff to happen to the bad guys, not to the peaceful and law abiding.

I for one admire you Trevor , I've following your trip through Mexico must say you have bigger balls than me. I'm not trying to stir the pot but coming from north of the border it really makes me wonder how safe it is to travel through the USA.
Signed Big wiener North of the border..

Steer clear of "gun free zones" and you should be fine. ::008::

I don't want to start a political debate here so if you are a nut on either side of the spectrum, keep your opinions at bay.
Thought I would let MurphCO have his word again.

I like that analogy. A couple of times a gun could have been handy when I found an injured animal on the side of the road. Thats about it. But then again I'm from Canada and things are different here. We have other things to worry about like staying warm.
