what procedure did you execute?:
1) did you adjust the filter box and then tried to plug in the hose? or….
2) plugging in the hose was the first thing you did…and then you fitted the filter box to the Throttle body
I ask because using the second method it is easy to attach the hose
No. 2

I did not have a long enough, and the right type of needle nose pliers. So what I did was replaced the stupid clamp with a garden hose variety that is screwed tight. Easier to do with a long screw driver.

From my experience. In 75k miles and nine years. I have probably had 4-5 hard starts. Havent had one in 3 years now. They happen at the strangest times. It never left me stranded but it was scary alone in the boondocks with no cell service. Autozone 14s battery got critical. I got an Antigravity jumper after that and Never leave without it. Everybody needs one. If mine doesn't start normally. I whip out the jumper immediately and plug it in and it'll fire up. I've experimented at home with trying to induce a hard start. I can't make mine flooded eniough for it to not start with a cold or warm engine. I've cycled the key 10+ times.. It'll cough and backfire a little but it does start. Twisting the throttle has no effect. FWIW Mine is flashed with a PCV and I run regular 87 gas. Tried premium and the only difference was my wallet go thinner I haven't tried a lithium battery. Heard they seem to help with hard starts. I hate to say it but if you haven't had the 2 wiring recalls. You need to do it. They have been known to do strange things to some Gen1. Good luck.
Thank you. That gives me a lot of hope for a long relationship with this bike :) . I did a VIN check on Yamaha website and indeed it shows that the wire harness recall was not rectified on my bike. I will be contacting the dealer today and hopefully, they will still do it for free

Batteries are cheap and I ordered a KMG YTZ12S battery.

Has anyone tried the NOCO Lithium NLP14 battery on S10?

They'll definitely still do it for free. I just had mine done a couple of weeks ago. It may take a week or two for them to get the parts.
Once you give them your VIN, they'll run it through their computer and find every recall and associated service bulletin related to your specific bike and then order all of the parts.

Put the Lithium battery into the search box on here and you'll likely find the answer. Lithium or not, lots replace the 12S with the 14S for good starting results.

Update: Yesterday I found some time to tinker with the bike some more. Plugged in a new battery, no luck still after trying both suggestions!

1. Tried @Ss1 #5 https://yamahasupertenere.com/index.php?threads/frustrated-that-used-bike-i-bought-is-not-starting-now.32978/post-493979 :(
2. Tried @RCinNC #8 https://yamahasupertenere.com/index.php?threads/frustrated-that-used-bike-i-bought-is-not-starting-now.32978/post-493985. After removing Fuse #4 (Fuel Injection), the engine pops for sure on 2nd or 3rd crank, so was hopeful. But after replacing fuse, no start! :(

I measured the voltage on old battery and new battery, and they both seem to be good @ 12.8v

Next I am thinking of the following:
  1. Check ignition coils to see if there is spark.
  2. Get wire harness recall rectified from a dealer.
Anything else I can try?

I'm beginning to think maybe the cams jumped out of time? Has the cam chain tensioner been updated to the Gen 2 design? If not and you have 40,000 or so miles on it the Gen 1 tensioners have been known to fail and let the cam chain jump, You'd need to pull the valve cover and clutch cover to comfirm.

Oh wow, that is a big job. I don't think any updates have been done to this bike. I recently bought this bike used and it seems like even the recalls have not been rectified.
I will try the easier things 1st before I mess with the cam chains and valves. I suspect it is something simple, I test-drove the bike and even rode it 50km home, the engine runs very smooth, but only after it starts:D

Thanks for the tip, and I have put it too on my list :).

Is the S10 engine a non-interference engine? My 2002 Toyota Tacoma pistons will not hit valves if timing belt breaks, wondering if Tenere is the same.

The super Ténéré has an interference engine. There are a few posts about bent valves when the cams go far enough out of time.

My cct started to rattle a little and got worse. I thought they all gave a warning before they totally failed.

My Yamaha dealer got back and said that only one recall is pending i.e. the (Wire Harness). I scheduled a appointment with then on Dec 9th so they can fix it. I will have to tow the bike to them. Hopefully that may fix my "no start" situation.

Thank you to all you members suggested remedies

I had similar start problems many years ago with my Audi when the timing belt tensioner got stuck and the timing went haywire. Is it possible that the cam tensioner is broken and the cam chain has jumped?

I would check the timing marks.

Update: Yippee I got it started! Now I feel better and I can continue with my upgrades, mods etc. :D

What did I do? The same things as before -
  • topped up battery, did steps as #8, but still no luck.
  • was disappointed but then I still decided to give it some love and care. I replaced the fused aux light bulbs with LED T10. Replaced some missing faring/cowling screws. Did some general dusting.
  • After this, I cranked it one last time and it roared to life! I let it run for a few minutes till the fan came on. Then switched off and started again. It started 3 times after that with no trouble :). Starting is still not smooth (single press), but I can work with that.
Seems like it just needed some TLC from me as a new owner before deciding to cooperate! It does have a personality ;). Thank you everyone for your help and encouragement.
