Hi everyone,

My S10 is not starting after repeated attempts. I bought a used Super Tenere 2012 (80k km) last month. I test drove it 1st, checked basic stuff and rode it home. It was a great ride and the engine was smooth and powerful.

Since then I have been trying to start it and it refuses. The engine turns, I small gas in the exhaust but it does not start. I have tried the following things already:
  • Topped up battery and re-tried. Tried jump-starting with a car battery.
  • Replaced all 4 spark plugs (with new NGK IV Iridium), and replaced air filter.
  • Emptied the tank and tried with 93 octane premium gas.
  • Tried starting without twisting throttle & with plenty of twisting too.
I am at my wits end! Does anyone have any tips or other things to try?

Note: ambient daytime temperature is around 4-6 degrees C here.

Classic hard start scenario, common with many big FI twins - spend some time exploring 'search' before proceeding further.

Caught early, a WOT (wide open throttle) usually clears it, but this sounds like you have flooded the engine thoroughly.

Presumably there are no codes showing on the dash display? Has the wiring harness upgrade been completed?

1. Turn ignition off
2. Press both blacks buttons in the cockpit, turn the ignition on and keep pressing both buttons for 8 seconds (the display will switch to diag mode). Now you can release the buttons.
3. Push booth buttons again for 3 seconds. The display will switch again.
4. Now give full throttle and let the starter turn for 4-5 seconds.
5. Release the throttle and turn the ignition off.
6. Turn the ignition on (display should be in normal mode) and the XT should start without any problems.

Are you waiting for the dash to run through all of the functions before pushing the start button? Some folks have complained that not waiting can cause it to not start.

As a result, yesterday he wound up using the second method. At first, he did not want to start, sneezed and farted, but nothing. As a result, I launched it through DIAG mode. For some reason, it wound up in this mode, without the last two points with the ignition off and starting in normal mode.

Here's a procedure to follow that is supposed to counter the hard start issue. I've never had to use it, but I got the procedure from this forum at some point in the past, and made it a part of my maintenance book.

Also, make sure that you are letting it do its self-diagnosis thing when you turn the key on. Wait until it finishes before you hit start button. If you don't, that aggravates or causes a hard start.

Do you hear the fuel pump start and then stop when it reaches working pressure?
You should always press the Run button, "after" hearing that the fuel pump stops. If you do it before it stops, the injection will be at low pressure, the fuel will enter squirted instead of atomizing it... and this will inevitably generate a situation of bad successive starting attempts
If the cylinders are flooded, they must be dried by removing the injection fuse

Oh wow! Thanks for the helpful replies and tips. I will definitely try each of them.
@Sierra1, @Bill_C , yes I wait till it does it's self-diagnosis.
@Squibb, no idea since I bought it used. Is a wiring harness upgrade required on the 2012 !?
@Ss1, is it as simple as that! :) Will research and try it.

I am no mechanic but I always start with the Suck Squeeze Bang Blow.
Is it getting air? Air filter clear?
Is the fuel good? No clogged fuel filter no loose connections.
Is there oil. Make sure it will turn over.
You put in new plugs, did you reconnect the plug wires (lol, done that one before).
Is the exhaust clear, no vermin crept in after you brought it home?

Look for the simple things first. Sounds like you already have but just wanted to put it out there.

Good luck.

You replaced plugs so you would have unplugged the intake air temperature sensor at the bottom of the air box, correct?
If you didn't get that plugged back in that would cause it not to start and you should have a code on your dash panel, if I remember correctly.

Thats an easy one to check and probably one of the most likely causes, especially if you haven't done it before on this bike.

I put everything back as it was. Plugged the air sensor. Also the rubber hose at the bottom of the intake box. That hose with the stupid clip was very hard to put back :(.

Thanks for the tips. I am going to try some of the things mentioned by the kind members in a day or 2.

My situation with my 12 was a new higher rated cca Yuasa.... These bikes are really weird about minimum cca and cranking. Weirdest bike Ive owned actually. Cranking the old battery seemed fine, but must just drop below the minimum required for everything. It'd crank and act like it was flooded. The new battery 100% resolved the issue and haven't had an issue since. The fact you had to top it off is headed in that direction. It could have a low cell and Ive personally see jump starting not a fix with a dead cell.

I'd also highly suggest putting it on a tender if left more than a few days.

It's on the Russian forum. For some, it did not start after it was launched, they did not let it work for 5 minutes and immediately drowned it out. My motorcycle started without problems.

From my experience. In 75k miles and nine years. I have probably had 4-5 hard starts. Havent had one in 3 years now. They happen at the strangest times. It never left me stranded but it was scary alone in the boondocks with no cell service. Autozone 14s battery got critical. I got an Antigravity jumper after that and Never leave without it. Everybody needs one. If mine doesn't start normally. I whip out the jumper immediately and plug it in and it'll fire up. I've experimented at home with trying to induce a hard start. I can't make mine flooded eniough for it to not start with a cold or warm engine. I've cycled the key 10+ times.. It'll cough and backfire a little but it does start. Twisting the throttle has no effect. FWIW Mine is flashed with a PCV and I run regular 87 gas. Tried premium and the only difference was my wallet go thinner I haven't tried a lithium battery. Heard they seem to help with hard starts. I hate to say it but if you haven't had the 2 wiring recalls. You need to do it. They have been known to do strange things to some Gen1. Good luck.

That hose with the stupid clip was very hard to put back
what procedure did you execute?:
1) did you adjust the filter box and then tried to plug in the hose? or….
2) plugging in the hose was the first thing you did…and then you fitted the filter box to the Throttle body
I ask because using the second method it is easy to attach the hose
