Maybe they are developing a new XT660Z Ténéré for the world market as the old one is now long in the tooth, and so cannot be exported to the US and a number of other countries due to emission regulations? The timing would be about right as the current 660 will be about ten years old by 2017..........................

It took 2 years for the 1200 to make it to North America and there is no 660 available.
I don't think we're in the same time as we were in early 2010.
Look at every single new yamaha, except the MT-03 has made it over the pond.
Even the bonkers FZ-10 is coming as an early delivery.

Yamaha is not stupid. Honda has the AT, and the CT. It would be a good move to bring in a second tenere, and maybe just maybe do a proper re-design on the 1200.

I will be in the market for a replacement for the Tenere in about a year. Not sure if this would fit the bill, or maybe the new AT, or maybe an 1190R... or a new 2017 XT1200 >:D
i would like something a bit lighter, the 5% of the time I do really tricky stuff...other wise for the 95% of the riding that I do with my XT it has not disappointed

Mark, I believe that is still going to be a twin cylinder (FZ07 motor) :)

Anyway, hope to see you in Romney. Bring bandages for me ??? ;D
Good reminder on the bandages my kit is pretty sparse right now plus Patrick is coming ;D

Maybe I should have said the XT700 will be my Dual Sport with 2 cylinders instead of a KLR or DR and just a little heavier if it comes in under 450lbs. Smoother for sections of pavement able to carry camping gear and still explore on. Will it be thumper light? No way but I'll enjoy the compromise.

Looking forward to seeing you and riding also! Gonna be fun!!!

You've hit the nail on the head, the 660's proving difficult to set up so it can pass the next round of Euro reg's apparently. easier just to ditch it for the bigger & friskier MT07 lump. It'll be a cracking bike and if they get the price right it'll be a huge seller.

The XT600 Tenere goes back to 1988 and the basic engine goes back to 1976. Forty years is an incredible run and no wonder they can't get it through current emissions.

The new bike should be a great alternative to the WeeStrom, especially when they put out a non-tube tire version.

MT07 Based Tenere

One of our weekly bike sheets showed this new MT07 based Tenere test mule that's been spotted on the roads in Europe. If this looks to be the ideal replacement for the venerable XT660, might there be an MT09 based Tenere waiting in the wings to supersede the XT12?

Re: MT07 Based Tenere

I think they need to make this a light bike with decent off-road capability, the V-Strom (although a good bike) has little off-road prowess and the Versys absolutely none and both fill the tall-rounder role well, nobody makes a bike that can do distance comfortably and then make a decent fist of things off-road.

The 660 is obviously good, but for riding 1,000 miles to get to decent tracks and trails it does not fit the bill so well, and you only have to look at how people are modifying CB500's to get a good all round bike to see that there is a huge hole in the market....

....still I bet it turns out to be a Yamaha version of the V-Strom / Versys ::)

Re: MT07 Based Tenere

After riding and loving the current fz07 a tenere with an 07 motor could
not be passed up by me. Just because there's one over seas doesn't mean there
will be one here. Like we never got the 660 either. ::005::

I think this is the hole that the Africa Twin is going to fill. The MT-07 would compete here as well, although honestly, I'd take the AT.

Its a shame that not everyone gets access to the Tenere 660.

I'm going to come out of the closet and say I was excited to pick up an AT because I wanted a bike with better off-road prowess, but then I saw it in person at the Austin GP. It looks fairly "budget" and not par with the Tenere, more inline with the NC700. Hopefully the 07 comes state side because it will be about the same build quality as the AT for a good bit less.

Good point, I'll have to check one out once they start appearing in dealer stock here in the states. I didn't see that mentioned in any of the reviews I've read of the bike. I'm excited about it, but I can't justify buying one without selling other bikes so I probably won't be buying one anytime soon.

Aaaww! I was kind of hoping to have at least 6 of the same topic by the end of the week, as it seems no one reads the one's previously posted anyway ::)

I only ask to Yamaha to fit a MT07 engine in my 660. I don't need much more.

less than 200kgs full (with 23 litres)
Good off road suspensions
21" / 18" wheels
... and the 700 twin: 75 HP

Perfect bike to me.
