I still think that that group of middle-weights is large, although choice is nice, not always helpful............... if they stuck a shaft onto it and used the MT-09 engine then they might be onto a winner or at least give the MT-09 Tracer (FJ09) a road version shaft option and cast wheels for those that never go off road ::009::

I do like the shaft on the tenere, but not really sure what the big deal is about a chain drive. The tenere pumpkin weighs a ton.
My FJ does just fine with chain. The shaft would add a lot of weight to a bike that is really quite light, mane gable and plenty fast.

The FJ09 has a low sump, and is simply not suitable for a DP application. The motor is wide, and would have to sit very high in the frame, with a high cog.
Besides, the FJ behaves more like an inline four. A great motor, no doubt, but it doesn't have as much on the bottom as the 270 degree twins.

I've owned an FZ07 for about 2500km before selling it on. In my opinion, it's a far better motor than the tenere. Smoother, and even more luggable. Plenty fast (most wheelie happy bike I've ever ridden-short wheel base does that I guess) and cheap to run. My fuel economy was hovering anywhere from 4-4.3L/100km in the city, riding it like I stole it. My FJ is currently sitting at 5.3L, And the tenere at 6.6L/100km.
The FZ weighed in at just over 400 pounds. If the New Tenere is at 430 or even 450 lb, they will be on to a winner. In the worse case solution, it will still be 120 lb ligther than the tenere,
70 lb lighter than a 1190R, and 60 lb lighter than the AT.

I for one would spend the money on it.

Greg, I have to say, I have seriously looked at the FJ (Tracer in EU) but the chain, although not a big deal, the lubing of it is, every 600 miles or so. I would value your opinion of it compared to the S10, as I may have to change bikes if our situation here changes.......

I'll do a blog post once I hit 5k on the bike. Around 3600km now and counting.

The good on the FJ:
-It's featherweight compared to the ST.
-Fantastic get up and go. The other day, I drag raced a FJR. The guy was in it, but the FJ did better, on one wheel! Honestly, this thing moves.
-Great ergos. I'm 5'9" 165 lb without gear, and the bike fits me very well. I have not moved the bars, but have swapped the stock seat to a seat concepts seat. The stock windscreen sucks, but I'm currently living with it, until MRA comes out with a better replacement. I tried an Ernmax and it still doesn't solve the buffeting. A lower screen would be ideal to put the helmet in clean air.
-Decent on fuel. On the 18L tank, I average 270-300km in the city before having to push.
-I bought the gun metal grey. The bike looks very good IMO.
-LED headlights are a treat. I'm a bit disapointed that yam didn't use both lights for low beam, but having to ride to work daily, it works very well. The high beam is very bright, and has vg spread.
-Brakes are excellent (no name radials) and I don't see having to do an upgrade to stainless, or any of that non sense
-In the city, it feels great. Better than the Tenere. It has presence, but it's not a big bike

The Bad:
-Stock suspension. If you're going to use the bike as intended, the suspension needs work. once again yam has saved the money here. I've gone with a traxxion dynamics drop in cartridges (fully adjustable) and the difference is amazing. At the rear, I've installed a fully adjustable Yacugar shock (2 way comp, rebound, and hyd. preload)-magic. Yes it was $2G US, but I intend to keep the bike for a while. The same rear shock on my tenere lasted 50k before needing a rebuilt that set me back about $300 CDN.
-OEM screen and seat could use work. But are berable. The OEM units on the ST sucked too. Usually the first things I change on a bike.

to sum up:
I've ridden an FJR before. The power is electric, and so smooth, it's scary. That said, the tank is very wide, and the bike is very very heavy. As a long distance blaster, it would be great. But for your back yard, it would be too much (weight and power really). Unless you're two up all the time, covering 600km + per day, the FJR is a waste.
With the chain, the FJ/MT shares the tenere dash. Under my service section, I reset when the oil gets changed, and I reset everytime I lube the chain. Granted, without a center stand, this was a royal PITA with the FZ07 and my 09. With the FJ, I pull into the garage, center stand the bike, and lube. One minute, and I'm good for a 1k. I've adjusted the chain once. The quality of it seems much better than the FZ07. My buddy that bought my 2014 FZ09 is now replacing the chain at 25K.

Don't get me wrong. I love my Tenere. I would be hard pressed to replace it with another bike. It's heavy yes, but if you ride it as intended, the thing is pure magic. I started doing some simple single track near where I live, and if you weigh the bike properly, it will do what it's told.
It's really nice to have choice. If I had to have one road bike, it would be the tenere. I'm lucky though, and can have more than one bike.

I'll be doing my annual California trip at the start of september. The FJ gets the nod this year. It will be 95% pavement, with some occasional fire roads thrown in. I think the bike will do great on the 7k round trip.

I hope this bike comes to the USA as it is what my brother has been waiting for.
I don't see why it wouldn't.
there isn't a single Yamaha model that they held out on, save for the MT-03

I like everything I see. I'd try and shave as much weight as I could passenger pegs and exhaust. I'd buy some soft luggage and ride some rougher stuff than the Big Ten. Those BDR's always entice me. Dogdaze chains are easy to take care of. I always adjust before big trip and clean and lube when I return. They will last a long time if adjusted properly. Most people will run them to tight. If I could add this bike I think I would have the perfect stable for me.
Xt1200=2 up or long haul adv bike
xt700=1up BDR back country camper
Beta Xtrainer= gooner woods single track excitement

Thanks Greg ::008:: I just didn't want to waste my local dealers time arranging a demo, but I think I'll go have a closer look see......

True Grip, I get what you are saying, I've had a V Strom, just feels like going backwards with a chain............... maybe just me.

Re: Yamaha MT-07 Ténéré spied

It's an absolute no brainer for Yamaha that one, the only surprise to me is it's taken so long. There may be some cracking deals on the outgoing 660 Tenere to be had too ::008::

Honestly, I don't think you will be disappointed. Stick it in STD mode, and go.
Europe by bike is on my list. And the FJ is the tool for that, no ifs ands or buts.

It took 2 years for the 1200 to make it to North America and there is no 660 available.

400,000 miles on chain drive motorcycles, and I won't ride another mile on one. Same catagory as carbs, points ignition. Those 3 things are history for me. Hope the motorcyle is successful, but zero interest in any chain drive. I suppose in 1910 or whatever when cars were still chain drive there were guys that loved that and would not switch to modern shaft drive. Well 100yrs has passed. I'll use the chainsaw if a tree falls down, otherwise chain is out of my life,.

Some people won't want it because it will have tubes in the the tires too. Not a big deal to me. I WANT a 21" front wheel and chain because I want to go places I don't want to take the Tenere. Lighter the better! Love the shaft on the Big Ten but we all know it's an "Adv Tourer". Mid Ten will be a smoother dual sport with an extra cylinder. I will own both hopefully!

Mark, I believe that is still going to be a twin cylinder (FZ07 motor) :)

Anyway, hope to see you in Romney. Bring bandages for me ??? ;D
