What is the quietest throaty sounding slip-on muffler available for the S10 today under $600?

Prefer the quiet downward-firing baffle type the most to keep the decal high pitch popping to a minimum. These also tend to have a deeper sound from what I've research so far. I don't know, you tell me :) LeoVince was my first choice but I see these might not be readily available any more. 2nd choice was Arrow slip-on muffler or Yoshimura RS4 with db killer installed. Not much helpful info on the Remus, GPR, MIVV exhausts here in the USA. And, I'm not going to spend up on the Ackra, nice, but just too much $. With the DB killers in, watching some of the poor quality videos on Youtube (hard to tell), it seems like the Arrow and Yoshimura slip-ons are still pretty loud even with the DB killer installed. I'm just looking to get the big factory can off the bike, and a deep sound would be nice. Truly prefer it not to be loud. The Remus slip-on sound nice but it sits up, looks like would melt the rear blinkers.

If I cannot figure it out, I might roll the dice between the Arrow or the Yoshi, would truly prefer the quieter of the two with DB killer installed - if anyone here knows for sure and heard and tried some of these in comparison, it would be most helpful. Thanks.

I realize that this sounds like I'm just a fan of cheap crap, but that is far from the truth. I have the same criteria you do (not hugely expensive, quiet-ish) and I'm going to do a carbon Delkevic jobber. I had the stainless ones on my CBR1100XX for about 30k miles, and they looked exactly like they did the day I bought them the whole time. I had no issues at all with quality of fit, or hardware, etc. and I've owned many high-dollar exhausts to compare it to over time. Look on ebay and do a search for 'super tenere exhaust' and you'll see it. One caveat, I've never had one of their carbon cans, but a) you could specify stainless I'm sure, and b) I have no reason to expect that it would be of different quality than the stainless. Oh, and they were the quietest aftermarket cans I've ever heard.

Apart from that, I'd personally stay away from Leo Vince. I bought a very pricey Ti exhaust for a Ducati I was road racing years back, and was lucky enough to crash the bike on the first weekend I had it installed. I needed a couple of parts and they didn't stock any, plan to stock any, and essentially told me 'tough shit; when I suggested that having to wait 5 weeks for a mid pipe on a $1700 exhaust that I'd just bought for a current model that they'd been selling for 3 years was a little much.

stay well away from GPR, and Two bros.

Staintune was your best bet with baffle in (and light as a feather)-they are no longer offered. I custom made one, but the stock rear turn signals had to be replaced with some smaller ones.

and here it is with baffle out

Arrow is a great pipe. I can't comment on the quietness of it, as I'm running the arrow headers, and they make the bike bark.

THANKS for the replies so far you guys! I read them all and links you included (very helpful). I guess the no-brainer unit with best parts and availability probably is the Arrow unit (I've had them on other euro offroad bikes stock as OEM - nice quality), but I was kind of hoping someone might pop up about the Remus or some other exhaust I had not seen yet. The Remus slip-on is sweet too but I can't get the distributor/mfg to explain if the current unit tucks up properly at the correct in alighnment with the shroud or if it hangs way down like you see in some photos to clear blinker melting, very strange how they won't respond once I started asking questions. There are few members with the Remus, kinda reminds me of the Akra for less money. Hard to believe that Delkavik goes for so cheap, sounds nice too - sort of like a Leo sound too. I did read last night someone indicting that Leo went bankrupt and some group in the USA may have taken them over but I need a place I can get parts, packing, fast.

Not too many on this site praising the Yoshi that much, is it too loud ??? I'm very familiar with Yoshi high quality on other bikes/pipes, but it seems like it might be louder than Arrow even with the DB killer in. Seen a few get taken off and resold. Probably too loud, I don't know. Looks like the latest version of the Arrow points more downward, all the videos I've seen with the Arrow unit, people remove the DB killer and sit there and rev the piss-ant out of it from 2 feet away so I can't really tell on video if it's quiet or not from say 15 feet away with DB killer in.

So far I'm still hanging between the Arrow and Yoshi slip-on if I cannot find anything else. Wish that Arrow did not stick out so far with that weird tab mount on the side, I guess that's for a shield or grommet to go between the side cover, I don't know.

I just installed the Yosh myself and its DEFINATELY not too loud. It seems they sell 2 pipes... .one where the baffle can be removed and one (the one I bought) where its the exact same pipe but is 50 state legal and they have put a weld on the baffle bolt.

Its a very nice pipe, super easy install. I would say its almost as quiet as stock at idle but comes to life a bit more under throttle, but by no means in any sort of obnoxious harley way. I was actually dissappointed I couldn't pull the baffle out just to try it so I may have pull out the dremal to cut the weld off the bolt.

I by no means want anything loud, so I will most likely just leave the baffle in when its all said and done. Mine was $405 I think from Revzilla. I have no idea where you buy the pipe without the weld on the baffle bolt.... maybe its not sold anymore.

I emailed Yoshimura recently about the removable end cap. They said they only make one Rs-4 for the Super Tenere now. And the baffle is welded. For EPA reasons he said.

I figured.... it appears it could be easily cut... and I think another member had told me had done so with no problems.

So is 2 brothers too loud? I don't understand the beef there. I was told they were subdued.

I have the Arrow full exhaust, but the muffler would be the same is you keep the stock headpipe. I think the Arrow is a bit loud with the DB killer removed, and loses power compared to stock muffler with it installed. I've got about 20k miles on my exhaust, maybe it has gotten louder over time, I've never tried repacking yet.

Best quality videos I could find to give an idea of the sound for Yoshimura and Arrow. The fluttering/reversion sound on decel is a bit odd on the arrow. Perhaps the recording is not very good quality. The dual strap mounting looks a bit more robust on the Arrow. Gives an idea on sound for both if you have good speakers and sub on your home computer you can actually hear a difference on these. My top-2 so far. I do like the looks of the Yoshi too. I'd pick the quieter one between the two if I knew for sure.
if you like loud, the Yoshi sounds mean in this video without the baffle installed. Gotta save my ears on longer trips though.

talonboy,

Really? Please reconfirm If I am misunderstanding... are you saying the Arrow slip-on muffler with DB killer installed is reduced power / offering LESS performance as compared to the factory Yamaha stock muffler?

I have the Arrow with the db killer removed. I haven't noticed any loss of power. It's been a year since I installed it but my recollection is that it improved performance over the stock muffler a decent amount. At least that's how it felt/feels to me. It also reduced the engine braking.

Above 5000rpm it's loud.

Read back, the issue (if confirmed) is a reported loss of power WITH the db killer installed as compared to the stock muffler. I have no interest in spending just under $480 to save 7lbs and lose power too, if this is true. Need to see data to believe its a loss.
Update: just found this Feb 2015 thread on these topics, a few of the posts and links indicate only a 2HP gain with slip-on only based on a Arrow dyno chart data provided. Seems to be 50/50, some say the Arrow gets loud even with baffle installed.

Other thread on YST forum: http://www.yamahasupertenere.com/index.php?topic=14649.0
