When I spoke to Yamaha customer care today I was told production won't begin until April.

After this bike I can say that I probably won't go for a PDP again. Not because I'm mad, or feel I made a mistake, or feel misled. My personality is just not suited to making a big ticket purchase with an open ended, uncertain expectation of when I might receive said item. That said, I'm going to stick with it because I really want this bike. Nevertheless, I think Yamaha could have been more forthcoming, by providing dealers with a general timeline of deliveries, based on when a customer's order is placed.

Others may say that this isn't possible or site past examples from prior PDP programs as a rationale for why one shouldn't be surprised about late delivery schedules. That level of resolve, confidence in your decision and patience is probably not suited to everyone. My wife, for example, thinks I'm a bit of a nutter for having driven 5 hours to see the bike for 30 minutes, only to turn around and drive another 5 to get home. Similarly, she probably thought I was even crazier to put $500 down on, what is essentially ether, with an open ended promise that the bike will show up eventually. I told her that the guys on this forum (great as you all are ;)) whipped me into a frenzy and made me do it.

Many of you may remember in my intro that I'm a returning rider after 12, or so, years away. As such, one of the biggest questions I had to ask myself was, "why do you wan't to do this after so many years?" I answered that question to my satisfaction and moved to the next obstacle. Cleared that one and moved to the next one and so on.... The last hurdle was, could I pull the trigger on the PDP for the Tenere? Somewhat by happenstance, upon joining this forum and making my deposit, I found myself amongst a group of folks with with a level of passion for riding that is beyond my limited scope to appreciate...yet. The Tenere (can't call it S10, sorry) is my entree into that world, and though the delivery date issue is a setback for me, I'm sticking to my decision.

Sorry if this is too much information. :)

If you go take a look at the first thread on ADVrider about the Super Tenere, it was not even coming to USA. They wanted people to petition Yamaha so they would consider bringing it here. Geeze, never figured they would, now it is coming and a whole bunch of people are still not happy and it has not even arrived!

Make other plans if you want to go on that trip, make a cutoff date that you will not wait any longer, go get another bike. Tell your dealer you wish to get out of the order and please give your $500 back. If unable, try and secure someone else to take your order, should be no problem really after we start getting the bikes here and get to show it off all over the place as we ride.

No big deal really unless you just have to make that big trip with the S10, if that is the case, nothing can be done but wait.

P.S. There are people out there that still want the 660 to come here also, but it is not.

I can see where those of you that have a bike to ride are not upset. It is very easy to so tolerant when your plans have not been screwed up. I had several rides in March and April and May. I knew going in that those were not going to happen However a possible ride to Alaska in June is out and a ride to Colorado in Sept is not looking good. So yes I am not being very tolerant of Yamaha's not caring when they get the orders out.

I really think this has to do with not making the production run, until all orders have been taken, up to the end of march.
Had they been more up front with that, I would have waited until next year.
I received a call from my dealer, and he is doing all that he can do, but I don't think that Yamaha will change there dates.

I also think that if everyone that has ordered, were to cancel their order, Yamaha would have the bikes at the dealers by May.
That's not going to happen and they know that. This is just my opinion and your mileage may vary..

I agree completely. If it's going to be August (I ordered mine middle of October) I would cancel mine, if I can get the deposit back and wait a year. I have too many rides planned to wait.

I'm so very glad I didn't sell my bike three weeks ago to drop this deposit. I would have gone the summer bikeless...not an option. Would also have had to buy something else to fill the gap...probably not an option either (it sucks being poor!).

I'll get one next year, no problemo.

Yamaha changed the ST website again. Just looked at delivery dates on there and there is none mentioned there anymore.
"Delivery begins May 2011" is unchanged on the "Specs" tab of the Super Tenere web page. Nothing has changed recently. This has already been discussed in this or other threads.

It is absolutely amazing to me how this thread is almost a carbon copy of previous FJR PDP threads on other forums. This program is not for everyone.

Personally this late delivery has created a big problem for me. When I ordered the bike in November I talked my son and 2 other friends into buying adventure bikes and taking a trip to Alaska (the first time to Alaska for all of us). We all have the vacation time scheduled and are leaving at the end of July. I can't back out now after all the planning we have done and talking my friends into going, but it sounds like I may not have a bike to ride. All this maybe July, maybe August stuff is for the birds.

Hey Graham TMI = too much info. :)

As for the delay on getting the bike. I am a little upset that it will another 3 months coz I sold my bike figuring I will have a new one for the riding season and now it wont get here till near halfway through the season. I had rides and getaways all planned out so they all will change to next year now. I will still wait patiently till it gets here. I am sure it is going to be well worth the wait. In the mean time I will look for a cheap bike to pass the time with. My dealer gave me a deal on a new 09' FZ6, that could be a fun little play bike.

I just can't understand all talk about Yamaha being liars and only doing things in their own best interest. The fact that they are importing a bike that most of us thought we'd never see in the US is a good thing. Over 6 months ago they made their best estimate they could start delivering in May. So if they deliver one bike on May 31st they've met their best guess from 9 months earlier. Even if the first delivered bike is 4 weeks later does that make them horrible business people? Would it really have made a difference to your order if they said bike to begin delivery late spring/early summer 2011?

As for people selling their bikes at the end of a riding season, or during the winter to get money for the next bike...I'll admit I'm a little confused by the timing of that one as well. But to each their own.

I called and they were very good about it. They said it does make a difference to Yamaha Japan when they get many concerns from customers.
They will connect you to a Product Specialist after taking some information. They knew I had one on order after taking down my address and name.
I told them it looked like some guys were jumping ship and going with another manufacturer due to some having big trips planned and others just upset about it. I also told them I felt sorry for all the dealers and reps getting all the phone calls from concerned customers. They do not need this after the last two years of just hanging on.

Give them a call

I can understand that people got annoyed when an estimate was taken as a guarantee but from this side of the pond it looks like this..

1) You were pissed that you didn't get it. YAMAHA listened and decided to send it your way and go through 50 different state emission and compliance issues or whatever it is over there.

2) You got a huge discount on other markets (probably so low that YAMAHA don't want to risk unsold stock issues or are setting up manufacturing in China) (that's 7000 more reasons to be happier than Australians and 2500 more than Canadians)

3) It's a good thing. I am coming from the perspective of hoping that the bike I just bought will be with me a while, but I understand that not everyone likes to hold onto bikes for long.

4)The US has VERY low ADV sales at the moment. Hopefully it will be the next big thing but again it's a risk. This board is not representative of the general market.

5)This bike will cope with snow better than many.

6) You have a great Forum that popped up as a result.

Don't loose sight of the big picture. July last year it wasn't happening. July this year, they will be there.

Cheers

Not trying to stir this pot anymore than it already is. I have accepted it for the most part as of today that my bike won't be here until July. Sucks because I just spent a hour canceling a two week trip out west scheduled for middle of August due to this setback.

I did go on Yamaha's facebook page (my dealer encouraged me to do this) and voice my opinion and here is the reply I received just minutes ago.

Roy, there is no delay at this time. Order timing is still valid and those that ordered first are still first in line. Hang in there!

No mention of May :'(

Oh well I am over half way there ;D

This is all sounding a bit stressful - if the delivery schedule does not meet your needs, pull out of the deal. For a lot of us it would not be the first $500 we have spent for little or nothing. I can remember dropping $500 on a weekend and got nothing but a hangover for my hard earned money. There are a lot of nice motorcycles out there just looking for buyers.

Venture you are too perceptive, or you were hanging around my past somewhere. I did notice some lipstick rings and I saw a couple of little folded pieces of paper - kind of looked like really little envelopes... must have had a good time anyway. O:)
