I'm planning to go. NW suburbs. Possible I could go through Iowa to breakup the ride. Would you plan to ride straight out via 90 in one day?I just saw this, I'm tempted to come. Anyone plan on riding from around Chicago?
Yep, I didn't exactly drop my bike, but when it needed to get back up on its wheels there was Checkswrecks and BigBob to help me get it right. These events are full of good and very helpful people.@gunslinger_006
And if you drop your bike, there's no shame in it, you'll have understanding folks there to help you pick it up and get you going again.
I used to keep a count of my drops, but I've kinda lost count over the years. I do remember the lesson learned from each one and rarely repeat the same mistake. (Almost always at 0 mph.) The funniest this year was stopping to take a picture, just sitting on the bike, turned somewhat sideways, no kickstand down. Weather was starting to turn and a gust of wind caught me by surprise and blew me over. I do tend to remember the solo pickups.@gunslinger_006

And Patrick and others picked my bike up at the Arkansas rally!Yep, I didn't exactly drop my bike, but when it needed to get back up on its wheels there was Checkswrecks and BigBob to help me get it right. These events are full of good and very helpful people.
First time I ever met Mak10, he found me at Muley Point, Utah, with my bike taking a dirt nap, and had to help me get her back on her feet. And he STILL rode with me for 5 more days! And I dropped it at least 2 more times.Yep, I didn't exactly drop my bike, but when it needed to get back up on its wheels there was Checkswrecks and BigBob to help me get it right. Good ice cream and then the lady backed into your bike. She was more distraught than any of us.Yep, I didn't exactly drop my bike, but when it needed to get back up on its wheels there was Checkswrecks and BigBob to help me get it right. These events are full of good and very helpful people.
Depending on your starting point, I would take hwy 20 across IA through NE and come into Custer from the south. From Des Moines, it is a really big day ride. If the wind is blowing like it usually is across NE or SD, and the temps it will wear your out. We usually stay in the 400 - 500 mile range per day when travelling distances.I'm planning to go. I do have a cabin reserved. GV550 was planning to share, but unlikely to get released by Canada by then.

For anyone that has never done it that ride across NE on 20 is through The Sand Hills. Desolate, pretty and smooth road. The best part? Hardly any trucks or corn fields!Depending on your starting point, I would take hwy 20 across IA through NE and come into Custer from the south. From Des Moines, it is a really big day ride. So do I.I remember that story
I think that was the dusty day and late in the day. Riding last I think I could breathe through my nose right after that stop. And somehow the next day I was missing a mirror!Poor old woman had to be terrified looking at the 'straight out of central casting' badass bikers of BigBob, Checks, and me. I was glad the damage was minimal and I could send her on her way. Let's face it, it's bad karma to beat up a 90 year old women.
Bourbon is gone but found the mirror! But had a tire in the garage and now it is missing. On the bike you are riding now?You know what they say...lose a mirror, gain some burbon.
Nope, that tire stayed with the Tenere. They were meant to be together. I'm down to 90/10 tires now.. On the bike you are riding now?
Amen to that Jaxon.I’ll be doing my normal - throwing on another set of Shinko 804-805 and coming up. I love off road and will be seeking it out. I get all the pavement I ever want in Texas. When it comes to difficulty, it’s more fun to me riding with fellow riders, and doing what they might want to ride or experience. Ive ridden many times on really crazy trails / roads and other ridiculous ‘trails’ on the Tenere all over the country. Typically my friends will wait at a trail head if I want to go blast a crazy trail for a few minutes. Lol
As far a falling. In these groups we are all around to help each other. Don’t be afraid to do something new and go try an easy dirt road if your not typically comfortable. You might really enjoy it. Everyone is around to help.
I’ve always remembered this from a friend that has ‘lived’, he is a great friend and is currently about 90 yrs old. He and I where once talking ‘shop talk’. I don’t remember what prompted what he said to me but it has always stuck in my head- “ do what you really want to do, go out and try new things, this is not a dress rehearsal for the next time around “
I think of him when I say that quote, and always try and do the same. It has served me very well.
