I will be attending the rally from South Carolina. I will be towing a small Casita Travel Trailer and have a bike in the back of the Toyota Tundra. I have a Tenere and a Kawasaki Z900RS. The Z900RS is lighter and easier to load so I am thinkin about taking the Z900RS instead of the Tenere. Will I be shunned by the cool kids if I am on the Z900RS. Will there be rides good for a street only bike?

Yes there is some really cool roads for street bikes. I was just down there last fall on my Ducati 950 SP Hypermotard last fall and had a lot of fun tearing up Iron Mountain Road and Needles Hwy, Nemo Rd, Spearfish canyon road, and others. Other ideas are to ride around the Badlands national park or day trip out to see Devils Tower. I should have some suggested dirt & gravel routes and road route suggestions out by July 1st. You come from my idea riders paradise so you're likely be a little jaded but you should find enough to keep you busy for a few days riding.

I live near the South Carolina Coast but it is only about 300 miles to good NC, TN, GA, and WV mountain roads. I have yet to exhaust all of the "good" roads. After the rally in Custer I plan to spend at least 2-4 more weeks around WY and CO. I figure I can get good ride suggestions for areas to ride that weekend. I would rather take the Tenere but the Z900RS is easier to tote across the country in the back of the Tundra.

I am planning on doing paved + gravel and easy dirt. Mostly thats a factor of being on battlewings. I dont want to change to 50/50 tires this season since ill be doing 1000mi each way just to get to custer.

New to this group but not that area of the hills. Found some great riding west of Custer last fall.
Called Crazy Horse this morning and reserved a spot for the toyhauler.
Will bring the S10 and maybe the T7.
Looking forward to meeting and riding with this group.
Be warned Wacked is dangerous to ride with.....

Mark - you've mislabeled me as "dangerous" ever since Eric wiped out and his leg went flying 15' thru the air . I know this traumatized some of the group, but in full disclosure Eric flicked his prosthetic leg up for dramatic effect......

Otherwise, I think I've mostly brought people back in one piece

That leg flying was my shot at immortality and I didn’t have my GoPro on. Go figure.
I will agree most come back in one piece, just some pieces don’t function as well as they did at one time.
Looking forward to riding with you this summer so take your best shot.
Hope your getting some seat time on the T7 on these nice days.
Anyway we will be haying during this rally so Bonnie may not be with me as she thinks she needs to rake for the hay crew if it’s dry.
If she comes she’s thinking she’ll ride the T7. I’m thinking I could do a gravel road easy 2 track one day west of Custer to Wyoming and back around by Flag Mountain and maybe Silver City. Just a idea.

If you head to Black Hills National Forest there are enough dirt roads from mild to wild that will keep you entertained the whole time there. When I passed through on my Ninja I was bummed not being able to ride them.

Thank you - I will be heading toward the “off-road” !

Ya, I think a guy could spend a couple weeks checking out all the trails in the Black Hills Trail system and then when you throw in all the gravel roads and a fair amount of twisty asphalt on top of it, I think you could spend a month there and not get board. It's not Colorado or Moab for extreme off road riding but its a fun place to ride and there should be plenty to challenge someone's ability on a big bike.

I'll be away from home till St. Patrick's day riding my FJR through LA, AL, GA, MS, SC and FL so please excuse me if I'm a little slow responding to questions for the next couple weeks. When I return I'll get back to work seeing who's interested in a Black Hills Tenere Rally t-shirt. Gunner has volunteered to help with art work ( OK, I admit he did it all ) and I think gunner has put together some great graphics for rally t-shirts and stickers for this rally.

I've also contacted a few catering venders in Custer about providing breakfast sandwiches or Breakfast burritos for Friday and Saturday mornings and a BBQ place to provide a Saturday evening out door picnics banquet. When I return I'll see how much interest there is in providing food at the campground for these three time frames. I stole the idea from Wacked who assembled our last Dakota Dual Sport Rally. Wacked and his wife felt that having a meal available gave people more reason to gather around offering more opportunities to socialize and meet others. I thought it was a great idea so I stole it to see if it worked here also.

Are you going to the races in Daytona? I'm headed out next week for the Flat Track race and the 200. I miss the old days when the Daytona 200 was a premier Superbike race.
