Wow, lots of feedback on the Mitas'. I'll throw out my final 2 cents (probably)...

"The less powerful, lighter bike is getting less tire life?"
I thought they justified it by saying the traction control on the big Tenere helped tire life? Regardless, you are correct, that's tough to believe.

"33 PSI"
Doesn't concern me. Partly because I weigh under 150 fully geared up, but mostly because I trust tire manufacture's recommendation. If they say they work best at 33, I'll run them at 33. If they were to say 80, I'd run that too. I dropped my pressure to 25 for a bit of trail riding a couple weeks ago (normally been running 35-40) and was still able to drag pegs once I made it back to pavement. Oh, and I expect to see 11,000 miles out of the OEM tires, so I don't think I did too bad in that regard either.

"Dakar"
The rear Dakar is only $10 more than the regular, so I would absolutely get that rear, the front is drastically more expensive, so I was going to go with the regular E-07 front.

AAaaaalllllllll that being said, if I'm going to get 2,000 - 4,000 more miles out of a K60, then that's the more appropriate tire to fill my needs. Waiting to here back from the Mitas dealer (I asked if they'd be willing to discount the Dakars since the regular E-07's are backordered), and once I get word back (I expect no), then I'll be ordering the K60's.

Agree with Chris in that I've got more miles and more tread on my K60.

Maybe Eric's just doing his Valentino Rossi improvs.
:D

Jaxon -

You bet! I've been meaning to take a picture for a while, but life keeps getting in the way. :) I'll try to get something posted on this thread in the next couple days.

Wow. I get about 12k from the K60s, but I do ride at 75-85 on the slab here and UT/NV roads are coarse with a fair amount of chip seal. No to mention heat, (saw 109F on the last ride, and it was actually verified by the SOs BMW temp and bank thermometers). I got really good tire life in OR with the wet and cool, smooth roads there.

I'm pretty happy with the K60s performance. An Aussie was mentioning in another thread how at 45,000kms, he had gone through 12 sets of tires in two years and spent $4800 Aus on tires so far on his S10. ??? He rides mostly dirt and obviously softer tires, but holy cow, I don't have that kind of tire money!

Looks pretty bad to me because it's so flat and will handle like crap. There's no better feeling on a bike than when you put on new, round tires, and the bike starts to lean properly again. To me, handling, safety and flat-resistance is more important than squeezing out another 50% miles.

Yea, that dude is an ALL KNOBBY kinda guy!
Kinda makes the "S10 is not good in the dirt" crowd look silly.

I gotta admit I would like to re-ride some of the Australian Alpine dirt roads on full knobby. Most fun I have had on ANY bike in years.

Have you tried a K60? I know it's double the price, but if it lasts twice as long, isn't that worth it in and of itself for the less down time? I don't think I've ever seen a 705 report over 5k miles, but I have seen K60's report over 20k (eagerly awaiting pictures, because THAT is awesome).

Just home from Alaska and Whitehorse, Yukon rally, 10,006 miles. Started with new K60 rear and Anakee II with about 3,000+ miles on front.

Rear looks like it could go several more thousand, front not so much.

Yeah, I'm (edit:) NOT going with an Anakee II again, the OEM Tourance EXP did lots better. Maybe it was all those hard stops from 110kph to get bear/elk/caribou/moose pictures. ::025::

Pulled them both this morning and put K60 rear on from last summer with only 3500 miles, and new K60 front. Wife and I are headed to Salida BMW Sport Touring Unrally in Salida, Co. 2 weeks. Also another oil change, just had it changed 6000 miles ago in Whitehorse. :)

Down time doesn't bother Me i have a tire machine. :)
I guess the trade off for a sticky tire is mileage.
Dirt and street performance is good with the 705r

Salida - great area to base out of. Be sure to go up 50 to Salida from Canon City - absolutely fan freaking tastic on a weekday with no traffic. Also you should do Skyline Drive right outside of Canon City - very cool 2 mile road (rally, its only abou that long and right off of 50) - goes along the spine of a ridge - almost spooky the first time you do it - everyone I've taken it on does it 2x.

Get yourself a copy of the Butler Map of CO - worth every penny.

I will check them out, thanks. Hopefully the fires are out, we can put some money in the economy in the area.

I ride ONLY tarmac and I bet 99% of all adventure bike miles are on tarmac, despite what owners like to believe. I bought the XT1200Z for a wide range of reasons, many of them a product of its dual purpose role but with no intention of going off-road. Fitted with Conti Road-Attack IIs, the whole bike performs much like my previous Ducati Multistrada without the steroids. The grip from these road tyres, although narrower than the norm for road use, is very acceptable and I can readily reach the edge of the tread with no ill effects. I'm not sure about trying that with semi-knobblies but that may be just lack of experience with such tyres. How long a 150 section rear is going to last two up and luggage remains to be seen!

I used several sets of 009 ravens on my Sv1000S sport bike I had before my ST and had no issues with them at all and was happy with the performance and tire life, especially for the price. On the SV I could regularly get 6K plus out of a rear and 2-5K with other brands. That's why I went for a set of 705 radials for the Tenere, I got a front and rear set shipped to my door for 150$. I also have a set of K60 scouts in the shed, which will go on in a couple of months when the 705"s are toast, I am not expecting more that 5k out of the rear. My next couple of big rides are going to be primarily street, along with a 70 mile daily round trip commute to work so the Shinko's went on first before the the K60's. I only have about 500 miles so far on the 705's so far and am happy with them, a lot better in the dirt than the stock Bridgestones, which lasted about 7500 miles for me. You can feel the vibes and hear the noise from the larger and deeper tread blocks on the street with them. One thing nice is that they don't track and wander on the milled and rain grooved concrete freeways like the stockers did.
