I'm up in the blue Ridge today.. I've seen 4 Teneres and a mess of white tigers.

Reliability, plan and simple. I have a pile of bikes to ride so I am only at 16K miles on my bike. So far for maintenance it is had oil changes, tires and recently a set of rear brake pads.

I have rented BMW's several times in Europe and quickly came to the conclusion that BMW's are nice bikes to rent but I wouldn't want to own one.

Now that is perhaps the best evaluation of a BMW motorcycle I have ever heard, and most certainly the best synopsis of my own feelings toward the brand, too... And I've owned two of 'em! :D

Sums up most Harley-D's quite well, too! (and I own an XR1200) ;D

Outstanding, Simmons1! Well done! ::008::

Chris, you are dedicated, keep it up.
I have to ask about your valves. How were they so far? The inital was at 24 miles correct? and then every 24 miles.
did you get them checked every time, in spec out of spec?

thanks in advance,
Greg
Greg,

Valves were checked and fine at 26 and 52k, though at 52k one exhaust valve was .001" off spec - essentially unadjustable from what I was told. All needed adjustment at 75k, though this may have been due to a running issue which I was experiencing at the time.

Best,

Chris

Just borrowed a GSA and we're looking forward to renting a 1200RT to ride in Sweden and Norway next month.
Beemers are like Appleby restaurants, in that you know what you are getting.

But to own one?

No thanks!
Same price or not.

Yep. When someone hears I love bikes and have a lot, they often ask "do you have any Harleys?"
I simply tell them "no. You don't buy Harleys. You rent them. If Harley wanted me to pay $25,000 for a bike, they shouldn't rent me one for a few bucks on a weekend"

I guess the same thing is true for Beemers?

Slamming other brands just makes Tenere owners look insecure about their bargain bikes. Ride what you like. ::003::

I tend to agree with you.
But it's kinda funny since the brand that usually gets "slammed" around here is the stereotype poster boy for slamming ANY other brand.

Also, I don't think all the negative posts should be categorized as slamming. Any comparison thread would be expected to have critical comments. Wouldn't be much help to someone researching if they couldn't find a single mention of the facts. Tenere negatives, included.

BMW's just have more negative facts documented. That's not a slam. Right?

Oh, PUH-Leeze!!! :-\

I own a Ducati and a Harley XR1200 along with the Super Tenere, (not to mention a vintage Norton and a bunch of vintage CZ's), and what do you think was the "bargain" of the bunch, price-wise?

The Harley!

I figure since I actually own a Harley, and have owned more than one BMW, I can do a bit of "slamming" of 'em if I get a giggle out of it. :D

Geez... ::)

Kind of like women.

Oops, I didn't say that did I?

-I loved the vibe and handling of the GS/GSA but she's a high dollar unreliable companion - there's being late and then theres just not showing up at all.
-Tiger 800XC was a bit like a sewing machine - high strung.
-Still have my Vstrom 650 but she's my backup bike - I can call her up any time and take her for a morning ride :)
-Tiger 1200 .... was not available.
-KTM ... as has been said she's a dirty fun girl but who wants to pump their own fuel?
-The Italian? She's hot but doesn't actually like it rough.

All joking aside I could have picked any of the bikes on the list but the S10 just felt great. As has been said, reliable (and I've had the dreaded but solvable hard start that Dallara will tell you *supposedly* exists :) ).

So far:

I've replaced the windshield and added a mad-stad (actually the PO did this but I played around and went with his setup) - this is really personal stuff.

I added a fuse block and KTM heated grips ::013:: -- OH HELL YES!!!

I modded the seat ($5 to level it). This was money well spent. Perfect, no, but bang for the buck can not be beat! This should be the first thing you try if the seat bugs you. Seats are personal on every bike but this is so cheap and easy you should try it first before dropping hundreds if the seat is not to your liking.

Added an Arrow slip-on exhaust ::013:: This was just for fun - I picked it up used & cheap. It's just loud enough to sound fun but not obnoxious - not sure I'd do Deadhorse and back with the extra drone but day to day I like it.

And ... the $0.05 clutch jumper mod. I waited to do this since I was coming off of the Vstrom 650 and wanted to get used to the ooomph of the 1200 but once I did I was like Holy $h1T Batman!!! It really opened the bike up. I may still flash the ECU but this was such a great little mod they should make every reviewer go back and re-test the bike with this alone vs. the GS/A. There's a whole hidden bike in the S10 when you do this mod.

My only gripes:

The hard start issue. Read up on the big thread and know how to do the WOT and as a last resort the fuse pull if htis hits you (and it probably won't). Yes Dallara, I know, it hasn't happened to you so it's not real ::002::

The clearance and the sump - if you go off pavement get a real skid plate that attatches to the frame and has some beef to protect the sump. Otherwise anything will probably be OK. The clearance is a tad low but no big deal if you protect the sump.

Weight. Not making comparisons to the others but she's just a big bike. In this class they all are. I'd love it if she'd drop 75lbs but that would be a tall order. I guess maybe if she was 1k but she's 1200 so you deal.

great bike, jump in, the water is great!

No prob with comments that actual reflect personal experience as opposed to simply repeating generalizations.

Rarely see the BMW riders slamming other brands, they're too wrapped up in their own sense of superiority. :D See it a lot on the Harley forums though....

I've had AMF Harleys that were more reliable than the 06' R1200GS that I owned. I love anything with a motor and wheels or wings on it, but BMW deserves a special place in hell after what that GS put me through. ;)

LOL, another satisfied owner.

Bottom line is: It's your money, and time. If you're having fun, who the hell cares what you ride.
That said. I'm off on a 3000km trip, in the back country on gravel. I trust my Tenere, not 100% sure if I would trust the BM. That's why I never bought one

Ha-Ha!!! Guess you've never spent much time on BMW forums, or on the Beemer threads on ADVrider!!!

I used to frequent a Beemer Oilhead forum where they threatened to ban me because I posted about a Honda! And a vintage one at that... There was more brand bashing there than any forum I've ever logged into. Didn't matter what brand it was, if it wasn't a BMW then it was fair game. And heaven forbid you say something untoward about BMW!!! I will agree that they were extremely proud of their air of superiority, though... :D

OTOH, one of the most open minded and gregarious of other brands forums I have ever been on is the dedicated Harley XR1200 board. Almost all those guys own other brand bikes, and they love damn near everything with two-wheels.

As for having "personal experience" with BMW's... I had about all I could stand with just owning two of 'em!

Just out of curiosity, how many BMW's, or Harley's, have you owned, Twinrider?

Re: Apples to apples.. Why did you choose a Tenere over a GS?

Well from another perspective, I used to frequent the bmwsporttouring forum since I've owned several, including the most recent cam head R1200RT. Those are a bunch of well-mannered folks and most of the discussions revolved around the issues with the various generations of BMW bikes. Very little brand bashing at all, in fact many of the guys moved to FJR's out of frustration with the 2nd gen K bikes in 2006/2007, and it was clearly a very well-respected machine.

Quite frankly the most brand bashing I've ever seen has been on this forum, to the extent that it does seem like there's an inferiority complex or something. Sorry, but that's just the impression I get when it is so constant, and pervasive in so many threads.

8 BMW motorcycles have passed through my whorish motorcycle hands. The last two were both bought back in under one year through the state's lemon law. I will never own another one.
