Apples to apples.. Why did you choose a Tenere over a GS?

This forum is the worst at brand bashing? Really?

I admit that one Brand gets bashed about for the most obvious of reasons. But MOST of the "bashing" has been earned by folks that actually experienced that brand.
Other than that one brand, this is a very tolerant group, in my opinion. Although I will admit that this specific bike has garnered some intense loyalty in a short amount of time.
That might appear to be an inferiority complex, but for me it seems just the opposite. You are NOT sticking your neck out, or pretending, when you claim the Tenere is an awesome and reliable bike.
No reason to squirm about it one bit.

Me personally? You don't have to search my posts very long to find out how I feel about the GS or GSA. I HONOR them. I even give them credit for the Tenere to even exist!
My only real complaint has been that I WANT a GSA and it miffs me that BMW will not fix what keeps it from being the best (reliable included) RTW Big Adv bike in the world.
There rally is no legitimate reason for it to have the warts it has. Just stubbornness, is all I can figure.

Now that might be "bashing" to you. But I sure don't mean it to be. I'm sincere as I can be. I WANT one. Bad.

Never had a BWM of any type. Long before this board was even created I ruled them out due to the reputation for unreliability. Guess all the other boards I visited were also frequented by a bunch of inferiority complex riders, too. Interesting how that keeps happening.

Too bad BMW refuses to make their bikes reliable. They have some products I'd really be interested in owning if I trusted them. I don't, so I won't.

That's not bashing. That's the market speaking. But they don't appear to be listening. Much like Harley, they have brand loyalist willing to accept whatever the company produces, and will happily buy it. Good for them, doesn't impact me one way or the other.

I've had AMF Harleys that were more reliable than the 06' R1200GS that I owned. I love anything with a motor and wheels or wings on it, but BMW deserves a special place in hell after what that GS put me through. ;)
Damn, must've been built on a Monday or Friday... A friend owned an '06, sold it at 60,000 km with no issues. He's had pretty good luck with BMWs, enough that he didn't hesitate to get the new WC.

Just out of curiosity, how many BMW's, or Harley's, have you owned, Twinrider?
Two Harleys, an '00 FXST that I put about 6,000 miles on -- nice bike but not suited to the kind of touring I did -- and an '09 RK, which I've put 40,000 miles on, mostly two-up touring. No major issues with the RK except needing a new clutch, probably related to the big bore SE 103 kit I installed.

Usually visited HDforums for info, some good folks but lots of close-minded "metric" slamming and atrocious grammar/spelling.... :D

Five beemers in total
'72 R75/5 I owned for a few months 30 years ago.
'87 K75C, bargain buy, ridden for a few months .
'96 R1100RT, rode for a couple years/20,000 miles.
'99 R1100GS, rode for 3 years/30,000 miles.
'05 F650GS, rode for a couple years/12,000 miles
'06 F650GS Dakar, still own it/13,000 miles

Only owned the RT and GSs for long enough to comment on reliability. Had to replace the hall sensors on both the 1100GS and the RT, otherwise problem free.
No issues with the '05 F650.
Had to replace the radiator and radiator fan on the Dakar, otherwise no issues.

Haven't spent time on the BMW forums other than the Chaingang for the 650s. Advrider worked well for info on the 1100s.

I was moderating a Kwak forum when I bought my GS, as soon as I annonced the BMW purchase i was inandated with warnings from folks who had came from the K12's and K13;s to Kawasaki due to a huge list of issues, then I had a load of issues, the BMW forums are awash with issues.

Lovely bikes in so many ways, but I would never touch one with a bargepole again, not that I have anything against anyone who does ride one - I know the joy they get from them (and the pain )

I came to the S10 from a BMW K1200s bike. While I never had a major failure, I did have enough stuff go wrong to recoup the costs of my extended warranty. The main recurring problem was the fuel strip on that bike. I had decided I would be on a new bike before the extended warranty was up. For me it was an easy choice, one brand that has a reputation for little to no issues and the other with a reputation for having issues. I know that I made the right choice for me. I just enjoy the ride without the worry in the back of my mind. I know others might feel different. Ride what you want to ride.

I'll give my story since I assume there will be people in the same boat I was.

I used to ride my Dad's '98 GS1100. Great bike, had over 250,000 miles on it. Was starting to die though.
And since he took it back I needed something to replace it.

About a year ago, found a great deal on a 2002 V-Strom. Great bike, had a rattle I didnt really like and my heart was on a GS.
Sold it last fall and set my search for the perfect GS.

Looked at newer VStroms and the Tenere, but I was sold on a GS.

Now, I know I am not like everyone else, but I cant be spending $18-20K on a bike.
And the only GS's I could find in my price range <14K are pretty much 2006 or older with some miles on them. Which to me was no big deal since the other GS had 250K+

Then I walked into the local Yamaha dealer, looked at the ST. The only Adventure bike they had. Was comfortable and very nice looking.
I ended up talking to the sales manager and told him I was more of a GS person. He said go online and take another look at the ST. He had a friend that had a GS and was doing the mandatory Alaska trip. His dad was meeting him in Colorado from Tenn on a Vstrom 650. Well, during the trip, he had to stop at about every BMW dealer for some issue and his dad only had to change tires.
When he got back, he sold his GS and bought a ST.

So, I went home, did research. Didnt really find any complaints at all about the ST. (of course it is newer) But the thing that really got me was that on Craigslist, I found I think 1 ST for sale within 1000 miles. That either means nobody has them, or nobody is selling them. I assumed the latter.

Well, a blue 2012 popped up with 0 miles on it from a dealer for $11999. Much cheaper than a used GS.

Called them up, said I will take it.
Drove down to the dealer, test rode it for about 2 miles. Paid and went home and never looked back.

Smooth. nimble and fun.

My only complaints is that it feels like it needs 1 more top end gear and that the radiator really heats up the left leg on hot days. Besides that, it's a winner!

Thats my story and Im sticking to it.
