My vstrom has been sold and it's go time. I've narrowed my choices down to a used 2012 Tenere or a used 1200GS.

I commute every day, most weekends I go for day trips on the bike and my vacations are motorcycle trips. So I rack up about 20k miles per year. Also a large portion of this riding will be two up.

So I'm hoping current Tenere owners can chime in as to why they chose the Tenere over the GS and why they think it makes sense for me.

Dom
Having racked up 55xxx km on my vstrom, I needed reliablity, a good price, shaft drive and abs. tc was a bonus.
::026:: to the bmw badge, and whizbang stuff on it, but the old bmw tc was crap (abrupt), and the reliablity is suspect to say the least.
27xxx km on the tenere, and I could not be happier. You will not be disapointed

Les'see :

I've owned the following BMW's :

1999 used RT
2000 new RT
2001 used "S"
1999 used F650
2003 new KRS
2007 used K - R bikini fairing
2005 used GSA

granted - never was stranded by any of them...but I also didn't give them the chance. B^)

I owned 2 Beemers. Was stranded by the almighty GS 3 times. My LT started leaking from the pumpkin in Arizona but made the trip back to Georgia anyway.

My reasoning for picking the Yamaha over the GS...
#1 Dealer support: I like to ride to remote places. Even the most backwoods, country bumpkin towns in Georgia have Yamaha dealerships.

#2 Dealer courtesy: Seems to be a problem in Atlanta more than other places. If I lived near the BMW dealership in Greenville, SC I'd be a lot more inclined to give BMW another shot. Those guys are great.

#3 Price: I think motorcycles in general are starting to fetch ridiculous prices and I believe that the GS selling so well in the $20k range is one of the things driving the market up. IMO, the best bang for the buck was the Yamaha. Sure the Strom is cheaper, but its just not the bike for me - chain driven and hideous looking. Although, the new model made a marked improvement on the hideousness. The KTM ADV is a great bike but maintenance is a nightmare and I got my ST with all the luggage and some other factory bits for just a few dollars more than a bone stock 990. I've never been a Triumph fan and the Stelvio looks like a special ed praying mantis. However, I do love the new Aprilia Caponord, but it looks a little too street oriented for my tastes and I'd be facing the same dealer network problems, if not worse, as the BMW.

#4 Loyalty: Of the 8 Yamaha's that my wife and I have owned, none of them have ever let us down and have never spent a long down time at the dealer for service. **knock on wood**

Chris, you are dedicated, keep it up.
I have to ask about your valves. How were they so far? The inital was at 24 miles correct? and then every 24 miles.
did you get them checked every time, in spec out of spec?

thanks in advance,
Greg

I never even considered a BMW due to reliability issues, and maintenance. I did give KTM A990 a shot, great bike but still high maintenance, and problematic. I simple became tired of working on the A990. I wanted and Adventure bike that was reliable, low maintenance, and fairly easy to work on. I don't want to worry about tubed tires, chain maintenance, frequent valve adjustments, shoddy fuel pumps, and questionably reliable water pumps. I travel a lot for work and precious little time to wrench and I do almost all my own work, I also commute as often as possible by motorcycle, and have been spoiled by the low maintenance and bullet proof reliability of my Victory Vision, so the Tenere just made sense.

Aside from the pinging issue under heavy load at low RPMs, I have been very happy with my Tenere. Its much more comfortable than A990 stock, has better road manors, and is nearly as quick. I can zing through Seattle rush hour traffic just as easily as I could on the KTM.

I do wish Yamaha would offer a cruse control kit. I have the Acel Throttle lock but its just not the same as electronic cruise control.

I've had a KTM 950ADV before and a friend who works at a bike dealership is currently dangling a 990 Baja in my face at a really good price.

To me, the KTM is like the psycho girl you brought home from the club. She can rock your world but you KNOW theres gonna be a lot of baggage with it.

The BMW is the girl with a rich dad who you will never live up to her expectations so why even try?

The Vstrom is the ugly girl in high school that still has a crush on you and tries to corner you into a relationship.

The Triumph is the British girl with a nice body but bad teeth.

The Tenere is the attractive girl who is a decent cook and the only one in the bunch worth marrying.

I've got the Tenere as more tomboy, svelte and sexy in a civilized setting, loves to get dirty.
