Seems like people are liking the mapping in the new 2014 model with better grunt and smoother running..
Wonder if Yamaha will update older bikes to the newer settings?

Never seen that happen. They'd prefer you update your ride to a 2014. That's what they're in business for.

For the 2012-13 Tenere's... AC will flash your ECU for $125... I don't think Yamaha would want to compete with that.

As for the smoothness, if the 2014 is smoother (felt that way to me), I am 'guessing' Yamaha cleaned up the manufacturing specs for the clutch basket, buckets, and retainers (my language).

Nope, not going to happen. Unless there's a recall (think FJR altitude sickness) in Yamaha's eyes the bike runs fine.

I bet a flashed 2010/3 will still out-grunt the 2014 as it is still going to be crippled by emission regs and run piss-weak, the clutch basket changes Yamaha made could possibly be a retro-fit, no reason for them to change more than they had too - unless they made a conscious decision to ensure you could not swap the parts over, but my guess is this will be a costly job.

Having never ridden a ST with a flashed ECU I can only compare my '14 Tenere to my last ST which was a stock '13 model. The differences are slight in that the bike is no faster or more powerful, just slightly smoother, a little quieter, and it has little bit more throttle response in sport mode. The clutch and transmission is smoother and quieter and the engine revs quicker in the first three gears.
Yamaha went with a few refinements, that's it.

Thanks kgfire. That is what I was looking for. Do you find any difference in Compression Braking in S or T modes?

Other changes to the '14 are contributing, clutch update for smother operation, valve/cam/ring/new head....... are part of the equation.

There doesn't seem to be much difference in compression braking between the '13 and '14 models just a smoother more refined and quieter engine, clutch, and transmission operation. The throttle is more sensitive in sport mode but I adapted to it pretty quickly.
Overall I'd have to say the improvements Yamaha made to the bike are nice and well thought out and I'm sure the E version is going to be a great option, but flashed or unflashed this bike is never going to beat a KTM or a BMW in outright performance and I should know because I've owned both of those models including the new GS wc. Having said that I still prefer the Yamaha.

I've ridden the pre 14 models a few times now and really like them. Power is OK but I'd probably get the flash done. The twin vibs are just something to get used too, as they don't seem to bother me much in an hour or so test ride. Just not sure I can put up with them for hours on end. Hope to get a 2014 test ride in the next couple of weeks to see if it is worth the extra $$$ to me or not.

Had a chance to test ride a 2013 Super Tenere yesterday.
Bike had about 1700 klm on it.
Ran good. T mode and S mode are what I expected having visited this forum and seeing what you lads here had to say.I found the bike really comfy.
It was not really quick, not bad though....but deceptively fast!
I also cranked up the preload and took it down my favorite twisties.
This big girl is a stealth bomber...once set up for the curves it just rails with confidence. It would eat lots of sports bikes alive in tighter areas where high HP would not come into play.
Alas, I could not live with the work a day acceleration/vibration on this bike. Smooth at steady rpm, but anything other the very light throttle application, produced, for ME, unacceptable vibration...at just about all revs.
A shame really, because I really wanted one.
Maybe, I should try to check out the 2014, as I really liked the bike.
Oh, and it was really decent on the slab also...pretty good wind protection, had an aftermarket screen.
Very stable at speed, and ya, you gotta watch that speedo, as I found that it is really easy to motor along at "elevated" speeds.

Vibration, what vibration? My '14 is smoother than the '13 model but it's still a Yamaha twin and the engine character is basically the same. The bike handles great and as far as being " sneaky fast " that's because the speedo is wildly optimistic ( about 10% off ).

"stealth bomber", I love it.

Not many km's on that Tenere and as the km's grow so will some power. I think I heard someone reference 6,000 miles or close to 10,000 km.

The Tenere is a fun bike with serious road-ability.

I rode the same bike on a beautiful day and loved the bike.. yes the vibs were more than I'm used to on any other bike that I've owned but I didn't mind it. I was all ready to buy the bike and just wanted to think it over.. Two days later the weather turned and it was cold (4 degrees C/40 degrees F) and really windy..and they let me take it out again. On the main hiway I was freezing and buffetted around like crazy. AND maybe because of more load, fighting the headwind, the vibs were terrible. Don't know how much the wind wings would have helped, but guess I'm just used to more protection. As for the vibs..well maybe I am too sensitive..
Am still wondering if the 14 is smoother..

My last bike was a TDM 850 MKVD1 motor. I never noticed much vibration from that, nor the new ST, but that's maybe because my bike before that was a CB 500T Honda frame rebuilt as a CL450 that left your hands numb after 20 minutes. ::025::

I have all three in my garage. 1992 TDM, 2012 s10 & 2014 s10. '14 motor was tweak to perfect even compared to the '12...

I put the 14 throttle and engine brake mapping in my 12.

I wouldn't refer to it as an "upgrade".

I have a 2012 ST, done the CJM, rode it to Yamaha to test 2014 model so i could experience the following on the test.
1) CJM 2012 still feels more powerful than new 2014 ecu mapping on sport mode
2) 2014 engine seems smoother in noise and vibration
3) 3500rpm clutch basket vibration solved on 2014, at least i search for it and couldnt find it
4) it seems it brakes better 2014 but mine has been abused a bit though
5) in top end power, 2014 seems to deliver just a bit more power thanks to more hp
6) 2014 ecu mapping isnt that restrictive as 2012 one as decel or gear change 1-2-3 isnt that jerky, maybe now is a bit more progressive but still restricted.
7) i just got the feeling that 2014 is now even more narrow bodied motorcycle and felt even lower cg, which give the sensation of more humble driving.

I decided im keeping my 2012, autotune flash my ecu and if im lucky somehow ill find a solution here in Chile for the clutch basket vibes.

Now having e suspension and cc is deffinitively a charm but is not a dealbraker for my 2012

Thats my impressions. Anyone else?
