I ordered my XT directly from Garmin and told the person I wanted it for a motorcycle . The mounting kit I got had their mount to use with ram mount and power cable.
Do they sell the XT in different configurations other than for a motorcycle?

I was worried about the security of the GPS when using the Garmin mount, so I attached a tether to the GPS so that if it ever comes off, it doesn’t get lost. However in several thousands of miles, it has never come off or lose and has never given an issue with water or dust. As long as you clip it in well it seems to work very well, but I still use the tether. The mount also seems to be very watertight..
I was unlucky and mine fell off going down the highway. I had used it for several months and put it inside for the winter. Then put it in the cradle after winter was over and went for a ride. I never found it. Turned out my new unit wouldn't stay secured to the cradle either. Garmin was good enough to send me a check after I proved that I had bought a replacement unit. I ended up buying the Tourtech mount to make sure it doesn't happen again. At a minimum, I would have some kind of tether attached to the unit.

Not that I noticed but they do sell an automotive kit as an accessory with a suction ram mount and cigarette lighter plug

To be honest the XT mount doesn't give confidence so I always try to rip it out before riding. I haven't han any problems with it though and its had some workouts that Touratech mount looks like the way to go though.
I bought the TT Mount also. The $200 was a bit tough to swallow until you receive it and then you think it’s not that expensive when you look at all the pieces it took to make it. I never pull it off now.

The GPS assumes it is mounted on a motorcycle if it is powered up by the connector pins on the back (meaning it is clipped into the Garmin cradle). If you power it up using the USB port behind the rubber cover) then the GPS assumes it’s in a car and behaves differently. These are the only modes I know off that the GPS will work in except for the PC transfer mode to upload/download firmware and data, Garmin does not sell it with different configurations, just uses the power source to decide if it’s on a motorbike or in a car.

Here's a couple pictures of my 395 in a Touratech locking mount on a Madstad bracket. Touratech sells a similar locking mount for the Zumo XT. I modified the setup by moving the crossbar to the top of the windscreen adjustment slot and added the lower, smaller diameter crossbar so I could see the dash. Originally the larger crossbar went where the smaller one is, blocking my view of the dash. I lost a little upward adjustment of the windscreen, but I never run it that high anyhow.

I’ve never had any trouble with my Zumo XT mount but my previous Zumo 595 sure does seem like a better mount , I really don’t understand why Garmin thinks they should redesign the mount every time they come out with a new GPS, seems like they should design one good locking mount that would work on future GPS for many years and stick with it.

Just bought a zumo xt. All the other units i have owned ended up with worn out displays. The XT looks very different. Is it tougher? Does it need a screen protector?

Multiple complaints of raindrops mimicking finger touch causing the XT going crazy. Common factor in these complaints was a screen protector. Garmin says the screen protector causes this.

Not new to the XT. My old zumo 550 went nuts in the rain with a screen protector fitted. It in fact ruined the digitizer which lies atop the LCD screen. Ultimately I ended up replacing the digitizer via a cheap eBay replacement. I avoided fitting a screen protector this time and it’s been working great now for years.

What type of tether do you use? I understand the XT mount is pretty reliable, but to me it is not overly confidence-inspiring and I would like an additional means to secure it.

Late to the party but I'll add my pic anyway.

This is what I use, it’s a 3D printed plastic frame that slips over the GPS, and has a black tether in the top right corner which I then secure to my bike with a mini carabiner. Cost $20

Do you find the TT mount obscures the indicator lights? I had to use my own clamp rather than the supplied TT clamp.

Yes. I modified the mounting bracket as well to raise the mount a bit.
