I'm toying with the idea of buying the YES Warranty and have to do it fairly soon.

The current off from Yamaha is as follows:

Is there any way to get this cheaper somewhere?

For those of you who have the warranty, what is your experience with it?

$380 two years ago for a four year warranty at D&H. This is with out a doubt the nicest Mom & Pop dealer in the country. Give them a call.

I bought an extended warranty on a bike once, a Honda ST1300. I knew Hondas generally don't break down but since the bike was both quite complex and I used it for long distance travel (3-6,000 trips mostly) I decided to try it. Last summer two weeks before a trip to the west coast I went it to start the bike. It would run for 15 seconds and the die no matter what I did. I called Honda. They came out and towed it to the nearest dealer, 'nice. What was not so nice was the injectors, wiring harness, and control unit that the mice had chewed into and thus taken out, nearly 2 grand worth of damage, none of which was covered by Honda. Now, was that really Honda's fault? No, I bought basically something that deferred the risk of manufacturing and design deficiencies after the stock warranty period. The thing is, bikes like Honda's and Yamaha's don't tend to have much in the way of deficiencies, particularly after the enitial warranty period. Had I not bought the extended warranty I could have used those dollars to cover the repairs. Now, I have a borderline psychotic cat and a bike with a lot fewer places for vermin to set up residency (S10). If I were ever to buy something with a known history of expensive manufacturing-based problems (say a BMW or Ducati) I might pop for a warrenty extension again but unless you abuse your bike regularly, I think the odds of you breaking even on an extended warenty for your basic Yamaha or Honda are pretty low. Remember, they are not covering problems with the bike, they are covering problems related to origional design or maufacturing issues. That's a pretty low percentage and thus a fairly long bet, YMMV.

I purchased the extended warranty for my 2012 Super Tenere... the Cam Chain Tensioner failed and caused Big Time damage. The physical head and cylinders were not replaced... everything from the crank shaft up was replaced. This repair was thousands of USD.

$100 a year for four years is cheap insurance for what could happen. I will be buying a four year extended warranty for my 2015 ES. If I don't use it the remaining years will be good if I sell it.

That's a big part of the reason I buy an extended warranty when the price is reasonable. Cheap insurance and when selling a used bike it will get you 2-3 hundred more than an equal bike with no warranty.

I never bought the extended warranty for my ST1300 either. I felt Honda's 3-year unlimited miles factory warranty was sufficient. Having only 1 year on the Super Tenere made me a little more concerned and I figure if I ever sell the bike, the warranty extension would be a good resale helper.

Another fan of D&H.

My local dealer (now out of business) wanted over $900 for a four year YES warranty on my FJR. D&H was $390. At that price I could not pass it up. I have it on my S10 as well, but I bought that used. The guy I bought it from did pay over $900 to the now defunct local dealer.

When I bought my bike, the dealer was quoting $700+ for the extended warranty saying what a great price it was. I had printed out the price from D&H and showed it to them. Told them to match it, or I buy the warranty elsewhere. They mumbled something and matched the price. Even with the reliability of the bike, cheap cheap insurance. I never bought one for my Honda ST1300, but 3 year unlimited mileage is pretty good and a fair amount of time.

Bought the Honda extended warranty for my 2002 wing,at that time Honda had a sale and a $100 rebate so i had 7 year unlimited mile warranty for $300 ! I put on 279,000 miles under warranty ! At that time warranty even covered towing and motels, got towed twice because of failed alternators, got new fork seals 3-4 times, lots of free light bulbs and a bunch of other small stuff. Extended warranty was great but these days the warranty isn't as generous as it used to be.

John Ryan stayed at my place in Fairbanks while preparing for his ride from Deadhorse to Key West. At that point he had owned his FJR for about 18 months and had right at 150,000 miles on it. If ever a man needed a YES warranty....

I never seem to put more than 60,000 miles on a bike before trading it. The ST1300 was getting there and I thought I might keep it long term which is part of the reason I popped for the extension. Unfortunately, the vermin had other ideas which taught me the folly of storing a fully flaired V4 in a rural area. If you are doing serious mileage tho and can get a policy that cost effectively covers unlimited miles for many years it may well be a good idea. No matter how well designed/built/maintained your bike is, getting into the 100,000+ range is apt to require some work. The thing is, very few bikes these days get past 50,000 and if they do, they are well past typical extended coverage window. Remember, insurance is paying someone to assume your risk. They do that because they know few if any will get there bait back allowing them to pay the occasional claim and still make money. You can beat the house, it's just that the odds against it are pretty steep...

I just picked up a 48 month extension from D&H Cycle in Alabama for $389, over $300 cheaper than from Yamaha directly. They are old school though, you have to call and then send them a check by snail mail.

Alright folks, dialed today and they're selling 4 years for $389. This is practically 50% off. I'm getting it.

All you have to do is mail them a check with your details. Talk to Renee, she's a very friendly person.
