So I can only assume the supplier changes periodically....

I would be unlikely to assist Hugo in his endeavors....
Back to Mobil One.

I'm intrigued enough about this to drop by my Yamaha dealer and see if their docs say the same. There could be multiple suppliers, for all I know. The reason I cut over the Mobil was an associate was involved in some vintage racing at Daytona, found on air cooled Moto Guzzis, they ran over 100 degrees cooler using Mobil One. Lots of very demanding high performance manufacturers require it. Granted, they're cars, but Corvettes and Ferraris aren't light duty cars. I've had very good results with it.

I have used Mobile 1 MX4T for a very long time and had not considered switching to a Yamaha oil. After the Hugo revelation I might have to take some Honda oil in for the 600 mile change :D

I don't know...that may be a bigger no-no. A dark SUV with unreadable plates may whisk you away at 3AM never to be seen again!
I don't think I'd try that one.

Before this thread got rolling, I never paid much attention to the labels on the oil, I just used the Mobil 1 made for bikes. I decided to go out to the garage and see what the latest bottle had on it. They changed the name to "Racing 4T" and the spec says JASO MA. Well, good enough. That is for the 10-40 stuff, don't have any of the 20-50 goo to look at, as I don't use petroleum glue anymore now that I have nothing but LC/FI bikes. :D

Ahhhhhh! The dreaded NEPRT (Never Ending Pointless Recurring Thread) finally rises up its ugly head. So what really is the best oil? Royal Purple, Scamsoil, Mobil1? Methinks since this is a 4 stroke, relatively low rpm, h2o cooled engine, one could use just about whatever they wished, unless it was energy conserving (not recommended because of potential clutch slippage) as long as they stay within reasonable recommendations per owner's manual for frequency of oil changes. Come on now, anyone have stories of 4 stroke motors being trashed and them stranded in the middle of nowhere due to using the wrong brand of oil or even the 'wrong' visc? I'd say that's gotta be about as common as virgin birth (earthworms excepted). At least I've never heard that story.

Now if anyone is interested in the oil I use, it's Shell Rotella T, either dino or synthic, depending on my mood at the time of purchase. Why do I use this, keeping in mind I am not a petroleum engineer (although I knew a few)? One small reason can be found here: http://www.calsci.com/motorcycleinfo/Consumables.html#Oil But the main reason I use Shell Rotella is that it is available 7/24 at most Walmarts, some auto parts stores and I assume most truck stops since it is blended for diesel engines. And it doesn't cost an arm and a leg. I would also substitute ST (SuperTech) diesel motor oil with no misgivings.

Now we get to the critical stuff. Oil filters! A long treatis can be found on filters at the above website, including cross references to make/model. Again, my product of choice is and will be ST (SuperTech), available at good old Wally World for a couple of bucks. The fellow who researched and wrote this stuff about filters seems to know what he is talking about, but again, not that big a deal for me. I used a Fram on my V-Strom because that was the only thing I could find that would fit, other than OEM. I have a hunch that the SuperTech ST6607 will work on the S10, as it fits the FJR1300, but time will tell.

Now the nitty-gritty REALLY critical decision: crush washers. But we can save that for another NEPRT blog. :D

c'mon now, everybody loves a good Oil thread. :D

I didn't even know about the Jaso MA Spec until recently - so I did learn something from this thread.
I always used Rotella in the Vstrom and the good thick stuff 20w50 in the BMW. (energy conserving or not) because the BMW has a dry clutch.

With the state of things currently in Japan, it is probably the closest we'll get to an oil change for a Tenere any time soon. If what I read in the paper today about the Japanese auto industry feeds over into the motorcycle side, we'll have lots of time to have philosophically oriented discussions. Good thing i'm not in a hurry, and have other two wheeled things. (not that it matters much recently, now they're predicting more snow and ice later this week, into the weekend.)

Now, about that Greek pastime of debating how many spirits could dance on the head of a pin....any takers?

C'mon, enjoy the silliness while it lasts. Might as well laugh, crying doesn't help.

Talking filters now? I know a verrrry long thread over on the Multistrada.net thread I can link us to. :'( Actually it was a good one posted by a lubrication engineer with years of test experience in filters. If there is an interets I will find it again

I would be very keen on knowing how any of you feel about the permanent metal screen mesh oil filters. The manufacturers promote it well, but somehow I'm not sold. I like the concept but want to be assured that it was effective.

Does anyone have direct experience with them? Thanks. R

I'm sure they work, but I like to toss the crud, filter and all, out. I don't miss the filters like my WRR, the older XTs and other have where you open a cavity, remove the element, put in a new one. I would like it less to have to clean said element and put it back together. But that's me, and I'm sure others have different priorities. I'm old and lazy.

Noooooooooooo! Say it ain't so! Oil filters...Gee I wonder who makes the YamaFilters...Fram?

Well, ok, we can do the thread drift. Here's one: http://www.calsci.com/motorcycleinfo/Consumables.html#OilFilters

But crush washers. How many miles can one get before changing? I got 130,000 miles on my Isuzu pickup before I had to break down and put in a new one.

I had one of those dandy s/s mesh filters on my FJR1300. It was real pretty, but expensive bling that only filtered down to 30 microns, and was a messy PIA to clean. I'll take one of those cheap Super Tech filters from Wally World any day. I think it was a Scott filter.

Already said it: with all that is going on, this is the closest we're going to get to an S10 this year. :'(

Anyway, Denso makes the filters, written right on them. :))
