I considered the DRZ, DR650 and a couple of KTM's. The KTM's required more maintenance than I like to do (I like to ride ::008::). I was worried the little 250 wouldn't be enough but the fuel injection, mpg's and maintenance schedule swayed me over.

Over 1200 miles of back roads, some highway and some single track. If any of you were worried because of the CC's, don't. It pulls my 6', 3'' 250lbs at 65-70 without seeming the least bit stressed. Gaining speed beyond 70 requires patience but it keeps going and is still pulling at 80 in 6th gear (it will do power wheelies in first too). At 60 it will get high 60 mpg's, faster than that and it drops into the low 60's. I'm in the process of getting another set of rims so I can have the DOT knobbies on one set and some Scorpions on the other. I put the Pirelli Scorpions on to save the Knobbies for now...What a hoot on the street! -they're not horrible offroad either.

The only problem is the whole world begins to look like and offroad park. This thing is likely to get me in trouble. >:D

What an awesome bike! I couldn't be more pleased...and it looks really nice next to the super10.

Oh I almost forgot...
If you want to add horsepower to your S10, all you have to do ride the WR for a while and then go for a spin on the S10. Works every time!

Were you breaking in the bike when you got the mpg figures? I am really thinking about getting one of these but am looking for a good used one.

I abided by the manual during break in. -1/3 throttle for 600 miles with no prolonged full throttle. 1/2 throttle for 600 to 1000 miles with no prolonged full throttle. So for acceleration I would twist on it some to get up to the throttle position explained. As the miles progressed the throttle twisting was farther during acceleration...

During break in I saw some numbers above 70 in the 600 and under miles. (I was filling up at about every 100 miles)

Between 600 and 1000 miles the numbers were all high 60's and I was letting the motor spin up pretty good while accelerating. Speed was 55-60.

The last three or four tanks with speeds of 60-70 (sometimes briefly beyond-75 and with some single track second gear stuff) the MPG's dropped into the lower 60's. I have yet to get MPG's below 60.

I switched tires at about 400 miles. The Pirellis are more street friendly and you can feel quite a bit less drag than the stockers. -I'm sure they improve the MPG's.

Also, if this helps. I get from the low 40's to high 40's on the S10 but I don't spend much time on the super slab.

Good luck finding a used one for sale. I couldn't find one within 200 miles on Craigslist or Cycle trader.

Thanks for the break in numbers, and info on the bike. I know what you mean by hard trying to find a used one.. lol.'
I found an 08 with low miles, no farkles, but the price was too high. Still looking..

I sold my WR250R to get the tenere. I got 5000 for it so i can't complain.
Awesome bike, but the suspension needs lots of work.
After 9000 miles my bike was like soggy noodles.

Awesome machine, the engine is bullet proof and you can beat the snot out of it and it asks for more. I just found myself not riding it as much as the tenere so i sold it to recoup some of my costs. It was costing me 200 a year to insure that bike so keeping it wasn't really doing me any good.

With enough practice i'm going to be riding the tenere like it was a 250 anyway ::015::

It really is a great pair. Your's look great together.

I just passed 2,700 miles on the WR (it might catch the Super 10, it's just over 5k) and can't say enough good things about it...

I have managed to get MPG's below 60 a couple of times now. After an hour or so going through the woods in second gear I headed home into a strong headwind that sapped some extra fuel. Not complaining though, I could have slowed down...Nah, can't do that!

No perceptable use of oil and the oil doesn't even look dark for more than 2000 milse on it. Nor can I feel any difference in shifting. I can't feel any difference on the Super 10 either but I could always tell on the Wee when the oil was nearing the change. I guess I expected this little screamer to 'require' sooner oil changes than suggested in the manual.

I have the exact same set, color and all, but my WRR is modified more for dirt: D606s F&R, a similar bash plate and radiator guard as in the photo (Flatland), and a EE rear disk shark fin so I don't nail the disk on rocks. I also have a Yamalink, the front tubes a bit higher in the clamps, and had the seat redone, since the stock one is quite miserable, from my viewpoint. My engine and emissions are completely stock, where I ride it has plenty of power, and it has to be street legal and quiet. I put the stock gas cap aside, as I don't much care for the woody-woodpecker look, and use a NOS chrome one from a DT1: fits perfect and looks good. Plus, I can just twist it off on the trail and look at the fuel level. I usually set the trip Odometer to zero at the start of the ride, and find the "reserve" light comes on about 90-100 miles, and head out for a gas stop. I thought about a larger tank, but I don't want or need any more weight up high. Plus, all the tanks are plastic, and plastic doesn't offer the ability to leave the gas in the tank for a few weeks, a month or so if I'm not riding: it goes bad well before that in a plastic tank.

Even with the lowered gearing (13-47) and mostly dirt use, I still average 60-65 MPG. That's off road/trail mileage, not on road mileage.

The problem most have with the suspension is the lack (or seeming lack) of high speed compression damping. When the forks need servicing, i'm planning to send them off to Race Tech and have Gold Valves installed, that goes for the shock as well. I find I can handle some really rough, rocky terrain at pretty brisk pace with mine set up as I have it now. Why I haven't dented rims or need to tighten spokes is beyond me. I find the D606s the ideal tire for my use, the stock Deathwings were worthless on anything but a warm dry road. I have as much street grip with the D606s, and sometimes too much traction with them off road, although the rear will no doubt be replaced this summer, as it is getting very long in the tooth: probably 3-3.5 K hard miles on it.

I'm very pleased with my WRR. They now make kits to turn them into roadracers for Moto 3. (no kidding: look it up)

Keep the oil and filter changed: it only holds 1.35 qts, so mine gets the oil changed every 1K miles/end of riding season, and the filter every other. I use Mobil 1 Racing 4T 10-40, makes a big difference in shifting.

I had the WR250R too and it was a sexy beast just too bad it was a little short on power out on the highway. Too bad they didn't come up with a WR450R instead. But then again I may not have purchased the Super Tenere if I had a WR450R first

Why anyone would buy this bike for highway use is beyond me. Or expect it to have much power in reserve at highway speeds...boggles the mind. It's a 250. What could you guys have possibly expected?

I just turned over 3000 miles this morning and I have never had it on a road with a speed limit over 60.

While certainly not ideal for 70mph roads, one of the things I like about my WR is if I'm forced to ride on high speed sections, knobbies and all, I can. The bike doesn't seem to care, but I sure do.

In the event I get a drastically more competent STREET LEGAL off road bike, I think I'll do the Moto3 thing and make a back road bomber out of it. I bring up street legal as dirt bike with lights won't cut it in many places I go. It needs to be not only compliant noise and other things, but have some range as well, without a big tank.

All in all, it is better than it needs to be, and most likely the most bang for the buck in the 250 class.

Hmmm...I never once noticed any issues.

I never use much throttle on any vehicle until it's warmed up and I always start the bikes while I finish putting on gear. Either mine doesn't have the issue or my pre warm up habits hide it.

For those of you who didn't care for the bike enough to keep it, that's what it's about...finding what works for you. I expected this bike to be decent on back roads and good off road and I am more than pleased. Even impressed with the back road behavior. And what a hoot on tight twisty roads (ask the guy on the beemer who waived me by the other day).

A 175 2 smoke > those were the days! I was raised on 2 smokes . I think thats why I've got the clutch switch jumper mod in permanent. I got used to twisting the throttle and having power right then and there.
10% uphill 50 mph zone? I can understand a 2 fiddy 4 stroke being a concern.
