Would you spend 2500 USD on lights?

Hi there,

I was with a friend who has also a bike (I will let you guess the brand) and informed me that he installed Denali D7 D4 with control module that integrates with the factory buttons etc....for a whopping 2500 USD...has anyone felt the need to have 4 sun like lights on the top of the factory lights?
For that budget I got front and rear ohlins suspension, two aux lights at 55 USD and 45 USD for their installation and a sandwish....

Just checking if I am old now and out of sync....or just too rational about Farkling my bike....

Cheers

I wouldn't but I don't spend money on a lot of things that others do. The reward has to be worth the investment. And not much nowadays is.
Out of curiosity what would be the lot of things that others do...say suspension for example?

The significant investment I made for the bike is the suspension....and fir the right reasons....the OEM went caput after a heavy offroad trip and I also realised that even the OEM one could not be adjusted to my weight and riding style...I was like exceeding its max capacity....hoping for a better reward once installed

But, if he does a lot of night driving where there's a lot of animal traffic, it might be worth it. And that is a but a small percentage of what he paid for his Beemer.

Oh for that it is a very rare occurrence...only if we get lost somewhere....otherwise my aliexpress 55 USD aux LED lights were doing very well on night riding...they have been tested under heavy rains and offroad and they worked just fine...Screenshot_20230806_170102_AliExpress.jpg

Suspension is different. That is used EVERY time you ride. It has a 100% duty cycle. But everybody has their own likes and dislikes on suspension. I put a Progressive Suspension on my FJ way back when. I felt a little difference but not a lot, even after adjusting it. I only did it because I had been told it would make an awsome difference. The same thing when I put the Vance & Hines pipes and re-jetted it. Yes, it made a difference, but I preferred the OE powerband better.

So, now when everybody is complaining about the OE suspension on the Tenere, I just keep reading and see how they end up liking their changes. "I" don't have any issue with the OE ES suspension.

I hear you. I bought mine back in 2014 with most of its current farkles so can't speak much about the difference with the OE parts...I kept only trying tires and after the first set (michelin PR5) I tried the Mitas E07+ and never looked elsewhere...same for the height of the windshield which I did once and that's it...

Now with my 100kg without gears nor luggage, the OEM suspension was not cutting it anymore....after a rebuild of the rear I put it to the hardest and yet it is still too soft....same for the front suspension at the maximum hardness and it is still bouncing a little too much....will ohlins change this? Definitely yes....to which extent? Only experience will tell? Is the money worth it? The OEM rear shock brand new is 700 USD while the ohlins is 1000...worth spending the extra...not a whole lot but if I get 30% better experience that the OEM that the money is fully justified.

I think there might be several things to ponder with this.... The possible need for the lights, brand, and price..... I dont fault anyone for buying anything they want... Why do I care? And I dont care what he spent, could care less....................... But there are very good alternatives that produce the same if not more light for less money. I do ride around the country and a hand full of BDR's out in the super back woods. Im a BIG proponent of BRIGHT extra lights..... I will go so far as to say that all my Baja Designs lights have saved my life more than once in the middle of the night. Ive told the stories here on the forum several times. NOTHING beats being able to see out in the desert at 1 AM. In fact, when we road the AZBDR we had an issue in the mountains and I had to ride across a whole mountain ridge at 2 AM... Rough narrow roads, no guard rails, no safety, no anything... The lights were a blessing.....................

Im a die hard fan of Baja Designs and they have done me right SO many times, these guys are the best. Anyone that might like these types of lights can buy them second hand on FB market place or even E bay for less than retail. So IMOP, folks can buy very high quality lights and install them and not spend anywhere near that type of money if they chose not to or are on a budget.....

Once again, I dont give a flip what he spent on his lights, what is much more important (to me) is that he enjoys them and hopefully this person is able to use them and possible keep him out of harms way.... Might even save his life one day.... How do you put any price tag on that.......
( I have a friend that is frugal about everything. He and I sometimes chat about this type topic. I try and explain to him that the world is all "relative"..... If you see someone driving a Rolls Royce they might make 30 million a year, they dont care about a car that cost 500K. So IMOP, if someone spent 2500, I don't care, maybe that doesn't bother them at all, and what they have or don't have doesn't bother me in the very least, more power to them)

Where I choose to ride, Ive always saved up, and bought nice lights to 'brighten' my journey ! Have used them, and loved them a million times ! ! ! !

I will add that, some of these companies build special plug-N-play "lighting systems", and many folks do not have the skills to do install them other than a manual and plug-N-play system..... There is nothing wrong with this...... Except, when some folks have special German bikes that have this type of plug-N-play wiring, you then are 'forced' to buy this and plug it in..... And this has a retail price..... At this point it comes down to: do you want it ? Or do you not want it?.............. Those customers might feel they dont have another option other to pay...... In my case Im fortunate because I know how to install all of this type stuff 20 different ways and I would never buy a 'off the shelf kit' for a specific bike. I realize not everyone knows how to do this...........

I hope this rider enjoys his bike, and puts those new lights to some good use ! ! ! ! !

Well said. Of course no one should care about what others are spending on their bikes...their money, their decision, their joy...

The way I asked the question was not about why he did it, but is there a good use for such an amount of light being projected. Yes I see the point being in a BDR at night and trying to ride while having the maximum visibility and sometimes to scare off eventually some animals which might be inadvertently crossing to your direction...but do we need 3 pais of aux + D7 + D4 + the headlight to acheive this purpose? Aren't the normal aux sufficient for it? Would you mind sharing your set up to help just in case ?

MOST factory lights suck......the factory auxiliary lights typically suck as well IMOP............... If this person travels the country late at night, travels something like a BDR in their country then YES, for sure, totally worth it IMOP.................. 100%...

If this person lives in the city and only rides to the office once and awhile and never rides at night, then I would say (this person) probably doest need this much light out put...... But if he is having fun..... ROCK - ON ! :)

Yeah no night travel at all....plus they added with the package a truck kind of horn so during the day he scares pedestrians who are not crossing from the dedicated crosswalk....that kind of stuff...

I also avoid riding at night and it happened only once on offroad when we lost track and got a bit late...I felt the auxiliary lights did the job and provided sufficient light...what they didn't do (not meant to do anyway) is that if the amount of light was very high, the dust would reflect it and worsen the visibility....same during foggy weather which happened to us at a 3000m altitude...turning those mega lights rendered the visibility terrible

In that case, you add the yellow lens's.... Baja Designs offers the lights with the yellow, or for $20 US you can have the yellow to change out....... That issue then will be taken care of ! :)

Just checked their website and for the S10 they have the universal squadron pro....brand new is about 570 USD...will check if there are good deals in the aftermarket...if the price is reasonable given my limited usage the why not

I have the original “Pro” model and they work excellent. Just as an example, I recently found a new pair of squadron sport, with the yellow lens, the white plastic cover guards, and wire harness for $140 US on FB market place.
So folks can get very good light for really good prices if they look around. I’ve also seen several sets of the ‘Pro’s’ for $300 or less.

Good. Will check the FB market.

Meanwhile, this video should provide you with a very different perspective (LOL)
