Not that it's important to the main thread here, but I still own 4 KZ650s and have ridden over 250,000 miles on them and yes they were under bucket and 1977 was the release of the first year. I have 2 1977s and 2 1978s. One of the 78s I bought new 36yrs ago.
The KZ650 really deserves a larger place in motorcycle history than it received. It was a lot cheaper and more nimble than the KZ1000. I hope you have one of the SR650's. The SR was one fine MC.

I'll have to let you and Kawasaki figure it out, but they don't even list a 76 model 650 on their website. They do list one in 77.
Mine has gotten to the point that it rattles often even on hot starts.

Are you going to throw a 14 in it?

Not going to do it myself but just curious. It sounds as if the ctt itself can be replaced without getting into the top end. In other words, is there a procedure to replace the ctt independent of a valve check/ adjustment? The reason I'm asking is that a valve adjustment was recently done but I now would like to have the updated ctt. I don't see it described in the online manual I have access to. If so, what is the procedure. (brief detail.)
Thanks, Motodoc42

Ok I will add some more fuel for the debate. My dealer called Yamaha at my request to advise us on my 2012 which is not rattling but occasionally and even then for 1-2 seconds at most. Yamaha said they have only recorded 4 failed CCTs that resulted in damage. This is a stateside number given. Said they had only 6 orders to date for the new 14 tensioner stateside. That's from Yamaha USA. Probably some BS mixed in. The most interesting thing I took from it was he said if it rattles 7-8 seconds or longer on start up they recommend changing the CCT out. Well that excludes mine as it doesn't rattle everytime and when it does its no longer than 1-2 seconds.

I am not claiming there is not a issue with the old CCT just simply passing along my communication with Yamaha through my trusted dealer . It was known up front I was willing to pay for the upgrade so if in fact its a huge enough problem I'm sure they would have been happy to take my money. Instead they steered me in the direction if it ain't broke don't go fixing it. I will of course be monitoring the cold starts along the way for any excessive rattle. Until them I'm ::021::

Yes. Going to try to get one under warranty. Still on road till Oct so hope it holds together till I get home. Would do it on the road, but don't really don't want to pull clutch cover in parking lot somewhere. Will have new CCT waiting along with new clutch basket that shipped yesterday :)

Same here. I'm some 2500mls away from the first valve adjustment. Should i wait for it, or should I change the tensioner before?

Jeez, I wish I could say that. Mine has never not rattled. Mine is throwing in a series of loud ticks every once in a while now, beyond the 'normal' start-up rattle. I'd better get mine done soon... so normal is supposed to be quiet, damn.

That was my bike too. It always rattled on start up, from day one. So even though it slowly got worse, it would be hard to really pinpoint when it might have been prudent to have it looked at.

Parts fish sells the tensioner for 121.00. My 2013 has rattle on start up and some times while riding at low rpm. I am calling the dealer monday. My dad is the warranty administrator there. Today was very hot and she kept ticking. Only 3500 miles. Still my favorite bike. And I own 11 bikes! ;)

How the hell does one distinguish the difference between Cam chain rattle and the sewing machine bucket of bolts sound this motor gives off naturally

You can hear it slap.. some do it for 5 sec... some do it for 20+ sec.... You can hear it go away..... compare it to a 14 side by side... :)

My New Tensioner in on its way to me now. Cant wait to put on. When the bike is hot she clatters pretty good. Got it all under warranty ::014::. I have to send the old one back for warranty. We do not have a Yamaha Dealer here in southern Oregon so they are good enough to send me a new one ::022::

Has anyone yet posted a 'how to' step by stem on removal and new instal? If so, I need to go read that and brush up before I install mine.

I asked about this over on the ADV site. Doesn't sound too bad. Take a look at post #24546 and past here:

avc8130(Tony) has done his and is a good source of info.
