I am at that critical moment where it's buy it or never have the opportunity again. But I am leaning towards not buying it. It's a Yamaha after all, and Extended Warranties are super profitable for companies, so the consumer must lose. I am also declining it for anything else I buy, which means I am kind of self-insured by saving a little every time I decline such coverage. I am also all maintenance myself, so I am a little concerned that coverage could be denied because I didn't take it to the dealer for every service.

Purchased the 4yr Plan from Bloodline's uncle. Used it for the headlight harness prior to the recall, a faulty starter solenoid and a leaky rear end. At this time, parts + labor will total close to the cost of the warranty and even if I didn't use it again, I feel it would have been worth the price for the piece of mind.

At this point in time, you have the advantage of many thousands of miles ridden before you from other Super Tenere owners in the US. I bought a first gen bike in the first wave of imports to the US, picking it up in August of '11. I bought the 4 year YES when I bought the bike, working it into the deal at no cost to me over the price of the bike. That YES warranty paid for a whole new top end, pistons, valve work, etc when my cam chain tensioner failed and I suffered piston/valve interference. The cost of the repairs far exceeded the ~$400 that the YES costs. NOW, the CCT is a known issue. Because of the high mile guys before you, you have an edge in staying ahead of the curve, so the decision can be made with more knowledge.

If you have a Gen II bike, I'd suggest you buy the YES. It's cheap insurance for the cost of the bike. And some significant changes have occurred, the longevity of which is still unknown. Like the polymer clutch basket pieces. That part along, (the clutch basket), costs more than the price of the YES, never mind labor, other parts required to replace it, etc.

If you have a Gen I bike, the issues are already known and it's pretty safe to skip the YES, but the onus is on you to stay ahead of the curve.

Just my $0.02

My 12 came used with the YES. It has paid for itself many times over in the three years I have had the bike.
I bought mine used as well with four year transferable YES warranty.
Have not used it yet, I am not going to take it in for the idle issue as it's intermittent and they would be chasing a Ghost.
My local Yamaha service manager is a Dick in a work, talked to him about this issue and if he has seen anything similar with other Yamaha's..
He just says "we haven't had a Tenere in for any service wouldn't know where to begin" and had no interest in beginning to think of helping me out when I told him it was still under warranty.
Never the less I have YES!

I paid eight hundred for it. It was rolled in with the cost of the bike. So Non-ES '14 + Hand warmers + YES Coverage (5 years total including first year) for 13,400 OTD before taxes (Bought out of state). I twas a ripoff. I could've had the bike for 12,500 at a different dealer that had better service, but I wanted a Blue Non-ES. (and paid for it...)

here is the thing: you are essentially playing someone else to assume your risk of manufacturing problems occurring outside the base warranty period. They do that because they know most people will never make a claim and thus they can still pay for the occasional problem and still make a decent margin. Will you be the one that benefits from that? 'Odds are no but it may be worth the piece of mind. If you do high mileage and/or push your bike to the limits a lot you likely stand a better chance of getting your money back but in general I don't think this is a model that tends to be a drama queen. YMMV.

I got the 4 year plan for less than $8 a month and to me it's cheap insurance.

The extended warranty usually helps with the resale value, but since a used S10 doesn't have any resale value, it's not going to help much with that.

I agree!

We tend to catch things in advance that would harm our treasured Tenere such as the Gen 1 CCT.
Would you sit back and wait for it to fail and munch a set of valves and total the motor so you can get a new one or total rebuild under YES?
Good question would you?
Yamaha didn't recall this Gen 1 Tenere CCT they just slipped a new model under our unsuspecting noses, now I am seeing that some service centers are replacing the Gen 1 at no cost.
The $30.00 2014 clutch basket price Typo, was that a real Typo or Yamaha slipping a solution out to the public for a short period?
Yamaha couldn't put this out as a recall it caused no harm to life or limb..
How good is the YES plan? Depends on the dealer your dealing with it seems.
My local Santa Fe dealer doesn't want to work on my bike it seems I would have to go to Albuquerque to Bobby J's over 100 miles round trip.
I go to my independent mechanic had the 24k valve adjustment done as My local Yam dealer is a Jerk.
It's a reassuring feeling that I have it but this bike is built like a bomber unless you put a ton of miles on it I don't think it will ever need major work.
Funny how the Japanese bikes have low resale value but outlast and have less issues than the Euro bikes that have higher resale value.. :-[

The motorcycle industry is a highly competitive as well as an elusive business why Yamaha does not promote anything they sell is beyond me.
This model is not something to look over as the ADV class is not as real appealing class of bike for everyone as like the cruisers, super sport or big comfy touring bikes.
I see more HD's (Cultural thing), Gold Wings (older thing) and BMW's (status thing in my neck of the woods) than anything.
The Urban crotch rocket riders come in third place.
And depending on Geographic location ATV's, Enduros and Motocross bikes.

Sorry getting off the subject, but I have to say Yamaha is making good pocket change off selling the YES plan!! ;)

I have YES... I've not had to use it on the Tenere. I once had to use it on an old Road Star.. It paid for itself in the first page of repairs.. They paid 100% of the bill (four pages worth) and I never pulled out my wallet..

I've got YES until sometime in '17 that came with be used '12. I've used it once to replace the turn signal button that came off (they don't sell the individual button so they replaced the entire unit 0.o) and that's about it. I plan on putting tons of miles on my S10 (bought with 8k miles in Jan, now has 20k+) and I'm sure the CCT will fail some time before my YES ends. THAT'S where I know YES will be worth it.

And if it ends before the CCT comes an-glued put a Manual CCT on in it's place.. You won't regret it.

I had YES on my 2012, and it was absolutely worth every bit of the ~$400 I paid for it. I bought YES again when I traded the 2012 and got the 2014. I'm a few days short of the one year mark on the 2014, and am pushing up against 36K miles. My experience with Yamaha and YES has been nothing short of amazing. If there is a problem that's covered, they have always taken care of it quickly, cheerfully, and completely. Having several great dealers within a 500 mile radius of home helps tremendously - and at least equally important, an awesome regional rep. Apart from totally loving the bike, Yamaha's fairness in the dealings I've had with them to date made buying the 2014 a foregone conclusion - and as I look at other Yamaha products, the odds of me buying their outboard, UTV, etc. are close to 100% when the time comes.

Best,

Chris

Bought it on my '04 FJR. Never used it.
Bought it on my '13 FJR. Never used it.
Bought it on my '13 S10. Never used it.........yet.

At around $400 it seemed like good peace of mind for 4 years.

I "rarely" buy extended warranties for anything. I did for my 2014ES. I figured that any trip to get something fixed would be the cost of what I paid. After that...gravey! With all the electronic stuff what can one get fixed for $390 dollars? Not much!
With luck I will never have to use this purchase.

I have Y.E.S. but I did not pay for it. After I test rode a S10 on a demo event, Yamaha offered me two-year free Y.E.S if I purchase any Yamaha motorcycle by the end of the year. So far I didn't have to use it, and I hope I will never have to.

Bought it on both my '12s. Both had CCT replaced, and something else that I've long since forgotten. I guess that's the point, I forgot about it because I didn't pay for it. I love my Teneres and I trust them to get me home...but still find YES a great comfort. Getting it on the '15 was never in doubt.
