My daughter helped me in the bike shop, even rebuilding motors when she got a little older.

She's now a mechanical engineer specializing in Robotics and has worked for Boeing and a major Robotics manufacturer, as well as interning at Toyota and Cooper Tire.

And yeah, her and her husband have so much more money while they are in their 20s than I ever have.

But overall, that's a good problem to have.

CalSci hasn't updated that page in a while. Nearly all of the non-moto filters no longer work on the Super Tenere due to the change from concave to convex at the threaded mounting plate. The threads will allow the filter to spin on, but it bottoms out on the large nut before the o-ring or gasket seals, thus causing leaks. Sometimes minor, sometimes severe!

The Mahle OC-575 is a high quality option that is known to work and costs less than the Yamaha filter. There is even a thread about it on the forum.

This is an issue with other brands too, like Pure One. I've always used Pure One, but now I've had to go back to Hi-Flow brand.

Well... I had my first way the hell out in BFE flat rear tire on Fancy yesterday. The 400mi Motoz Tractionator Adventure knobby took a hit from something that punched a 0.50-0.75 wide gash right on the face of the tire. It was the perfect hit right between two huge lugs. The damage was way too severe for a rubber worm plug. I got four take-aways from this experience....

1. Boy oh boy was I ever lucky that this never happened to me on the TAT last year!! Naivete to the point of oblivion...

2. The Slime pump (or similar) that many of us carry is worthless in the field for tubeless tires. It simply does not have enough ooomph to pop the bead back on to even begin inflating a tire to find the puncture. Once the bead is on (or with a tube), however, it does great to inflate a tire.

3. The Motoz Tractionator is essentially a run flat tire. The 3-ply Dakar sidewalls are so freaking stiff that I was able to ride back the 20ish miles to the house at VERY slow speeds without any issue

4. I REALLY REALLY miss my NoMar tire changer and all the tools/toys I have to wrestle these burly tires into submission

I am not at home but rather over in WV and I do not have my normal arsenal of tools as I work to convert the rear to a tubed tire for today and tomorrow. So I am going old school with the 5gal bucket, two tire irons, some soap, a cup of coffee, and the liberal application of elbow grease.

I am over here for three days of riding and under 20 miles into day 1, I shred the virtually new rear tire. ::010:: ::010::

Well, that sucks! Sorry to hear about the puncture. I've had good results wrapping a ratchet strap around the circumference of the tire and tightening it down to help seat the bead. I carry a short one in my pannier, just for this reason. Had to use it in Death Valley a few years back, about 13 miles from pavement and by myself with a bent front wheel.

Good luck with the repairs. I hope it goes smoothly and w/o any blood loss!

Indeed. Done that ratchet strap trick before but i dont carry one with me. You know me, Eric... lightweight and trimmed for adventure on TBDBITW.

What are these panniers you speak of?

Bummed a new 18" tube off a buddy here. Install went smoothly but once pumped up to 25-30psi - the gash really opened up and i just dont think it makes sense to go thrash Fancy out in the woods when she is not in fighting condition. Looks like my weekend riding is done...

I've had success reseting the bead using multiple Rok straps and massaging tire while Slime pump is running. Helps to be doing this as quickly as possible after you stop while tire is hot.

I have been religiously carrying a tube and tire irons for the past 1-1/2 yrs as mostly ride solo in BFE. Carry a patch kit also and patch tire from inside before installing your tube to keep puncture in tire from pinching tube. I use a lithium jump pack when running Slime pump for long periods so no worries about running down battery and no need to keep bike idling.

Also carry spare valve stems. So small, light and cheap an item that many forget about but can easily ruin your day. I dont carry tire lube as I run Ride-on sealant in my tires. When remounting a tire in the field I dip my finger in the Ride-on and use it as lube.

OK... so I let the air filter change interval drag on a bit ... or was it the 6100 TAT miles?

Kinda ashamed to admit it but I can best that photo. Surprisingly bike ran flawless w/o issue and after replacing filter, plugs and doing TBS bike ran no better. Amazing machine, very foregiving.

Ah, but she'll (fancy) live to fight & conquer another day. Nature wins one every now and then just to remind us how amazing it is we do what we do!

It's crazy what we ride over, under, through, and around.

Throw a steak on the BBQ and enjoy big guy. :)

Hmmm, 8)

Swapped the Touratech pannier mounts from the '12 to the '15, moved the license plate over to the '15, swapped forks, putting the Ohlins goodness on the '15 and the 3k mile new forks on the '12, moved the headlight guard over to the '15, cleaned around the tail and re-installed the rear rack spacer & grab handles I removed from the '12 the first day I had it home in 2011, removed the same spacer & rear grab rails from the '15, installed mirror extenders on the '15, removed the mounted heat-troller and co-ax port from the '12, swapped the AltRider heel guards from the '12 to the '15 & re-installed the oem heel guards on the '12, installed a new AltRider side stand foot on the '15, moved the SWMtech anti vibration GPS mount over to the '15, installed the MadStad windshield mount on the '12 for the new owner and pulled the mocked up supertank off the '12.

Tomorrow, rear shock swap, pull the '15 oem fuel tank and swap the pump and lid to the super tank for testing, install the SWMotech tank bag ring, remove the gas cap flap on the '15, get a couple of keys made and make a new gas cap stubby key on a knob, buy some spacers for the TT pannier mounts and finish that install and clean, clean, clean.

Well it would be more like a little here a little there over a week. 10022 Miles needed air filter and if work allows Alaska may be in the works this summer. So should go ahead and put spark plugs in. The 4 removed gap .033 -.034 the new ones gap .031-.032 . going to leave these plugs in till valve check at 25000. If at 25000 the gap is still within spec the next set will go till the next valve check/adjust 50000. Install 20mm Touratech bar risers. Removed skid plate (altrider) for oil change and to straighten it out. 20 ton press take out all the dent dings and 1 big hit. And reset clock lost 5 mins in 2 yrs.

Finished swapping everything over from the '12, installed the Rox pivot risers, did the AltRider mod on the lines, installed the matte black wrapped panels and loaded the bike for this weekend's RawHyde event in CA. Heading out in a couple of hours, camping outside Barstow tonight at a BLM campground, (hopefully).

Replaced CCT @ 23k. Took the bike to a local dealer and they agreed it was to loud. Yamaha replaced it 100% under the YES Warranty.
I still can't believe my dealer replaced the CCT and clutch basket for free when I bought my bike, after a few complaints on the bad vibe it had.

Of course, this site was how I was alerted to the issues with the first Gen's! For that alone, I'm glad I found www.yamahasupertenere.com ::015::

Look again. Ossaboy's Tenere looks rigged to stay offroad!

Perhaps he will be avoiding exactly what ya suggest?
At the very least, that Beast can head the opposite direction. It reminds me of Southwest Airlines "Wanna get away?" :)

I had a busy Good Friday off. Taking the S10 on the first shakedown camping trip tomorrow with the new bike and luggage setup. First thing was the seat leveling mod found elsewhere on the board, using the lower bumpers. It appears it took well over 1/2" off the tilt. I never had noticed it until a couple of weekends ago when I finally got to ride over 100 miles. I anticipate it will be much improved but will report again after a long day tomorrow and Sunday.

Next up was installing a Pelican box (1400 model) on the rear Altrider rack. When I took the rack off to mark the holes to drill, I noticed the 4 locations where the little reinforced ovals are on the bottom lined up well with some slots on the rack!

4-1" - 5/16" bolts, fender washers plus rubber washers and lock nuts inside:

s

Fender washers and bolt heads on the bottom. 2 extra washers that fill the space in the slot perfectly help keep it in place (I hope!)

Foam covering it all:

Tire repair kit and pump:

Tools and bag of stuff (notice the MOA anonymous book! I still paid up!):

Final product:

Packing was ridiculously easy with the large Jesse's. More of opening them up and dumping stuff in. This is how the final load out looks, since nothing except the tank bag was added. With room to spare. If all works out on this short weekend ride, I could just as easily pack for a month and the bike would look the same. Even the tank bag is half empty! :D
