I installed the protaper raptor bars today. I used the tips from the U-tube Rox riser video to help me install the bars. The install took longer than I thought, but it was a good project. i can't wait to take it on a longer ride.

Checked the valve clearances for the first time and replaced the plugs whilst I was in there. Everything was in spec except one intake valve that is at 0.007". Since it's just slightly on the loose end I decided to leave it. Made the rookie mistake of swapping the throttle servo connector with the one for the 4th coil. No start and an 060 error. Swapped them back and she fired up but it took a bit of cranking and a half-open throttle to get it to catch.

The plugs looked pretty good at 27,300 miles:

No sign of water egress or corrosion at all.

I rode it for 235 magnificent miles through NW Georgia. Riding 365 days is one thing you gotta love about the South. Last long ride was December 29: 330 miles through GA and AL.

With so many reports of valves and spark plugs being clean and in spec at 25,000 miles; I may delay mine for a while. It seems almost everybody who has checked their valves at 25,000 miles, they come back still in spec.

Thanks for the report!

I was thinking about skipping it too, but I didn't want to risk invalidating my YES warranty. Just my impression, but it seems about 50/50 whether the Super -T needs adjustment the first time or not.

Just checked mine at 19k miles. Had one exhaust valve at 0.20 mm. That is 0.02 mm out of tolerance on the tight side. Had I skipped the first check I may have had some pretty horrible consequences. The first check is a very important check.

I disagree about the 1st Valve checks. Most Exhaust Valves are tight first go around . More so if the bike has been ridden like it should be. THe only time the valves arn't on the tight side is if you really ride easy all the time.

So this is shaping up to be a long old time winter in these parts, so my 2012 with 18,972 miles has been the focus of my efforts....

Replaced the clutch basket with a 2014 version
Installed a manual CCT
Adjusted the valves (only the #1 cylinder inboard exhaust valve needed adjustment)
Synched throttle bodies
Changed coolant
Changed oil and filter
Flushed brake fluid front and rear
Flushed clutch fluid (looked like coffee, surprising for 18,972 miles)
Changed final drive oil
Cleaned air filter
Cleaned and lubed shifter linkage

The bike started up on the first crank and after a little tinkering with the throttle bodies and MCCT sounds good. Was able to engage the clutch while riding it back into the shop and that seems good as well.

Still to do? Torque the steering head bearing and tidy up the rat's nest of wiring from all the accessories. And last project will be to replace the lower left fork tube that was damaged in a deer strike last summer. The tube functions fine, but the fender mounting brackets are either bent or broken and the fender is mounted via a Rube Goldberg set-up. Looks normal from the outside, but bothers me.

Not sure how easy riding is defined, but my exhausts were in spec, and I've thrashed the bike pretty well, including 80 MPH+ runs across the desert at 115+ temperatures. The engine is not a stranger to the redline either. I do not abuse it however.

Lots of valve talk\debate on both forums recently.

While I have a thorough understanding of the internal combustion engine, it is far more a conceptual understanding than a hands-on.
Put another way, I'm not going to actually do my own Tenere valve checks, but completely comprehend the task at hand.

I skipped the first valve check. And had the blessing of my Yamaha tech to delay it. And nobody knew my bike or how I treat it better than him since he saw it often. (I had 3 year unlimited mileage service agreement and I was racking up the miles the first couple of years. Got treated like a VIP when I showed up too. Very nice part of owning this amazing machine)

Anyways, just had the first valve check performed. I think around 45,000 miles.
2 exhaust valves needed addressing. All others in spec. He stated no carbon build up and seem satisfied with my giving credit to religiously using Yamalube fuel treatment.
Can't read his mind though. Wonder if he really agrees? Lol

Bike runs fantastic. Everything is still so tight! So smooth. So fit.
Can't believe how well built the thing is.

just done my valve check at 21,000m all exhausts very tight and two inlets tight what a pain in the arse to see timing marks on camshafts.

Time to have a look at my 2012's, I do engage ABS often to clear fluid but that looks like asking for trouble.

I don't understand what you are saying here. ?? So you purposely apply your breaks to engage the ABS system to clear fluid... clear what fluid from where??
I'm confused...

The procedure in the manual, and with a paperclip jumper, is pretty easy to follow and accomplish. I'm adding it to my annual maintenance items after finding my clutch fluid questionable.

The purpose of causing the ABS pump to cycle is to cause brake fluid to flow through the ABS module (pump). If the ABS is never activated the fluid in the pump will never be replaced and can become what the technicians refer to as "Yucky". Practicing emergency braking every now and then is good for your riding skills and your ABS system.

Valves on my 13 Tenere checked out fine at a little over 30,000 miles yes this was the first valve check. I think the big thing is how good did they happen to set them the day they were set at the factory.

I cycle the ABS pump by grabbing front and/or rear brakes often when I am in gravel. You can feel the pump kick in and this moves old fluid out and new into the unit. That's what I have been doing since I read about these units going bad. I have not done the grounding procedure.
