Bar hopping.......

Ok, that is after some nice twisties, about 40 miles of dirt road including burying the bike in about 5" of sand. And a big smile and about 120 miles total.

Picked the bike up from the shop. In the last 8 years, that is only the 2nd time I've allowed anyone else to work on one of the bikes. This time it was for stuff I either didn't want to do, or stuff I didn't have the knowledge or tools to do. It was a big one.

Headlight harness replaced (recall)
Cam chain tensioner replaced (YES warranty)
valves checked - found to be in spec
swing arm lubed (I don't have the tool necessary)
steering stem lubed
brake/clutch flushed
coolant flushed/replaced
Anakee 3s installed (unexpected - the called to say the Karoo 3 rear was toast at 1900 miles)
plus a long list of other minor things.

I can say if I were a wealthy guy I could get used to this kind of thing. I'd much rather be riding than wrenching. It's a luxury that happened only because I read how much easier it would be to do a valve check if you pulled the engine. That's it, I'm out, I thought to myself. It's a rarity, but very nice.

You are a very happy rider indeed. What happened to cam tensioner?

Told service guy about it and he said he'd check to see if it could be replaced under the YES warranty. The answer was YES. That's good, because both my Teneres do the same thing. It started somewhere between 15K and 20K mile mark for both the bikes.

Mine does the same thing. It has 22K on it.

It is not a big deal to me.

It might be to Dirt Dad or he wouldn't have asked to have it changed under Warranty

Well after the Texas Hill Country ride, I rode home and straight into the Houston Ship Channel Oil spill where I worked an 80+ hour work week. I did not even unpack the motorcycle or clean it. So today I cleaned her up and as I did I discovered THIS! New K60 will about 1k miles on it. :mad: I'm sort of glad I found it at home. I have never used my AeroStich plug kit before and this was a good opportunity, before I have to do it on the side of the road in the dark while its raining.

Oh crap, well hopefully its only in the lug.



Well hell, I guess not!



Plugged with a mushroom plug, but will probably have the shop patch it when I bring it in for my valve check in a few weeks.



It was fairly difficult to get it plugged through that lug. If this happened on the road I'm not sure I would have been able to get the plug through it.

Keep an eye on it. That plug is just stuck in there, not bonded to the tire. Sometimes the steel cords will cut it and you'll experience rapid deflation. If you're going to get it patched from the inside, I would not wait for a couple of weeks if you're riding the bike during that time. You might pick up a sticky string kit that has a reamer, T handles and glue. The sticky strings vulcanize to the tire and are a permanent repair. The mushroom plug is just to get you to a dealer or tire repair shop.

Agreed. The ONLY tire repair I have ever had fail was one of those "pluggers". I've used more string plugs than I'd like to admit. Those have always served me well.

My suggestion, on a tire that new, would be to take the tire off and get a repair like this installed:

I can't say it was a big deal to me. The blue one has been doing it for about a year. It's just I was in the extraordinarily unusual position of turning in the bike for professional service. Figured I'd mention it. They actually suggested it might be covered under YES. I'm very happy to have that noise go away and will very likely do the same thing when the other Tenere goes in for a valve check.

Thanks, good information. I did not know this about the mushrooms. I will be taking it to the shop and have them repair it. I will also invest in a good plug kit and air pump. Was meaning to do this before my trip in July anyway.

They all are. Every hydraulic clutch I have ever seen is filthy within 1k miles.

Thanks for the reminder. I'm going to flush mine next time I have the bike up on the lift.
