Rode about 330km total today. Took in a car show complete with 4x4 demonstrations and bikini clad young thangs! Paired Sena headsets with a riding bud who owns a BMW and enjoyed bike-to-bike jabber on the way home. We had two Harleys, one BMW R1150R and my S10 in our group. The Harley riders needed frequent breaks and fuel stops, so there wasn't much chance of getting fatigued. ;) I was really impressed with the Sena (SMH10) in intercom mode...but this is the first time I've ever used that type of device. The other guys in the group are thinking about ordering them now, so they'll know what we're saying about them ;D
Got Sena's earlier this spring, love them! I thought I would hate listening to music in my helmet but love it! Volume control, forward, backward, pause, etc ... awesome. Being able to talk to the other one ... excellent.

Changed the oil, the final drive oil, fueled it, added the YES extended warranty, registered it at the DMV and am now going to go ride it! ::012::
Well, I took her for a 100 miles spin and got to test her in f!@#'ing monsoon conditions on the return leg ... she did great. Bike handled great even in deep water in the superslab ruts. Ordinarily I'd have maybe stopped to let the worst of it pass overhead but since it was her maiden voyage I rode right straight into it.

Also got to test the Klim Badlands Pro jacket and Latitude pants ... very impressed. Not a drop got through! I was sitting in a puddle when I got home but was dry on the inside of the suit. FYI if you are considering the jacket - my friend followed me home in the dark the other night and she said the reflective strip across the shoulder on the Badlands jacket was super visible multiple cars and car lengths back. She said even when she had cars between us she could easily spot me and when we were on empty highway could see me about 1/2 a mile away when I pulled away.

Went out with my 16 year old son and his DR 650 and tore up some of the local forest roads. First day in a few weeks that we've both had off at the same time. Priceless!

Took it to the dealership to warranty service the final drive.

6/13 - took my Tenere to a BMW dealership to have the K60's installed. Upon completion the tech noted the final drive seal looked to be leaking.
6/14 - went to the Yamaha dealership to have the steering head adjusted. Showed them the note from the BMW dealership and mentioned that I was leaving for eight weeks. Not much either of us could do. The final drive has never dripped.
6/15 - before I departed for Whitehorse I checked the final drive fluid level and it was good to go. Started experiencing extreme vertigo (scary) and returned home. Parked the Tenere on the rear patio.
6/18 - sitting on the rear porch talking to ColoRider on the phone. Glanced over and noticed final drive fluid on the rear wheel and swingarm. There was no dripping. After the talk I took pictures and emailed them to the dealership. They contacted me and said they were ordering the seals and O-rings.
7/11 - took the Tenere to the dealership for warranty final drive repair. They had the final drive apart three times with test rides between. They could not find a leak. They ran the final drive without the rear wheel installed and finally found a very very slight leak. They replaced the seal (and whatever) and installed the rear wheel. We discussed what they did and what I should expect. I geared up and rode home in at least 108* freeway heat. I will monitor the final drive for leaking and fluid loss.

Wish I had a better answer for what happened but I don't. Will post if I discover anything more.

Looks like great bonding and a proud young man.

You're smart to start him off on dirt & gravel before adding traffic in. My son was only allowed to ride with me for months before he was let loose.

Then, on his KLR650 (he's 6'3" & I'd just gotten that FJR):

Icefields Parkway last month:

I did nothing. Something about a bunch of wild fires burning and two strike teams out plus a couple other single resource units has left me at work for the last 4 days straight with no breaks.

Man, I just did 8300 miles in 20 days and now I can't get a trip to the gas station and back!!

Just got home from a trip Western NC to Avon, CO for www.rideMSTA.com's STAR 2012. 6,325 miles in 23 days with 5 days in there were I didn't ride. The Super T ran super. Oh I did have to add about 3 ounces of oil. I run Amsoil synthetic 10W40 MC oil. That is not easy to find on the road. I finally found it at a Honda/Kawasaki dealer for almost $12/qt.. Damn that is high!
A few days before when I would start the Super T the oil light would not stay on but it would come on about a mile or two down the road. I would pull off the road and turn the bike off. When I restart it the light would not come on again. So I rode on no problem.
Checking the oil is... Well complicated. Warm it up shut it off wait about 10 to 15 minutes and that is what I believe is the correct oil level. It was low so I added the 3 ounces of oil.
Great trip but what's up with the oil???

If you and/or your men are fighting these fires, be safe out there! the S10 will be waiting for you with a wagging tail, ready to go outside when you get home.

For me I drain oil with a warm motor on side stand. Change the filter and fill window to the top on the centerstand. Run the motor for about 3-4 min. Let it set for about 15 min. and fill to 3/4 window. My level has always been spot on after that until next change with no lights. Over 6000 miles on the bike now.

I also use Amsoil 10W40 MC now. Good stuff

Checks, Thanks for the kind words. Derek has been doing very well, took the BRC, and has started going out with me and my buds, which is working out well as he gets constructive criticism from someone other than DAD! He's been riding two-up with me since he was seven. In 2010 we did a 5200 mile 3 week trip, 2011 3500 in 2.5 weeks, this year we may get in a long weekend or two. Enjoyed your thread on the "other" forum and look forward to doing something similar. Missed you in Romney, maybe catch you at some other event.

- cleaned the rear wheel and final so I can see if the final drive is leaking. Also cleaned most of the remaining Tenere.

- tilted the tank back and checked the K&N air cleaner. The air cleaner was not dirty enough to service. The drain tube was over full with oil but that could have been for awhile. I cleaned it when I installed the K&N at 8,080 miles and I now have 17,140 miles. I will check it in another 1,000 miles to see if the engine is still pushing oil out the blow by tube.

- while I was there I rerouted the connector for the heated jacket. Also rerouted the overflow tube for the fuel tank.

Did all the work with the travel tools I added to the Tenere.

Neg - (1) Yamaha for their design of the airbox lid. (2) K&N for putting their logo and information on the wrong side of the air filter.
Pos - (1) Yamaha for making the fuel tank easy to raise. Two fasteners on the left panel, right side panel, two tank bolts, clear the drain tube, raise the tank and fasten it with whatever you choose.

I miss the FJR's simplicity on raising the tank, and though the air filter was that silly tube design, you didn't have to pull the tank to get to it, just some plastic panels and the seat.

::009::

What is it about air filters and bike manufacturers? They never looked under the hood of their car? 10-12 screws for the cover Vs 2-4 snap spring bands. It's supposed to be a regular service item along with the spark plugs, but both are a pita to get to. You shouldn't even need tools to access the air filter, imho.

Spent $350 and farkled up my STs tail:

-Alt-Rider-Luggage Rack (Thank you Thunderpig for preventing me from bolting the Pelican to the stock rack. This is better!)
-Pelican iM2300
-Rotopax 1.75gal jug.

Everything fits like a charm. Glad I did not go bigger on the Pelican box, because of clearance to open the Trax Pannier on the right.

This should extend my range by 80miles and gives me a place to put my tools while riding without panniers. ;D
