Man I read and read and read.............

Might be over thinking this one a bit. I am planning a trip to Canada June of 14, so that is why I am putting so much thought into this.

So I just signed up for a REI membership, hope to get a coupon or sum'in to get me a few bucks off. Maybe with the holidays they will give me a deal. I am planning on going with the Lost Ranger and a 3.5 pad, Q-core. I guess I am hung up on the price, 450 for both, fighting myself with over paying and getting what you pay for.

For real guys a huge THANK YOU for all the input and advise. Anyone want to go to Canada?

Forget down if you are going to be damp or wet climates. I use a synthetic mummy bag and wear a pair of long johns to bed. Also a therma rest keeps you off the cool ground. I am also a Search and Rescue volunteer and have had to wring the water out of my bag before crawling into it and still slept warm despite near freezing temps.

to clarify I saw the 30% off but it is only at the outlet side of REI, I did a search and they do not have the bag and pad on the outlet side.

My son and I have been into Scouting for many yrs; all-season camping, hiking and backpacking... so that tends to be my perspective for any outdoor activities and w/ camping and sleeping bags 'be prepared and layers' are the watch words for me. I live in the North East and love the winter and have camped down to -4°, but, I hate to be cold. I've ridden the mc and camped at freezing temps for days to get from NE to FL in l8 November.

Something like a Northface Allegheny 40° could be good for summer, but it can also make a great layer for other colder seasons, stuffed inside another bag like a basic 20°. An EMS Mtn Light -20° is what I use when camping in the winter and, as has been said, layering is a lifesaver - add when cold, remove when hot... even a thin, windproof layer can add tremendously. I'd much rather be too warm than too cold. >:D

Traveling at elevation can also be very tricky to plan for, temperate one minute then unseasonably cold the next. And wind chill can be a make/break factor.

Also mentioned, have a knit cap, gloves, fleece, and a base layer(long johns), and/or sleep well by just adding anything/everything that'll do the job, I've slept w/ every stitch of gear on to stay warm.

If you have a stove you could heat water - put that in a Nalgene or AL bottle, and take that into a sleeping bag. :p

Good night old scout.
Cheers, dean ::001::

Ok campers here's where we (me) be......

I got my Big Anges Lost Ranger Bag (15 deg) with the recommended sleeping pad. I have the bag liner for an extra 25 degress, not silk because I have rough skin and hate how it feels on silk. I appreciate everyone's input and I put a lot of thought into this. The money spent seems like a lot but I think it will be worth it. Like Jaxon I got it from REI and now I am a member, so I guess I know hwere I will be doing my shopping.

So do you guys leave your pad in and store it with the bag or take it out? Got my freebie pillow in there as well. Will give it a try this weekend to see how the cold weather feels. Then on to the storage and carrying aspect.

Again thanks guys!!!!! Camp on!!!!

Patrick I store my bag in the big pillow type case it came with, it's better to keep the bag uncompressed if your not traveling with it. They recommend that you unfold the air pad also so I put in on a hanger in the garage. I don't keep my air pad in the bag when traveling because I use a compression bag to carry the bag and afraid it might damage the pad. It's probably tuff enough to but the pad takes little space by itself. How's the shoulder? My new job should start in 8 weeks walls are being painted then equipment installed. Bad timing for me for the big trip this summer.

Shoulder is good, sore but good, keeps me awake at night. Gave up on the pain pills, it is manageable.

I wont be keeping bag all packed up unless it is being carried on the bike. I have it set up in my living room, with the rain I elected NOT to try it out last night, maybe this weekend. Do you but a separate compression bag? It comes with a smaller stuff sack but I have not tried to get it it there. I also blew it up with my mouth, not too bad, do you carry a compressor for it? I got tot remember how to fold up the pad in order to get it back in the bag it came with.

Summer is coming, hope the new job goes well and we can hit a few roads.

Yep went to REI and got a compression bag thats waterproof to carry it in because i keep it and my tent and tarp in a wolfman dry bag. Sometimes the tent is still wet when i break camp. I blow it up by mouth too and did so in Colorado too and didn't pass out. Expensive stuff but the best sleep i've had on the ground and i had all but quit sleeping on the ground. Good stuff costs but taken care of good stuff last. When it warms up come see me and try out your new gear down at the river.

I got a Sea To Summit compression bag. I got an XL but probably would have fit in a large. I got it at REI. I leave the pad in the sack it came in. Small pannier gets clothes and toiletries, large pannier gets tools, cook stove food coffee, sleep pad pair of shower shoes in a case and anything else I think I might need. Medium wolfman dry bag gets tent, tarp, sleeping bag, pair of shoes. Tank bag holds hat,sun glasses,
Leatherman, flashlight, munchies, maps and say hello to my little friend comes and hides in the tank bag.

Not for the wildlife as much as it's for the life that is wild.
To many crazy folks around not to have some protection.

nope the sack in the photo is the one that came with my bag, big agnes lost ranger. I was going to look into a comp sack but I got my bag and the free pillow (forgot members name, from new mexico I think) into it. I am not familiar with those style comp bags and I am not sure how much smaller it would go. Would it be worth it? Since they say NOT to leave the bag compressed will it damage the bag?

Maybe my centerville bud will chime in, this was/is my over Xmas project but my surgery made me feel icky so everything got pushed back a bit.

I have the same bag as you and the compression bag can reduce the size by at least 1/3.

Patrick I use one of those compression bags like TC is talking about. It's alright to compress a bag but when you get home put it back in the storage bag. Those compression bags will give you some more room. I'm getting excited for MarchMotoMadness! No GS trials for me though ::025:: I'm gonna stand back and watch the show. My wife still walks thur the house saying "Hold on to it Mark" :D
