The bag compresses down to about a 10" long x 8" dia unit. Guesstimation, not measured with a tape. I can fit the compressed bag into my Jesse Bags with the long side against the width of the box. I fit all of my camping gear into my right side box, including a Eureka Mountain Pass 3XTE, sleeping bags, air mattress, inflator, ground cloth, pillow and a few other items as needed.

I live in Henry County, near Paris Landing State Park.

A few of us from ADVrider might ride the MS levee system from Tiptonville up towards Paducah next weekend if the weather is decent. Let me know if you have an interest.

OK I just ordered the sea to summit bag liner, it adds 25 degrees. So we will see, this weekend I have a overnighter at our local riding area, hope to get the liner by then.

Next weekend we are suppose to hit the 7 Springs ride in Tuscumbia, Al, my buddies are watching the weateher so it may be a no-go. What are your plans? Leave out sat or Friday night? Tent camp? How much gravel? Heck yea I am interested, always looking for a new ride.

ok I got my bag liner today, looks good and says it add 25 more degrees.....we will see. Sadly our ride got canceled with all this rain. So I went and got me a hyrp-shot in the arm, no riding or camping for me this weekend. I guess I could sleep outside in my yard.

I will report up after she gets used, thanks guys.

Lots of good advice in this thread. (wear a hat, wear thermals etc)

One other great trick to get through a colder than expected night is to boil water and fill a Nalgene bottle with the hot water. Throw the bottle in a sock and toss it at the bottom of your bag 15 mins before you retire.

Wiggy's sleeping bags are the only ones I know about with a life time guarantee. They used to be (maybe still are?) a provider for US DOD.

I have backpacked in a lot pf places including Alaska and find them to be a quality product. I have used a lot of other brands and everyone has their favorite, but if you are in the market for a new one, check out their site: wiggys.com.

Used to use mummies for climbing and hiking but after a time they made me miss the room and comfort of a squared-out foot box and only use rectangular now. Down is great and packs tight and light but get it wet or damp and it's efficiency drops severely. Synthetics, (Primaloft or similar) are a good bet. They also pack quite small and light but have the advantage of re-assuming their unrolled loft by use of long, contiguous fibers that provide the airspace (actual insulator) and behave well over time. Just pick a good name brand in the temperature range you prefer and you'll be good to go with a decent ground pad/self-inflatable pad. They're also available as "dual-temp" bags that offer heavier insulation on one side than the other. Simply turn the bag over to accommodate the environment. Cabela's is a good place to window shop.

OK, ride and camping trip complete, lesson (s) learned:

the sleep pad I have is comfortable but bulky, not sure what I was thinking when I bought it. also my little pump will not inflate it, blowing sucks (TWSS!!!)

well the temps we about 45, no wind really, I did not get cold until I tossed and turned a bit and the bag slipped down or off my shoulders, I did wear a knit cap, shirt and socks. early morning I got chilly enough I decided to throw on a wool blanket I carried, thought about my jacket but in my sleepiness I elected to go wool.

This was close to home trip so I need to figure some more stuff out, buy a different pad (packs way smaller) then decide if I need to buy another bag or if I will mostly camp above 50.

Thanks guys and keep the input coming, too broke and got to much crap now to buy but winter is here....high is 45 today and low is 25. Glad I got my ride in.

Question:

looking around at all the different bags/options, how do I know how small they stuff down to? Right now I am looking a the Big Agnes bags but none say how small they stuff down to. I got one the freebie pillows from out brother here and thought I remember reading about a guy that stuffs it in his Big Agnes bag and it still gets rolled up small enough for bike camping.

If you're not shy about spending the cash, the finest down bags on the planet are made by Feathered friends in Seattle. They use an 850 down fill which equals super light weight for maximum warmth. I have a rectangular Sandpiper with a zip off hood. It's nice and roomy and packs to the size of a football. I've been comfortable down to 20 in it and zip it all the way open in the summer. The expedition model and suit have been to the top of Everest many times. Not me though, it's tough sledding on a Tenere.

Went to REI yesterday (Jaxon) and saw the Lost ranger Bag, most likely this is the one I will get. Later on I can buy a opposite zippered bag so they can be paired together for me and my wife. Or not, she may NEVER camp like I want to. I did find a used on on eBay that I am watching, might work out might not. Still wrapping my head around a $250 plus sleeping bag. Plus the pad, plus a stuff sack, how much is a hotel room? ::010::

which pad sis you get with it?
Big Agnes Insulated Air Core. I am 220+ and it works. I got the Mummy for less packing size and weight. If I were to do it over I would go for the Standard sleeping bag for better foot space. The Standard sleeping pad would give more width.

When you say standard bag, isnt the Lost Ranger a wider than Mummy bag? I am just going off the pictures, but it does NOT taper downa as much as some.

I did find one on eBay, it is about 6 years old. Dude says he has used it about 5 times, always been stored in big storage sack. Wonder how long until they break down.

REI has a 30% of one item until 12/2/2013. Should be one heck of a discount for a sleeping bag.
