I have been riding Motorcycles off and on 40+ years dirt to street and when hard up something in between (Benelli 90 and Kawasaki 50).
The other day my co worker asked me a question and started out with "so tell me, your a biker".
My quick reply was I am a motorcyclist not a biker he walked away looking confused with nothing to say.

I have always prided myself as a Motorcyclist is that how you feel?

::026:: When folks call me a "Biker" I correct them and tell them I'm a motorcyclist. "Biker" IMO has a negative connotation that is associated to the 1%ers.

::026:: Bikers ride Harleys, and have nothing in common with me other than the number of wheels under them. The overwhelming majority of Harley riders are pleasant souls, but their motorcycle experience and mine rarely overlap.

I am NOT a biker. I take offense to that remark. Well, not really offense, just disagreement. I think there are a few bikers these days, and a whole lotta wanna be bikers. I am not one of those people.

I feel no need to dress like a pirate; I feel no need to act like a bad ass; I feel no need to be accepted by people that that do.

Where I live BIKIES are the 1%ers, Bikers are the other 99% and motorcyclists are ex BMW riders sitting on the stairway to heaven in nursing homes.

But the term biker is starting to creep into the news referring to the SKWID 1%ers so I just say I ride motorbikes occasionally.

There are all kinds of riders out there so why put yourself in a box.

I always politely tell people that 'biker" has a negative connotation. I am a cyclist because I ride both motos and bicycles. I did a 3 day road tour last week with a friend who has a new Harley Heritage Softail Classic. Attractive bike. Sounds great (stock exhaust). He would disappear from my rear view mirror for long periods but he showed up at our preplanned stops within a few minutes. Given the garage space and the money I would have a Harley but I still would not be a biker.

Motorcyclist or Rider, either will suffice. I actually cringe when someone refers to me as a "Biker" - all I can picture is a helmet-less pirate barely riding his bike enough in a year to remember what all the switches do.

Having said that, one of my technicians at work rides a Harley and has a sweet looking custom chopper. He commutes daily on his Harley no matter the weather, rides his bike when we send him out of town for training, and breaks the chopper out occasionally when the weather promises to be perfect. Patrick looks like a typical Pirate...pony tail, tattoos, long goatee, etc. but he probably puts 25-30 K a year on his bike. Come to think of it, I've never seen him drive a car or truck to work in the past five years, don't even know if he owns one to be honest...

Hmmm? Definitely not a biker and probably not a motorcyclist, but maybe a motorcycle rider. For sure not a "motorcycle driver".
