Robert - You always have a good heart and positive intent. Unfortunately as we know, some things can go from good spirit to WTF in the blink of an eye.I had to go back and read the very first post. And, technically, I did mention the 2nd Amendment. And I even said I supported it. To me this is a case of the "law" v. "the spirit of the law".
Ha, thanks. Not always. This is yet another reason that your moderators are/were a better choice than I. Many times my lines between good & bad tend to blur.. . . . You always have a good heart and positive intent. . . .
The barrel is 18" long with a 1:8 twist. I was shooting IMI ammo made in Israel with 77 grain Razor Core bullets. Here's a link for the ammo. I suspect the longer barrel may help the accuracy. Those are good groups for an AR. What's your barrel twist, and bullet weight? Mine's a 20 year old 1:9, and hates 55gr.
I've been told both . . . . by knowledgeable people. To me, the tighter the twist (1:7) the lighter the bullet. And a 1:11 would work better with the heavier grain bullets. Mine groups at about 2"+ with 55gr FMJ. With the Hornady 75 gr TAP, it groups more like magic's. Which, according to everything that I've read . . . . is opposite to what I should expect. Go figure.. . . . Isn't the rule of thumb the longer the twist the heavier the bullet, the shorter the twist the lighter? Probably the other way around.
That's a VX-3HD 3.5-10 with the Leupold Custom Dial System. I think the general consensus on barrel twist is that the slower twists like 1:14, 1:12 and 1:9 work better with the lighter bullets. The 1:8, 1:7 work better with the heavier ones. The original M16A1 had a 1:12 twist to stabilize the 55 grain bullet. I guess you just have to try different loads until you find one that works in your rifle. What power Leupold is that on there? Isn't the rule of thumb the longer the twist the heavier the bullet, the shorter the twist the lighter? Probably the other way around.
Pressure differences in the two cartridges. 223's lower pressure won't cycle the 556 action right, especially with the shorter barrel, performs only fair in longer barrels. The higher pressure 556 fired in a 223 could blow out primers and beat up the action. The lower's designation shouldn't matter at all.I've been told both . . . . by knowledgeable people. Mine is a Colt HBAR with a chrome lined 16" barrel and a Chip McCormick 5lb trigger. I'm also a big fan of the Vortex Strike Eagle. A 1-6 power on the AR, and a 1-8 power on the M1a since it's a .308.
And to muddy the water even more, the AR lower is stamped to use .223. The barrel is stamped for 5.56mm. I've always been told that 5.56 can shoot .223, but .223 can't shoot 5.56.
I enjoy shooting just like some people like to play golf or tennis.[CONTENT DELETED - READ THE TITLE OF THE THREAD - CW]

My WindHam Weapon is stamped for 223, but WindHam documents it's fine to use 5.56 on all their 223 rifles.I've been told both . . . . by knowledgeable people.
