Gun and ammo sales go up after every mass shooting. People are afraid of new laws that may limit their ability to buy guns and many people are hoarding ammo. My son worked at a sporting goods store a few years ago and told me about a guy who came in and bought a whole pallet of .223. They had to load it into his truck with a forklift.

To me, if I need that much ammo, I'd learn how to reload. The equipment is the biggest investment. I have friends that reload their own; they say it's easy.

Utah has legislation working its way through to eliminate the need for a concealed permit.
Sorry but I'm totally against that.

Just last week DM and I received our freshly renewed Utah CCW licenses. I don't trust my home state at all, so relying on UT to keep me legally carrying long term.

If UT doesn't issue permits anymore we could be in trouble.

I know, but UT is a widely accepted license. So is Virginia. But looking around at what is happening in Virginia and the country i suspect my VA may license may not be as useful in the future.

I hope to be wrong about that suspicion.

No need to be concerned, all states that have gone Constitutional carry continue to issue permits to address this very issue of reciprocity with other states. I have NY & KY resident permits (KY is Constitutional carry) as well as FL, PA, and UT non-resident. These get me reciprocity with 41 other states.

You could be right with your thoughts, but it is odd stuff to hoard. Food, medication etc I can understand but bullets? Maybe it’s just something I can’t get my head around.
I just had a quick look and all is available over here, all brands. Maybe it is that it’s much heavier regulated over here, and we use only a small amount of what is available worldwide. Who knows.
Thanks

I’ve got a question for the US members. I’m a fan of mr. Miculek and Scott (Kentucky ballistics). I noticed in their videos and links to the sponsors that there is an ammo shortage. How is that possible? There are so many ammo producers worldwide. Even here in the Netherlands ammo is available.

Stefan
The ammunition manufacturers put out videos on this a short time ago. There are around 7 million new gun owners since the pandemic began (March 2020). If they each want 2 boxes of ammunition that is an additional 14 million box increase in demand to the system. They simply can't crank the stuff out fast enough to keep up with demand. Video below.

Well that explains a lot, the answer to my question. Thanks!

Been a long time since I bought .22, but that seems way too high. But, nowadays, probably as good as it's gonna get.

I was in a Bass Pro shop last week, for the first time in 5 or 6 months. The gun cases were bare, about the only ones they had in stock were the stupid expensive "commemorative" ones. Surprised me.

. . . . Being retired LEO, my CCW is valid in any state.
Take a look at this article. Apparently, there's been some changes to the LEOSA rules, or at least some rules that I didn't know about. We're not covered everywhere.

I'm Bad, I'm Nationwide.
Because of the riots, we added 18 million new gun owners is one of the factors. Mines were shut down for some of last year for social distancing, had an impact on raw material supply.

Federal Ammo CEO just gave an interview, they are over 1 Billion dollars of orders backordered. To put that in perspective their revenue for 2018 was 350 million. So they are at best 3 years of production backlogged.....

The shortage is not going away any time soon. I expect it will be at least a year till the demand decreases. Prices are never going back to "normal" 25c for steel case 223 or x39. I think they might stabilize in the 40c range. But not this year.

Im fiends with someone at Wolf ammo. Their plants in Eastern Europe would be running 24-7 but they cant get enough supply to run their lines. Its just now turning around but transit time is 3 months plus. Also if you don't know there is a massive container shortage in the world right now. So that may add further to the hold up in shipping cheap steel case stuff from "Russia".

We have Academy Sporting Goods around here. They don't have there "normal" amount of pistols, but they hold back one box of ammo for each pistol they sell. I surprised that the weapon prices haven't skyrocketed with the ammo prices.

Thanks for that article. I was aware of most of it, but I have not checked out all of the states. I do the yearly requalification with my ex-employer. One of our range staff is going to be in Texas in a couple of months, and bunch of us ex types that live near go and do a day qualification to be reissued the permit. We use one of the local Sheriff Department ranges (great, helpful group, and they do get "compensated" for the help).
