Any news from them on the basket yet. They have been at it for months and only now taken a used one from autoteach for R&D. They had a ready made pressure plate coil spring conversion because the spring is the same as the FJR which they have made for some time.#

Check the cushion spring and its seat if feel is missing from the clutch. Its the first bit against the boss of the clutch hub. Nothing to do with the pressure springs. If the cushion spring weakens or wears quicker than the number two friction plate, the clutch will lose much of its feel. Becomes an on and off switch rather than a controllable clutch.
I am referring to the feel at the lever throughout the range of motion. I prefer the coil spring feel. I feel it has a more linear rate. I may know nothing on this topic and could be talking out my hinder.

All I know is the "tuners" are at it. They always are. They can't stop. :)

And thus, my 2 ½ year old Tenere just keeps getting better and better.
I predict my clutch will be a better clutch some day in the future. (Thanks, in advance)
Yep. No gear indicator or cruise control can make the next model better than the tuned version. That's why I end up keeping my bikes, I guess.

So how much is the rig going to cost in the end?
Is this a question for me who's been rebuilding them for a while with a product for now - or those who might have something in the end?
By invitation from and with the help of members here I fathomed out what was wrong and developed a solution. Decided I could include this modification at a cost effective rate along with my hobby which has been modifying the Suzuki's for over four years. Now I'm not likely to give that pricing information away here in the general forum, other than saying it should always work out at less than the cost of a new one and better value because they are a fix. Others keep indicating that the big boys and those with solely commercial interests are constantly looking in. Done a third of their work for them in confirming there is a fix for a problem. Another third in proving there is a market for the fix. Can't avoid that but I'm not going to give them the rest.

instructions to remove, pack and refit the s10 basket here http://www.vibefreev.com/downloads.htm - please note for the moment the rest of the site caters entirely for the Suzuki's.

Yet more low and high distance baskets sent by owners to see just what's going wrong. New, low or higher mileage I find it's the same as all the others.

Delivery Mileage Super Tenere Clutch Basket

All clean and securely assembled after the modification. Please note all work is performed so that they can be opened for servicing later in life if required. Even returned to stock with all parts present but I doubt it would be a requirement once the difference in performance is understood.

Please note these baskets are not polished up to impress for the pictures. Its exactly what they should look like after degreasing, inspection, re-engineering and assembly before packing. Please note also the bolts used to replace the rivets are staked.

Yamaha designed and made them out of high quality parts to close tolerances. They just assembled them wrong with a few flaws in their thinking. Shame to throw them away. For the Members, By the Members.

One tank of fuel into the sharealike clutch basket modification. His solution has gotten to the source of the 3000 rpm shudder and solved it. As before with my previous vstrom clutch modification it was a pleasure to deal with such a professional guy.

Hi Doug - How about above 4k rpm? Did you have a problem in that range, and if so, did the basket mod make a difference there?

Above about 4200 my mirrors get very fuzzy. The vibes are a nuisance, but I'm only at 1500 miles. Keeping my fingers crossed that things will mellow out by 5k miles as others have experienced. If not, I'll be in the market for a fix.

The clutch chudder occurred between 3000-3300 so seems to be very localized in that range. It was always electric motor smooth at highway speed 3800-4000 for me. I hadn't noticed many vibes above 4000 rpm mostly because I didn't spend much time in that range.

Thanks, Doug. Interesting how different we all are when it comes to what bugs us. A temporary shudder as I pass through a low RPM point like 3300 would not bother me much at all. I like the responsiveness of the bike in the 4000+ range, and that's where I would spend a lot of time on a long road trip, which I haven't done yet on the ST. Continuous vibes in that range are what I worry about. In the early '80s I rode my trusty GS750T about 1300 miles in 24 hours (heading home for a visit when I was in the Navy). The day after I got home I tried to play golf and literally could not feel the club in my hands after 24 almost continuous hours on that bike. Took several days to fully recover. If it comes to that I'll sell the bike, but I'm optimistic it won't.

The twin is smooth at 4000 rpms. I have the 3000 RPM thing and just always chalked it up as a characteristic of a twin, as up til now I'd never ridden a twin.
Clutch mods may help the 3000rpm thing, but may move the problem somewhere else that is even worse. I've read just basic information on dual mass clutches and info I've gathered as they are designed to more or less smooth out vibration in the most frequently used RPM range at the possible side effect of slightly more vibes elsewhere. I'm happy with my little vibes at 3000rpm under load, and don't see need to risk fooling with the clutch.
Some fooled with the dampers in the Suzuki's clutches - That was not me. Some were welding and grinding the springs seats, trying different springs and putting shims in the standard springs. In many cases it was reported they moved the problems to somewhere else in the range or introduced new problems. Some parts even broke because they were then overloaded. The departure from the designers original thinking was too much. Stress again that was not me.

Every S10 clutch basket I had open to date has the problem where the seating of the springs in those free sliding segments is repeatedly vibrating the basket. That's brand new zero miles up to 25,000 miles plus. It's a fault in the way they are made. Taking the whole thing seriously out of shape once I apply more than two thirds engine load while making a static test on the bench. Took me four prototypes to fix even though I could see it with my own eyes. Simply did not want to believe how wrong they got it.

The designers spring rates and phasing are not altered at all in any of my modifications. Just restored to the place where they intended. They clearly went to a load of trouble to get them right but flaws in someone else's thinking while taking this torsion damper from concept to production let them down. Putting things back where the designers intended is only going to improve refinement across the whole range.

Time to give a report of my findings after having the Sharealike clutch modification done.
The most noticeable before and after was the reduction of vibration right in the 3000 rpm range. Feathering the clutch slightly now, while in 5th or 6th gear results in very little difference in the vibration/sound in that range. Is it completely gone, no but but my best guess would be about an 80% reduction from what it was.
I consider the Tenere to be very smooth for a large twin and am very pleased with it after 50,000 km and this has just made it a bit better.
Kind of like an ECU reflash, not necessary for many, but from what others have posted, a big improvement in that area, and next on my list. :-\

Wanted to revive this thread after having my clutch basket modified by John. (Sharealike) I admit it made me a bit nervous to ship the basket all the way to the UK, without knowing John at all. Having only learned of his work by reading about it on this site, I took a leap of faith and decided to give it a try.

My reason for wanting this mod done was specifically for the shudder right at 3200 RPM. The bike never bothered me otherwise. No annoying vibe in the bars like some have mentioned, no other vibrations that bothered me, only the one that kicked in right at 3200. It has done this since new. After getting the basket back a couple of days ago, I had the chance to test it for about 100 miles today. I can now say without a doubt that John has nailed it, and knows what is causing this vibration. The engine now passes through this RPM range with no annoying shudder, and his mod has made a great bike even better. This mod, along with the ECU flash, have been the best two things I have done to this bike.

My S10 had 40,000 miles on it when I sent a clutch basket to sharealike to be reworked. I now have 3000 miles on the reworked clutch basket. The annoying hand numbing and foot tickling vibration intensity at 3000 rpms is GONE, GONE, GONE!

There is still some vibration. I don't expect a 1200cc parallel twin (even with a 270 degree crank) to be vibration free. But what vibration remains is well within my comfort zone.

Thank you sharealike for your work in solving this problem and your professional deportment in our business dealings.

My 2012 had the chudder, as well as an awful whine in the drivetrain that drove me nuts. There didn't appear to be a fix for either, so I was more than happy to trade it in. I took a loss, and could not care less, just to get rid of that otherwise brilliant ride.
Today I test rode both the electronic suspension model, and the standard one. Both were great, perfect fueling, and no gear whine. I am happy to be back in the fold with a blue standard model. I was about to pull the trigger on a new GS, and am so happy I didn't have to. I know the Yamaha is bullet-proof, not to mention several thousand dollars less money.

I'm being asked to confirm the part numbers for owners shipping new baskets here for the modification before fitting. You can also ship used but perhaps in the closed season.

The main part required is the clutch basket. Yamaha name is Primary Driven Gear Comp. 23P-16150-00-00.

Two other parts required when owners make the swap from old to new are -
Gasket Crank Case Cover. This is the one for the clutch side - part number 23P-15461-00 about $15.
The nut holding the hub on the shaft has part number 90179-20007 about $6.

I've had these vibes pretty much from new, and just doing 4 days of twisty constant roll on the throttle mountain riding has made this enough of an annoyance to get sorted.
Just buy a 2014 clutch basket... completely new design.. Yamaha is aware of the 12-13 clutch 'vibe' issue..

Hi folks,

I have a 2012 Super Tenere and had the vibs between 3000 and 4000 rpm from the beginning. I could change the vibs characteristics just a bit by modifying fuel/air mixture ratio, but couldn't solve it completely. Then I found, thanks to this forum, the possible connection with the clutch basket. This seems logic to me and ordered a new 2014 Super Tenere 2014 clutch basket at my Yamaha dealer. I have it replaced and the vibes are completely gone. So the old clutch basket was for sure the cause off the annoying vibs which is now solved by the 2014 clutch basket.

The new 2014 clutch basket differs big time from the pre 2014 model, so Yamaha must have known about this problem (why would you change something that works just fine). It is a shame that Yamaha denies any knowledge conserning this problem, aspecially when it is so easy to fix.

Hope this post helps others.

Kind regards

Alex

When I test rode a 2012 a few months ago I really liked the bike except that every time I opened the throttle more than just a bit it felt like I was holding on to a buzz saw...a deal breaker for me.
Do the 2014 changes eliminate this?
Thanx
