Hi guys!
Does anyone else hear valve ticking on their s10 when you riding at 2000-3000r/min and also on idle? Mine is ticking a little bit but enough to disturb me if im not having earplugs. I could hear it from brand new! Im thinking of letting my Yamaha mechanic take a lock at it. ::002::

I get the same valve ticking as you describe but I have never worried about it. The bike as 4700 easy KM... I thought it maybe an issue but just keep riding ::001::

Very interesting point. When my Ex wife got her Honda Accord I thought the same thing, but visit to mechanic cleared everything away. Knocking sound was normal. With Tenere it's that same valve knock, so I never gave it a second thought. Very interesting , what people here have to say. I too have that same knock and it is very loud at times. I have 3k miles on my bike now.

Thanks you guys for responding!!! ::012::

My S10 now having 12500km on the odo. I´ve heard and read that valves might tick or knock if the gap are to big or even when its ok but maybe on the bigger side so i´m not very worried but anyway, correct me if im wrong 8). Maybe Yamahas thought behind the big gap is that their engines should not need valve adjusting before a lot of kilometers, as they usually don´t need compared to other brands. ::003::

Mine is 7 weeks old today, and makes a noticeable valve noise on start-up; I don't think it did in the first 5-8,000 miles. She's about due for an oil change; I'll try to report back if it makes a difference. I have just over 11,000 miles.

Just did my 4K service, and asked about the noise. My friend brought his Tenere in so I could take his Yamaha luggage, he has 15K on his now, and his was a little bit quieter. Now I changed over to Amzoil this time, so it might clear some of that. I have decided to get over it, Coming off of a 1004 FJR and a 06 FZ1 that had zero engine noise.... I will get used to it! Add charecter I say! ::021::

Beside I am happy with free luggage right now wooo hooo !!!!!

Thank you guys!!!
It feels a lot better to hear that someone else have the same sound in their engines, that means it´s nothing to worry abut but still it´s disturbing.

I agree It is. I shot some footage using a GO PRO mounted to my Givi Bars, and bieng those bars are right there next to sound source, the tick was insane! Even my wife asked "what is wrong with your bike?" But after reading several other posts about it , and hearing others. It is all good.

By the way!
Have someone else noticed that their right exhaust from cylinder 2 is more blue than from cyl.1. whitch would mean that cyl. 2 does get a little less fuel than cylinder. 1?
On my bike it´s just so, and on the 10000km service the mechanic adjusted the air screv a little so the right cylinder now getting exatly the same fuel but this changes does only make any diffrense on idle he said.
I tried to set the co value a little higher (+10) on cyl 2. (read abut it in another tread on this forum) but didn´t noticed any diffrense on how fast the exhaust getting red when tried to run the engine on some rpm.

If our wifes notice the ticking it means its really something ---

well we have been married for 26 years, and there has been at least one motorcycle up to 8 in the garage at the same time, plus, she rides, she had a V star 1300 (and that was a QUITE engine) when we wnt out to hear it, in driveway, she realized the GO PRO mount had amplified the noise. I told I fixed the engine, and just put the video to music.... and what do you know, ... NO ticking sound!!!!! :))

I'll just chime in as another owner with a loud valve train. The bike has been noisy since the beginning and even after oil service. I have considered having it checked but so far, I've not done so.

I've heard noisy valves are happy valves. If they go silent, then worry. Mine makes a bit of noise. A little more than my '08 FZ1 and much less than the 1200GS. I'd think that as long as mileage and power seem unchanged, it's never a thing to worry about.

This thing makes so many mechanical engine noises combined with the howling of well worn K60's that I just about have myself trained to ignore it.

Instead, I stay well tuned to anything that might feeeeel different or suspect.

With Nick torture testing an S10 for 51,000 miles, and the fact that there are reports of an S10 with 70,000+ miles and zero mechanical issues, combined with my YES coverage..........well, I just service and ride.

Be patient, it is going to be smoothing out over the next 5k+ miles.

If you think ST is loud, you should listen to speed triple. When I got new one back in 08 I thought it was a tractor ::025::
