Re: Re: Avon Trailriders?

In my experience of TKC70 the rear is great but my front like others have said is cupping or in UK stepping. Changed mine to an Annakee 2 as that is all my tyre fitter had with a semi knobbly tyre. Trying that now. To early to say much.
Shame the TKC70 front seems to cup so bad. My dealer said its normal for a fairly knobbly tyre. I asked about Avon Trailrider front but no stock and he is not keen on Avon customer service generally so generally has dropped Avon from his range. Avon sales guy agreed and hope to get him back. Otherwise I would have tried this Brit tyre. Shame though!

If you are looking for alternatives to the TKC 70, check out the original Metzler Tourance, Mitas E08, Heidneau K76 or Fullbore M40. They all get pretty good reviews and fill the same ninch as the TKC 70.

I mounted up a pair last month in anticipation for a Colorado trip were I was hoping to do some light to moderate off road riding. I was looking for a tire that would rail the curves since I was attending an FJR rally and wanted to be able to play with them in the twisties. I was also looking for a tire that would not let me down when I took the Tenere on some real off road riding.

The day I mounted them I rode to teach an MSF beginner Rider Course. I was in a little bit of a hurry and found the bike had a funny wobble when I got up to around 90 MPH. Nothing scary but not something you want to feel on a fresh set of tires. After the class I took in out on my concrete range to scuff in the tires and was quickly dragging pegs with confidence. On my way to Colorado a couple days later I felt that funny wobble again at high speeds or 90 which is only 10 over in SD. After a few hundred miles the wobble went away and I never experienced the wobble again. I rode with the FJRs the first couple days and the tires did fantastic, easily keeping up in the curves. The third day was when I grew an new admiration for the Tenere and the TKC70s. I took the Alpine loop from Silverton to Lake City and the TKC70 performed perfectly off road despite my lack of off road experience. On the way home the next day, I rode hundreds of miles of gravel scenic roads and again the tire worked flawless. When I arrived home the next day after 3100 miles the front tire showed signs of cupping. I wish I would have bumped up the front tire pressure to 40 PSI for the 2000 + miles of highway to Colorado and back. I think the front tire would have fared better.

Bottom line: Funny high speed wobble for a the first hundred or two miles, cupping beginning to show at 3100 miles, rear tire squared off slightly from crossing the prairie to and from Colorado. But I liked the tire and would buy it again remembering to increase front tire pressure for long highway trips.

Yea, I think the wobble is because the rear is so darn pointy, if that is the term. Put the 150/70-17 on the tenere wheel and the tire looks crowned majorly. When new you are riding on like 1" of rubber in the center. Once it starts wearing to normal profile for a tire it works fine. I have about 3000 miles on them now.
